Del Mar selections for Saturday, Aug. 27

Preview: The turf rails will be at 12 feet today so closers should have a shot. Jockeys Flavien Prat (16-for-69) and Rafael Bejarano (10-56) lead the way on the grass. Jockeys to avoid (maybe) are Stewart Elliott 1-for-26, Mike Smith 1-for-25 and Martin Garcia 0-21.

Race 1: 1. #3 Where’s Bubba (6-1) BEST BET, 2. Boompa, 3. Tomasino. LONG SHOT: Exemplar.

Trainer Bill Spawr is good a changing a horses distance. He is 36% when going from a route to a sprint and even more impressive when going sprint-route-sprint he is 56%.

Race 2: 1. Above Board, 2. Latest Craze, 3. Counturluckystars. LONG SHOT: Cavalry.

Race 3: 1. Masochistic, 2. Indexical, 3. Vyjack.

Race 4: 1. Vartan, 2. Dream It Do It, 3. Moose Skowron. LONG SHOT: Dynamic Scoring.

Race 5: 1. #3 Lauren’s Export (12-1), 2. Dust It, 3. Leveler. LONG SHOT: Anythingcanhappen.

Trainer Carla Gaines is 23% when debuting a horse on the turf and this daughter of Lonhro has three straight big works coming into the race. Lonhro is 13% with first-time turfers.

Race 6: 1. Hell On Heels, 2. Krisie’s Heart, 3. Passionate Emotion. LONG SHOT: Dragon Flowerr.

Race 7: 1. Nodiac, 2. Do the Dance, 3. How Unusual. LONG SHOT: Patriotic Diamond.

Race 8: 1. #5 How About Zero (6-1), 2. Miss Sunset, 3. You’re Late. LONG SHOT: I’ll Be Around.

We have seen trainer Doug O’Neill do this before: start a first-time maiden in a stakes race and he has won. This is a daughter of Square Eddie, who gets 16% winners first time out and barn jockey Mario Gutierrez takes the ride.

Race 9: 1. #8 Hansen Tale Blues (10-1), 2. Life’s Blessings, 3. Lovely Linda. LONG SHOT: Soul Singer.

Trainer Victor Garcia is 12% with first-time starters and he always seems to cash a bomber for his father King Juan Garcia, who races under the name Lucky Charm Stable. This son of Hansen has been training steadily and the sire gets 14% first time out. Follow the money.

Race 10: 1. American Aristocat, 2. Temple Keys, 3. Anatolian. LONG SHOT: Over Par.

Good luck

Santa Anita early opinions for Sunday, March 8

Working the desk last night and time change have done me in for full picks today. Check me out on twitter @Jeff_Nahill to see if I like anything else earlier on the card. Thanks for reading.

==

Race 6: #8 Pay the Fine (8-1)

The son of Square Eddie showed speed and faded in his debut last month. He should only improve off that effort and the Doug O’Neill barn seems to be heating up. Jockey Elvis Trujillo takes the mount.

==

Race 9: #1 Paythebank (12-1)

Trainer Eric Kruljac sends this gelding around two turns off a run down the hill. He put a good work into the son of Lemon Drop Kid (fastest of 138) and drops into a maiden claimer for the first time.

Santa Anita selections for Sunday, March 1

Looks like they are staying on turf. Hope we don’t have a repeat of last Sunday.

==

FIST RACE: 1. Bobby Z Man, 2. Gangnam Guy, 3. Hot Market. LONG SHOT: Smokey’s Legacy.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Lucky Views, 2. Lnock Em Flat, 3. Papa Turf. LONG SHOT: City State.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Mr. Jay D. (best bet), 2. Whiskey Wild, 3. English Art. LONG SHOT: Bourne Hot.

MR. JAY D. (8-5), a 3-year-old, broke its maiden at Tampa Bay Downs and then finished second in an allowance race. Looks to be a private purchase by trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and he put a big work into this one for this race. Hollendorfer is 32% first time with a horse.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Faith Proof, 2. Promiscuoussuances, 3. Addendum. LONG SHOT: Nothing to Hide.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Socialized, 2. Frosty Friday, 3. Showcase Winner. LONG SHOT: Housemaker.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Frensham, 2. Missing Groom, 3. Head South. LONG SHOT: Field Report.

Despite being 128-1, this 4-year-old FRENSHAM (3-1) wasn’t entirely embarrassed in the Grade I Malibu, where he finished fifth to Shared Belief. That race has proven to be a key with the top two returning to win. This son of Square Eddie is back in the Cal-bred ranks and should give a good account of himself.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Gnarly Harly, 2. Bandidio Too, 3. Sky Heart. LONG SHOT: Woody’s Folly.

Santa Anita selections for Saturday, Sept. 27

FIRST RACE: 1. Original Rex, 2. Wooram, 3. Captain Carchy. LONG SHOT: Better Luck.

There doesn’t appear to be any world beaters in this maiden claiming race so why not go with ORIGINAL REX (4-1), a first-time starter? Square Eddie is good first time out as a sire, especially in Cal-bred company. Trainer Doug O’Neill is OK with firsters and puts red-hot apprentice Drayden Van Dyke aboard.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Blackford, 2. Mosso, 3. Sir Barclay. LONG SHOT: Van Fraassen.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Heat Flash, 2. Conquest Two Step, 3. Quality Plan. LONG SHOT: Unusual Taste.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Kantune, 2. Madiba, 3. Fame and Power. LONG SHOT: Punctuate.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Beholder, 2. Iotapa, 3. Tiz Midnight. LONG SHOT: Yahilwa.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Lord Nelson, 2. American Pharoah, 3. Conquest Panthera. LONG SHOT: Skyway.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Rusty Slipper, 2. Irish Mission, 3. Moulin de Mougin. LONG SHOT: Stormy Lucy.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Shared Belief, 2. Majestic Harbor, 3. Fed Biz. LONG SHOT: Mystery Train.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Stars Above Me (best bet), 2. On the Backstreets, 3. Alexis Tangier. LONG SHOT: Meinertzhageni.

Trainer Graham Motion doesn’t ship West much, especially for a minor stakes so he must like this 3-year-old filly, STARS ABOVE ME (5-2), a lot. She had all kinds of trouble in her last race at Saratoga and figures to get a better ride with jockey Elvis Trujillo aboard.

==

10th RACE: 1. Dad’s Princess, 2. Maybellene, 3. Conquest Eclipse. LONG SHOT: Sunday Sonnet.

==

Race 11: 1. Dream It Do It, 2. Nakamoto, 3. Papscoolpapacool. LONG SHOT: Borealis Breeze.

Love offspring of Colonel John when they get a chance to try two turns and that’s what we have here in this Peter Miller trainee DREAM IT DO IT (6-1). Showed speed in his last race and jockey Elvis Trujillo (26% with Miller) knows how to ride on the grass.

Los Alamitos Race Course opinions for Saturday, Sept. 6

Race 2: #8 Not Enough Eddie (4-1)

Square Eddie has proven to be quite good as a first out sire, especially in the Cal-bred likes for owner Paul Reddam. Trainer Doug O’Neill unveils this homebred and gets top jockey Rafael Bejarano to ride.

==

Race 6: #2 Delta Flower (2-1)

This daughter of A.P. Delta finished fourth to Jojo Warrior in her last effort in graded company and now drops into a minor stakes. Jockey Elvis Trujillo will be able to press the pace and at the earlier Los Al meet if you could get lead by head of the stretch you were a winner.
