Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, April 22

Race 1 – Tam
#8 King Stormy (4-1) TURF ONLY ****
Our Eyes: This colt takes a major class drop from MSW at Gulfstream Park to maiden claimer at Tampa. Add in the addition of leading jockey Daniel Centeno and you have a strong choice here.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 6 – Tam
#6 Patient Drama (3-1) TURF ONLY ****
Our Eyes: Leading jockey Daniel Centeno jumps on which is a huge upgrade over his previous rider. Stays at the same class level so anything close to last time puts this mare in the winner’s circle.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 7 – Tam
#9 Louisianahtosauce (8-1) ****
Our Eyes: This filly has been running on the turf, but takes a drop in class plus returns to the dirt. Trainer Robert Raymound is 25% when dropping a horse two or more levels.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 8 – Tam
#5 Bold Response (6-1) TURF ONLY ****
Our Eyes: This gelding broke his maiden in front-running style last time and don’t see a reason jockey Scott Spieth won’t try the same thing. Spieth is 3-for-6 with trainer Joseph Minieri with a positive ROI. Step in class, but might go back-to-back.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Good luck.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Friday, Jan. 27

Preview: We talked about the top jockeys last time but here are some jockeys to throw out. Scott Spieth is 1-for-109, Pedro Cotto is 1-for-49, Luis Figueroa is 0-22 and Wilkin Ortiz is 0-21. They would have to win to have me even consider them.

Race 3 – Tam
#4 Moonlit Meteor (12-1) ***
Our Eyes: This gelding has won here before and gets out of the winless trainer Anthony Rini. Jockey Willie Martinez takes over and this 9-year-old likes to press the pace and rally in the stretch.
Jeff’s Playbook: 3 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EXBX 4-3-7.

Race 4 – Tam
#7 Dream Mon (8-1) ***
Our Eyes: This gelding makes his first start of the meet after running at Indiana Grand. Trainer Joseph Davis takes over and he’s 22% first time with horses. Davis is 3-for-9 with jockey Fernando De La Cruz over the last year.
Jeff’s Playbook: 3 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EXBX 7-8-3.

Race 6 – Tam
#5 Bronze Venus (4-1) ****
Our Eyes: Leading rider Daniel Centeno stays on this filly, which should be forwardly placed on the cut back from 7 furlongs.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 7 – Tam
#5 Nagzilla (4-1) ****
Our Eyes: The combination of trainer Larry Rivelli and Centeno have won 2-of-3 at the meet and 36% over the past year. Rivelli is 26% with horses off a layoff of more than 90 days.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EXBX 2-5.

Race 8 – Tam
#1 Hint of Mary (5-1) ****
Our Eyes: Trainer Christophe Clement has two first-time starters in here but he puts Centeno on this one. That’s good enough for me as they are 44% over the last year.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EXBX 1-3-9.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions on Wednesday, April 6

Preview: There is no rain the forecast until Thursday so the grass should be good dot go on the card, which is starting to notice a lack of entries with three races with just 7 entries and one race with 6. Leading jockey Antonio Gallardo might be breaking out of a slump with a few wins over the weekend.

Race 3 – Tam

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, Jan. 23

Preview: Check the morning changes because Tampa was off the turf on Friday so there will definitely be some give in the ground, if they stays on the grass. Really good card. Lots of quality so do your handicapping accordingly. Obviously Antonio Gallardo leads all jockeys on both the turf and dirt. The other top three turf jockeys are Daniel Centeno, Ronnie Allen Jr., and Fernando De la Cruz. They are also the top four jockeys on the dirt with Jose Ferrer (10 wins) also one to watch on the main track.
