Santa Anita early opinions for Sunday, Oct. 18

Santa Anita opinions for Sunday, Oct. 11 (plus Gulfstream West)

Sorry Saturday nights are the worst for me since I am on the desk at the San Diego Union-Tribune and just no time to fully handicap so this is the best I can do on Sundays. Thanks for reading.

Race 2: #7 Aloha Ke Akua (4-1)

Trainer Bill Spawr claimed this filly at Del Mar and he is 32% first off the claim. Spawr is also 33% when dropping a horse off the claim. The 3-year-old has won three times at this distance will show more speed with jockey Santiago Gonzalez.

==

Race 3: #2 Devoted One (5-2)

First off, we’ll never get this morning-line on this 2-year-old. The filly was all the rage at Del Mar before she was scratched at the gate at even money, if my memory serves me. Again she is working lights out for trainer Phil D’Amato and will be a short price in here.

==

Race 7: #3 Why Two (10-1)

=After a pair of disappointing efforts, trainer Mike Machowsky decides to put the blinkers on this 3-year-old. There is a string of bullet workouts coming into this race, maybe with blinkers added. Jockey Gary Stevens decides to take the ride.

==

Race 8: #4 Surfside Tiara (4-1)

Turned in a clunker in a Grade I so trainer Jerry Hollendorfer regroups and cuts back in distance. Jockey Rafael Bejarano decides to stay aboard.

==

Gulfstream Park West

Race 1: #2 Storm Swept (4-1)

This 4-year-old filly drops into a claimer for the first time as trainer Ralph Nicks searches for a winning spot. She is coming out of a key races and jockey Tyler Gaffalione, who is 27% with Nicks, jumps back on today.

==

Race 7: #4 Dissension (3-1)

We’re sticking with the Phil D’Amato-Tiago Pereira train today. This mare was claimed last time out and D’Amato is 23% first off the claim. He is also 26% going sprint to route. Think the barn is ready to go on another hot streak.

==

BELMONT PARK

Race 5: #2 Run to Mama (15-1)

Our Eyes:  This mare has three lifetime victories, all on the turf and two of them over this course. She returns to facing New York breds and drops in for a tag for the first time. Maybe that will wake her up.

==

GULFSTREAM PARK

Race 4: #1 Feelingbettertoday (turf only) (7-2)

Throw out that last race on the dirt as this mare wants turf only. Trainer Peter Walder is 38% second off the claim and 26% second off the layoff. This 6-year-old will be tighter today and apprentice jockey Tyler Gaffalione takes over.

==

Race 8: #3 Simplistic (6-1)

This gelding has been competitive on the main circuit and had a good second over this track in December. Trainer Tom Bazley has good numbers all the way around led by 55% with horses coming off a 31 to 60-day layoff.

==

BELMONT PARK

Race 3: #8 Ask the Lonely (5-1)

Trainer Michelle Nevin starts this 2-year-old filly by Congrats, who is 12% with first-timers. The dam has dropped five winners, including two stakes winners. Nevin is 11% with debuting MSW types and jockey Jose Ortiz is 7 for his last 23 rides.

==

Race 5: #1 Baby B (12-1)

This filly hasn’t had munch success on the turf so it’s time to go back to the dirt, where she finished third in her only try. Trainer Richard Schosberg is 30% going turf to dirt. She is also dropping to a career low in claiming ranks and hopefully hot jockey Jose Ortiz will put her on the lead with her speed.

==

GULFSTREAM PARK

Race 4: #5 Hard to Picture (3-1)

Trainer Michael Petro, who has a lot of horses for owner Frank Calabrese, is 6-for-9 with horse making their second start on the turf. The daughter of Hard Spun finished fourth in her debut at Churchill Downs. Apprentice jockey Tyler Gaffalione (38% with Petro) takes the mount.

==

Race 5: #5 R Quick Temper (5-1)

Don’t be fooled by the trainer’s name on this 2-year-old filly. Sally Mitchelhill is the listed trainer, but this horse is really trained by Kirk Ziadie, who hasn’t had his license renewed by the state. The daughter Elusive Quality has some good works over at Calder the sire is 13% with firsters.

Los Alamitos (plus a few others) opinions for Saturday, July 4

Race 1: #6 Surfside Tiara (5-2)

Interesting jockey dynamic here as Martin Garcia rides No. 1 for trainer Bob Baffert, yet he doesn’t ride Baffert’s horse in this race. Instead, he jumps on this first-timer for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer (28% with firsters). The sire Scat Daddy is 27% with firsters.

==

Race 9: #6 Lady Dash (12-1)

This filly broke her maiden over this track last year and should be plenty fit for trainer Rafael DeLeon while running in a route race last time. Hoping she is a horse for the course.

==

BELMONT PARK

Trainer Dermot Weld sends this 3-year-old over from Ireland for Juddmonte Farms. Weld brings his own jockey in PJ Smullen.

Santa Anita (plus Belmont and Gulfstream) opinions for Thursday, June 25

Race 3: #6 Gomo (4-5)

This daughter of Uncle Mo showed speed in her debut and faded a little. Owner Paul Reddam has been on fire with his 2-year-olds and trainer Doug O’Neill is 19% with 2-year-olds. Being a first-year sire, Uncle Mo doesn’t have any grass winners yet, but he enjoyed two turns and so should his daughter. Yes, I know she is 4-5, but just single her in all horizontal wagers.

==

Race 7: #10 Midnight Transfer (6-1)

Trainer Ron Ellis is 42% from a sample of 12 horses making their second start off the claim and the outside post is no bargain, but the price should be right. Joe Talamo rides.

==

Race 8: #2 Yaffe (6-1)

Trainer Craig Dollase has stronger first-time starter stats (29%) than you may see in the DRF. This daughter of City Zip out of a Dixieland Band mare is bred to win early, sprint and run on the grass. She had a good last work as jockey Tyler Baze takes the mount.

==

BELMONT PARK

Race 9: #8 Sweet Lew (turf only) (6-1)

==

GULFSTREAM PARK

==

Race 3: #7 Grand Bargain (4-1)

Trainer Jason DaCosta takes over the training of this 3-year-old colt and pulls out all the stops as he adds Lasix and gets jockey Edgard Zayas to ride. DaCosta is 20% with horses in their second career start and 39% with horses off a 46-90-day layoff.

==

This gelding ran an OK fourth in his career debut and now trainer Mike Puype drops him two levels, a move he is 4-for-5 with (80%). There are two big works since that start and jockey Tyler Baze stays aboard.
