Santa Anita picks for Thursday, Jan. 2

FIRST RACE: 1. Electric Eddie (best bet), 2. Oh Billy Billy, 3. Bodrum. LONG SHOTS: Pyrotechnics.

It’s about time this son of Square Eddie, ELECTRIC EDDIE, got back to the maiden ranks after running three straight in stakes company. Granted, he’s run well, but’s time to hit the finish line first. This newly turned 3-year-old just finished fifth, 10 lengths behind Shared Belief, who some believe is the best 2-year-old in the country. Mario Gutierrez jumps back on.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Socialbug, 2. Sallyana, 3. Caraquista. LONG SHOT: Zia Zia Zia.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Tasha’s Courage, 2. Senor Pegasus, 3. Soul Saver. LONG SHOT: Perfectly Legal.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Inner Groove, 2. Elvies Lane, 3. Secret Genius. LONG SHOT: Eltoninadress.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. One Time Only, 2. Shrilanka, 3. Laria. LONG SHOT: Kid Rollins.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. In Dad’s Honor, 2. A P Pepper, 3. E Equalsmcsquared. LONG SHOT: Senza Fina.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Regally Ready, 2. My Best Brother, 3. No Silent. LONG SHOT: Bio Pro.

REGALLY READY, a 7-year-old gelding, loves this Santa Anita turf course with three wins and two thirds in five tries on it. I’m not sure this is his best distance, but he has won here at a mile before. Little surprised normal barn jockey Corey Nakatani isn’t riding here for trainer Steve Asmussen, but it’s tough to complain with the choice of Mike Smith.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1.  Sidebar, 2. Tres Oros, 3. Teacher Teacher. LONG SHOT: Silk in Silver.

Did you expect a journalist not to pick this horse? Seriously, this 4-year-old filly SIDEBAR ran a good race against straight maidens at Del Mar and now drops back in with maiden claimers. Trainer Bill Spawr puts blinkers on and he’s 50% first-time blinkers and 43% with blinkers on and 38% with maiden claimers. That’s good enough for me.

Hollywood Park opinion for Sunday, Dec. 15

Race 3: #1 Shoer Hugh

Trainer Peter Miller tried to get this 3-year-old on the grass last time, but it was move to the main track due to rain. Now he goes from route-to-sprint (24%), tries first time turf again (25%) and a turf sprint (26%) which could be the winning formula.

STREET STATUS, a 3-year-old son of Street Boss, drops from straight maiden to maiden claiming $20,000, always a winning formula. Got off to a slow start in last and was bumped so had an excuse to make jockey Rafael Bejarano ride again.

==

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Boyett, 2. Usbek Thunder, 3. Sumerian. LONG SHOT: Bench Light.

==

TENTH RACE: 1. Euroclydon, 2. Im a Giant Star, 3. Kantina Kowgirl. LONG SHOT: Chilada.

EUROCLYDON is a 2-year-old daughter of Singletary, who was a pretty good turf horse in his day. This Eoin Harty trainee showed good speed in two sprint preps and now she goes long on the grass. Expect her to go to the front under new rider Corey Nakatani and never look back.

What a maddening game horse racing is

Arethusa_cb1_200 (1)

Darley Stable’s Arethusa and Corey Nakatani win the $100,000 Sharp Cat Stakes Saturday, Nov.16, at Betfair Hollywood Park. BENOIT PHOTO

I’ve told many people that I would describe myself as a good handicapper and a bad bettor. I just haven’t mastered that part of the game like my Del Mar boothmate, syndicated handicapper Bob Ike.

This past weekend proved my point again. A lot of it is my own fault for being too much of a football fan (and bettor) watching games and playing tracks in New York and Kentucky.

Then all of a sudden it’s 12:30 p.m. and Hollywood Park is going off and I don’t have a wager put in for the Players Pick 5 which costs 50 cents per combination. On Saturday, that mistake cost me $4,367.40.

The first three races were taken by my second choices in my handicapping on this blog. The last two races were won by my top pick. So for a paltry $4, I could have won a lot of coin and when you have COBRA payments every month, that’s a lot of green.

Of course, the kicker was the key race was the third when maiden Arethusa, trained by Eoin Harty, won a stakes race as a maiden, paying $23. I gave out that horse earlier in the meet here and on Horse Player Now, but did I bet her on Saturday? Nope.

Even after doing well in the Pick 5, I didn’t bet my long shot, Tebowing ($24.40), in the sixth. No, I made one bet, in the ninth on Magic Number ($9). Sure I won but not a satisfying day from a betting standpoint.

So on Sunday, I didn’t have a real good feeling, and I was right, at least early on the card. I was horrible in the first five races, but as the late Pick 5 approached, I thought my luck and handicapping had to change.

Again I was watching the Chargers and Red Zone (love Red Zone) plus a friend’s mother needed a ride to the ER so off I went.

When I got back I found my long shots Casey’s Clem ($40.60) and Empty Headed ($8.40) won the sixth and seventh races, respectively. My second choice Global Hottie ($3.40) took the eighth —- here’s a hint in following my picks, I rarely put an even-money shot on top —- and finally my third choice, Warren’s Judy ($20.80), won the last race. The payoff on the Pick 4 was $942.40 and I had none of it.

So a good weekend of handicapping and another weekend of bad betting or non-betting, whatever the case. So frustrating, but I’m sure everyone has stories like this. I just needed to vent.

Now onto handicapping this week’s cards.

Santa Anita pick for Sunday, Nov. 3

Sorry guys, fried after covering Breeders’ Cup so this will be it for Sunday unless I see something unusual. I did notice Joel Rosario riding the program so look at his horses closely. Check me on Twitter to see if I have any opinions or there are some big works.

Race 1: #10 Big Wags

This 6-year-old gelding has four lifetime wins in 11 attempts over the Santa Anita track and a front-running win at the meet. Trainer Bill Spawr is master at the route-to-sprint move (53 percent) and expect another big effort with jockey Agapito Delgadillo aboard.
