Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Sunday, April 23

Race 4 – Tam
#6 Spring Me (8-1) ****
Our Eyes: This mare has won at this distance at the meet and gets a jockey change to Samy Camacho. Trainer James Gullick is 23% with sprinters. Worth a shot at the price.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 5 – Tam
#2 Nano’s Crown (4-1) ****
Our Eyes: Leading trainer Gerald Bennett has two in this race and I’ll with the longer choice with leading jockey Daniel Centeno. Bennett is 23% third off the layoff and the filly is coming out of a key race with three next out winners.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EXBX 2-7.

Race 9 – Tam
#6 Animal Trick (7-2) TURF ONLY ****
Our Eyes: Jockey Edwin Gonzalez might have hit the front too early last time at this level so maybe today a more patient ride is needed. Gonzalez is 2-for-8 with trainer Kathleen O’Connell.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EXBX 6-1-2.

Good luck.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Friday, April 1

Preview: Rain took the races off the turf on Wednesday. Tough to say what will happen Friday and there is a 80% chance of rain on Saturday. Jockey Fernando De la Cruz won three races on Wednesday as leading jockey Antonio Gallardo continues to slump.

Race 5 – Tam

#8 Don’tpassjudgement (4-1): This filly takes a drop in class for trainer Joseph Arboitanza, who is a master at turning horses back in distance. This filly has never run this short and should be plenty fit at 6 ½ furlongs.

Race 6 – Tam

#5 Prospect Drive (9-2): This filly ran second on the dirt after it was taken off the grass. She returns to the green and should be ready to go for jockey Samy Camacho and trainer Horacio Barbaran.

Race 10 – Tam

#1 Extrovert (20-1): Jockey Samy Camacho has been the king of the long shots at the meet with at least two $100 winners and hit a $30 with trainer Hernan Parra and it’s the same combination here. This gelding ships up from Gulfstream Park so this is a drop in class. He comes out of a key race that has produced three winners from eight starters so far.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, March 5

Preview: Not the number of horses we are used to seeing on a Saturday card here, but there is some quality and trainers might be pointing for next weekend’s huge card.

Race 3 – Tam

#1 Lake Drive South (9-2)

As we have said before trainer Kathleen O’Connell has had a good meet and this horse has loved this track in the past with three wins in seven tries. He’s coming off a layoff but think he can come out winging.

Race 4 — Tam

#3 Persian Poet

Trainer Horacio Barbaran and jockey Samy Camacho have hit with two $100-plus horses in recent weeks, including one on Friday. Both horses showed nothing in their PPs just like this colt and it’s probably worth $2 across the board to find out.

==

Race 9 – Tam

#5 Liar’s Smoker (10-1) (turf only)

This filly is coming off a win over the course for trainer Gerald Aschinger, who is 21% with grass horses. Jockey Mike Allen has won twice with this filly at the meet.

==

Race 10 – Tam

#7 Winter d’Amour (4-1)

Trainer Anthony Granitz has been 30% in the past on the Tampa main track going two turns. This filly did just that breaking her maiden in Indiana and now she gets to do it again.
