Del Mar selections for Sunday, Aug. 14

Preview: The turf rails will be set at 12 feet, giving closers a decent shot. On the main track jockeys to think twice about are Drayden Van Dyke 0-for-16, Abel Lezcano 0-13 and Mike Smith 1-15.

Race 1: 1. Space Cadet, 2. Spindle, 3. Atlantic Slew. LONG SHOT: Topaz Time.

Race 2: 1. Midnight Rambler, 2. Trust Ur Intuition, 3. Eddie Haskell. LONG SHOT: Senator Robert.

Race 3: 1. I B Mike, 2. Coyote Fly, 3. Overcomer. LONG SHOT: Dadtaughtmewell.

Race 4: 1. #9 Feldini (6-1), 2. Dark Energy, 3. Angel Eria. LONG SHOT: Aztec Warrior.
Trainer Scott Hansen is 43% the first time he puts a horse on the grass for the first time. Jockey Drayden Van Dyke jumps back. The sire Twirling Candy gets 10% winners first time on the green.

Race 5: 1. #2 Cordiality (5-1), 2. Allsquare, 3. Filly On Fire. LONG SHOT: The Spiral Jetter.
Trainer Mark Glatt is having a huge meet and he looks to continue it with this first off the claim filly. Glatt is 31% first off the claim and jockey Flavien Prat, 27% with Glatt, takes over.

Race 6: 1. Hobbits Hero, 2. Tuco, 3. Zinvor. LONG SHOT: Reflected Star.

Race 7: 1. Fact of Life, 2. American Gal, 3. Cho Has Zip. LONG SHOT: Hopefully.

Race 8: 1. #5 Barbara Beatrice (6-1), 2. Singing Kitty, 3. How Unusual. LONG SHOT: Tiz a Kiss.
This filly has been facing open company and now drops into a Cal-bred stakes. She has won over this course before and trainer Phil D’Amato is good in all categories, especially 25% third off the layoff. She might get overlooked in the wagering.

Race 9: 1. Awesome Image, 2. Legitimate, 3. Star Express. LONG SHOT: Olimpio’s Scat Cat.

Santa Anita opinions for Sunday, March 6

Preview: With rain scheduled to begin late Saturday night, SA management finally did something smart and carded only one grass race, which will be taken off to main track in all likelihood on Sunday. Look for horses that have done well on wet tracks before and check those Tomlinson numbers.

                                

Race 3: #4 Toledo Eddie (9-2) 

Trainer Robertino Diodoro claimed this gelding last time and moves him up, which is always a good. Diodoro is 22% first off the claim and this 7-year-old is 2-for-2 on a wet track.

                   

Race 4: #5 Keeping the Faith (6-1)

Plenty of class droppers in this maiden claimer, including this gelding. Trainer Anthony Saavedra is a perfect 3-for-3 when employing the sprint-route-sprint angle. Also the sire Southern Image is 18% with horses on a wet track. Apprentice David Lopez jumps on.

 

Race 6: #3 Feldini (8-1) 

Tough maiden race with trainers like Bob Baffert, Jerry Hollendorfer and John Sadler with horses entered but going with a possible up and comer in this 3-year-old by Twirling Candy, a sire who is 31% with mud horses. Trainer Scott Hansen is 33% with horses going two turns for the first time and jockey Tyler Baze jumps on.

 

Race 8: #3 Star of Munster (5-1) 

This filly had been doing well in open company and now drops into a Cal-bred race so looks like a class drop to me. Trainer Robertino Diodoro is 27% with horses that won their last race and should it stay wet the sire Tribal Rule does well on an off-track.

Santa Anita selections for Saturday, Sept. 26

Sorry, sort of took Los Alamitos off from blogging. Made some picks on HorsePlayerNow and did OK, but nothing to write home about. Beside, at work, we are learning a new computer system and my schedule is a little wacky (working a lot of days) and we have another week of that.

But Santa Anita is back and here are a few thoughts on Saturday’s card.

FIRST RACE: 1. Aeon, 2. Redneck Crazy, 3. Sorcerer’s Wildcat. LONG SHOT: Little Mustard.

SECOND RACE: 1. Adeline Moon, 2. C.C. Zipp, 3. Sudden Fame. LONG SHOT: Mrs. Norris.

THIRD RACE: 1. #6 Elementar (12-1), 2. Curlin’s Fox, 3. Desert Steel. LONG SHOT: Singing Kitty.

This filly is returning in a tough spot, but she has won down the hill before. Now, Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens takes over for trainer Richard Mandella and they are a 33% proposition at Santa Anita. The 3-year-old is also coming out of a key race.

FOURTH RACE: 1. Venture Capitalist, 2. Kenjisstorm, 3. Lambo Luxx. LONG SHOT: Relative Time.

FIFTH RACE: 1. #6 Rare Candy (12-1), 2. Nyquist, 3. Swipe. LONG SHOT: On Fire.

After three straight runs on the grass, including a win, trainer David Hofmans has decided it’s time to find out if this son of Twirling Candy can run on the dirt. There are two big works on the dirt and the distance should be no problem. It’s a matter if he has the class.

SIXTH RACE: 1. Mal Verde, 2. Smack Talk, 3. Labour. LONG SHOT: Kill Shot.

SEVENTH RACE: 1.beholder, 2. Warren’s Veneda, 3. Wild in the Saddle. LONG SHOT: My Monet.

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Songbird, 2. Jade Princess, 3. Pretty N Cool. LONG SHOT: Vieja Luna.

NINTH RACE: 1. #8 Hard Not to Like (3-1) BEST BET, 2. Photo Call, 3. Lady Pimperna;. LONG SHOT: Sharla Rae.

Trainer Christophe Clement shipped west in May to take a Grade I with this mare and he’s trying it again, with the same jockey, Victor Espinoza. This 6-year-old has a wicked urn of foot in the stretch and while she hasn’t gone this far before that should be no problem.

10TH RACE: 1. #2 Sammy Mandeville (10-1), 2. Hoppertunity, 3. Bayern. LONG SHOT: Point Piper.

This 4-year-old has had one problem this year: Catch a Flight. Well, that Richard Mandella horse isn’t running in this race so let’s give this 4-year-old a shot with leading rider Rafael Bejarano aboard. The son of Rock Hard Ten finished second in the Longacres Mile and that race has produced three next out winners.

Santa Anita (plus a few others) opinions for June 26 (Friday)

Race 3: #8 Frac Candy (3-1)

This son of Twirling Candy is bred up and down to love two turns. Twirling Candy has already had one turf winner so that shouldn’t be an issue for the Desormeaux brothers (trainer Keith and jockey Kent).

Race 4: #3 Lil Cheyenne (5-2)

This 5-year-old mare makes her second start off a long layoff. She comes out of a key race. Trainer Mark Glatt is 36% with moving a horse down two or more class levels and he puts top rider Rafael Bejarano (27% with Glatt) aboard.

BELMONT PARK

Race 6: #3 Monster Mash (12-1)

Trainer Jeremiah Englehart is an amazing 37% when taking horses from turf to dirt. This 6-year-old is ITM 4-of-5 races he has run on a fast track and if it rains he’s a good mudder, too. Englehart is also 23% in the second race off the layoff and 24% in the allowance ranks. Jockey Rajiv Maragh takes over.

CHURCHILL DOWNS

Race 9: #12 Ettaman (8-1)

Trainer George “Rusty” Arnold drops this 4-year-old colt off a third place effort to better. Arnold is 15% in the maiden claiming ranks and this son of Distorted Humor is coming out of a key race that has produced two winners so far.

GULFSTREAM PARK

Race 4: #1 Right on Ready (4-1)

This gelding freaked last time winning his maiden claimer by nearly 8 lengths and trainer Oscar Gonzalez was right there to claim him. Gonzalez is 33% (5-for-15) first off the claim and even though this one is facing winners for the first time, he might be useful.

Race 6: #2 Gukumatz (2-1)

This gelding is a stone-cold lock or it will run up the track in its first race in its first race in 15 months. Trainer Efren Loza Jr. had this son of Point Determined ready twice for his debut and off a layoff. We’re betting lock as Loza is 35% first time in a claiming race. This one certainly has the class edge.
