Belmont Park, Gulfstream Park, Horse racing, Los Alamitos

Los Alamitos (plus a few others) opinions for Thursday, July 9

Race 3: #5 Myrna Lou (8-1)

Has a good second over the track last year and has good speed. Has a good work over the track. Trainer Molly Pearson is 29% with beaten favorites and regular jockey Scott Stevens is in from Turf Paradise to ride. He is 33% with Pearson.

==

Race 6: #8 Changing Karma (8-1)

This gelding has been competitive on the main circuit and had a good second over this track in December. Trainer Tom Bazley has good numbers all the way around led by 55% with horses coming off a 31 to 60-day layoff.

==

BELMONT PARK

Race 3: #8 Ask the Lonely (5-1)

Trainer Michelle Nevin starts this 2-year-old filly by Congrats, who is 12% with first-timers. The dam has dropped five winners, including two stakes winners. Nevin is 11% with debuting MSW types and jockey Jose Ortiz is 7 for his last 23 rides.

==

Race 5: #1 Baby B (12-1)

This filly hasn’t had munch success on the turf so it’s time to go back to the dirt, where she finished third in her only try. Trainer Richard Schosberg is 30% going turf to dirt. She is also dropping to a career low in claiming ranks and hopefully hot jockey Jose Ortiz will put her on the lead with her speed.

==

GULFSTREAM PARK

Race 4: #5 Hard to Picture (3-1)

Trainer Michael Petro, who has a lot of horses for owner Frank Calabrese, is 6-for-9 with horse making their second start on the turf. The daughter of Hard Spun finished fourth in her debut at Churchill Downs. Apprentice jockey Tyler Gaffalione (38% with Petro) takes the mount.

==

Race 5: #5 R Quick Temper (5-1)

Don’t be fooled by the trainer’s name on this 2-year-old filly. Sally Mitchelhill is the listed trainer, but this horse is really trained by Kirk Ziadie, who hasn’t had his license renewed by the state. The daughter Elusive Quality has some good works over at Calder the sire is 13% with firsters.

Updated Santa Anita picks for Sunday, March 2

Second race is obviously off the turf. Will make picks when scratches are announced.

FIRST RACE: 1. Tempe, 2. Miss American Pie, 3. Clearly Confused. LONG SHOT: She’s a Go Girl.

Trainer Dan Schnell ships this speedy 4-year-old filly TEMPE after wins at Turf Paradise and Sunland Park. On top of that, he brings his own jockey in Juan Ochoa. There is no doubt she will try to take the lead and hope to hang on.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Square Dancer, 2. Yankee Rebel, 3. Full Consent. LONG SHOT: Smart Promotion.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Time for Angie, 2. South Sound, 3. Larocco. LONG SHOT: Exotic Behavior.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. D’ Obession, 2. Shoer Hugh, 3. Judge Carr. LONG SHOT: Justa Gusta.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Honey Ride, 2. Candy Eye, 3. Kool Kat. LONG SHOT: Hugh Knew.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Joint Attempt, 2. Raven Wild, 3. Miracle Merger. LONG SHOT: Shared Sacrifice.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Charbroiled (best bet), 2. Dehere Is Gone, 3. Stealth Fighter. LONG SHOT: Nonno Tunaga.

CHARBROILED, a 4-year-old gelding, is dropped from a Cal-bred maiden special weight all the way to the bottom, $20,000 maiden claimers. He showed some speed coming down the hill on the turf course. Speed jockey Edwin Maldonado gets aboard and trainer Karen Headley is 2-for-3 with maidens making their second start.

Santa Anita picks for Friday, Jan. 17

FIRST RACE: 1. Too Obvious, 2. Time for Angie, 3. Frandontjudge. LONG SHOT: Pay the Debt.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Kylee’s Star, 2.Just Dancing, 3. Visions of Candy. LONG SHOT: Winninfashion.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. English Crossing, 2. Tebowing, 3. Highly Rated. LONG SHOT: Lilly’s Perfect.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Splendiferous Moon, 2., Acute, 3. Just After Sunset. LONG SHOT: Unketp Rendez Vous.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Flexiplus, 2. Boyett, 3. Valtari. LONG SHOT: Vibrato Jazz.

Trainer Rob Atras brings FLEXIPLUS, a 6-year-old horse, over from Arizona’s Turf Paradise and brings along his own jockey, Daniel Vergara. The only reason we can see for this move up in class is the distance of this race: 1¼ mile on the turf. This horse has run his two best races going longer than this, but maybe there will be a small upset here. The price will be right.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Day of Fury, 2. The Admiral, 3. Icy Ride. LONG SHOT: El Nino Trouble.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Kochees, 2. Ambitious Brew, 3. Sheer Talent. LONG SHOT: Rangi.=

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Dehere Is Gone (best bet), 2. The Cleaners, 3. Omar Little. LONG SHOT: Stealth Fighter.

Veteran trainer Bill Spawr doesn’t have a reputation with maidens, but he sure does have good numbers. He is 29% in first starts, 40% with debuting maiden claimers and 50% with maiden claimers overall. He puts regular barn rider Agapito Delgadillo aboard his 5-year-old first-timer DEHERE IS GONE, who has had a couple of nice works for the level.

Del Mar picks for Wednesday, July 31

FIRST RACE: 1. Afleet Cowboy, 2. Domonation, 3. Love That Action. LONG SHOT: It Doesn’t Add Up.

AFLEET COWBOY takes a drop in class for trainer Bill Spawr. He has finished in the money 4-of-5 races at this distance.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Little Bit Cactus, 2. Cravin’ the Heat, 3. Rsweet Serendipity. LONG SHOT: Jen’s Hot.

LITTLE BIT CACTUS has been in the money in 6-of-8 races at Turf Paradise, but still hasn’t broken her maiden. She goes to the barn of trainer Jeff Mullins and leading rider Rafael Bejarano jumps aboard.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Spring Up, 2. Solid South, 3. Awesome Address. LONG SHOT: Magnum Force.

SPRING UP just won over the track and was claimed by trainer John Sadler, who is very good first off the claim. This colt has speed and that works well on this track so far at the meet.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Hurry Home Clover, 2. Lite That Baby Up, 3. Jay’s Firetruck. LONG SHOT: Chico Suerte.

HURRY HOME CLOVER is first off the claim for Spawr, who is another trainer who does with this move. The gelding has speed and he’s drawn inside.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. RED GLOBE (best bet), 2. Awesome Okee, 3. Volkonsky. LONG SHOT: All Star Bell.

RED GLOBE drops in class from a straight maiden race to Cal-bred maidens. He was third in his last and has trouble getting out of the starting gate in a timely manner. Hopefully, the addition of Bejarano will change that.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Relentless Heat, 2. Morning Fog, 3. Bench Points. LONG SHOT: Ballard Ruler.

Trainer Peter Eurton hasn’t won at the meet yet, but he’s a good trainer. RELENTLESS HEAT comes out of a key race and might be ready for big race today.

==

SEVENTH RACE (Graduation): 1. Testify Under Oath, 2. Moving Desert, 3. Gangnam Guy. LONG SHOT: Better Bet.

There doesn’t appear to be any world beaters in this race so why not go with a fresh face. TESTIFY UNDER OATH is a first-time starter for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who wouldn’t run in this spot unless he thought he had a big shot.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Tap Tap Ur It, 2. Athina Lee, 3. Flaxen Maiden. LONG SHOT: Huera Bonita.

TAP TAP UR IT has been on the track since May 27 at Hollywood Park but she comes out of a race that has produced four next out winners and she only finished five lengths behind the winner.
