Santa Anita selections for Saturday, Sept. 26

Sorry, sort of took Los Alamitos off from blogging. Made some picks on HorsePlayerNow and did OK, but nothing to write home about. Beside, at work, we are learning a new computer system and my schedule is a little wacky (working a lot of days) and we have another week of that.

But Santa Anita is back and here are a few thoughts on Saturday’s card.

==

FIRST RACE: 1. Aeon, 2. Redneck Crazy, 3. Sorcerer’s Wildcat. LONG SHOT: Little Mustard.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Adeline Moon, 2. C.C. Zipp, 3. Sudden Fame. LONG SHOT: Mrs. Norris.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. #6 Elementar (12-1), 2. Curlin’s Fox, 3. Desert Steel. LONG SHOT: Singing Kitty.

This filly is returning in a tough spot, but she has won down the hill before. Now, Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens takes over for trainer Richard Mandella and they are a 33% proposition at Santa Anita. The 3-year-old is also coming out of a key race.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Venture Capitalist, 2. Kenjisstorm, 3. Lambo Luxx. LONG SHOT: Relative Time.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. #6 Rare Candy (12-1), 2. Nyquist, 3. Swipe. LONG SHOT: On Fire.

After three straight runs on the grass, including a win, trainer David Hofmans has decided it’s time to find out if this son of Twirling Candy can run on the dirt. There are two big works on the dirt and the distance should be no problem. It’s a matter if he has the class.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Mal Verde, 2. Smack Talk, 3. Labour. LONG SHOT: Kill Shot.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1.beholder, 2. Warren’s Veneda, 3. Wild in the Saddle. LONG SHOT: My Monet.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Songbird, 2. Jade Princess, 3. Pretty N Cool. LONG SHOT: Vieja Luna.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. #8 Hard Not to Like (3-1) BEST BET, 2. Photo Call, 3. Lady Pimperna;. LONG SHOT: Sharla Rae.

Trainer Christophe Clement shipped west in May to take a Grade I with this mare and he’s trying it again, with the same jockey, Victor Espinoza. This 6-year-old has a wicked urn of foot in the stretch and while she hasn’t gone this far before that should be no problem.

==

10TH RACE: 1. #2 Sammy Mandeville (10-1), 2. Hoppertunity, 3. Bayern. LONG SHOT: Point Piper.

This 4-year-old has had one problem this year: Catch a Flight. Well, that Richard Mandella horse isn’t running in this race so let’s give this 4-year-old a shot with leading rider Rafael Bejarano aboard. The son of Rock Hard Ten finished second in the Longacres Mile and that race has produced three next out winners.

==

11TH RACE: 1. Coach Q, 2. Canada, 3. Osceola Pond. LONG SHOT: Strong Values.

==

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Rattataptap, 2. All Star Bub, 3. Tall and Sweet. LONG SHOT: Twister Ginger.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Spring Action, 2. Crane Lodge, 3. Couldashouldadid. LONG SHOT: Beach Fever.

FIFTH RACE: 1. Queen’s Balladier, 2. Scatfish, 3. Taylor Lane. LONG SHOT: Humoristica.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. When We Met, 2. Relentless Heat, 3. Dress Code. LONG SHOT: Juniper Pass.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Warren’s Nicholas, 2. Wicked Heat, 3. Silver Torch. LONG SHOT: Shackleford Banks.

WARREN’S NICHOLAS (9-2), a 6-year-old gelding, is making his second start off a nearly 2-year layoff. He got his legs back under him in a sprint and now trainer Jorge Gutierrez sends him long on the grass, where he broke his maiden. Jockey Joe Talamo had his choice of a few others in here and stays with this one.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Starzilla (best bet), 2. Dench, 3. Silent Ruler. LONG SHOT: Deep Digger.

Jockey Joe Talamo goes for the late daily double by sticking with STARZILLA (7-2), a son of Rock Hard Ten. The 5-year-old has been facing some toughies in the MSW ranks and drops into a maiden claimer for the first time for trainer Art Sherman. Plus STARZILLA is coming out of a key race.

Santa Anita selections for Sunday, Jan. 11 (off the turf)

RAIN AT SANTA ANITA OFF THE TURF SO JUST THROW MY TURF PICKS OUT THE WINDOW. I WILL ONLY GRADE THE DIRT RACES.

FIRST RACE: 1. Greeley Awesome, 2. Ezio, 3. Sizzlin’ Joe. LONG SHOT: Empty Headed.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Lucy in Diamonds (best bet), 2. Thermodynamics, 3. Exfanofsixties. LONG SHOT: It Girl.

LUCY IN DIAMONDS (4-1) is a first-time starter from the Jerry Hollendorfer barn, which hits at 30% with this type. She has been training at Pomona and is by a good first out sire in Rock Hard Ten. Jockey Elvis Trujillo (21% with The Dorf)  jumps on.

==

Race 5: #3 Autumn Flower (10-1) SCRATCHED

This daughter of Flower Alley gets a huge post switch after starting from the No. 10 hole at Del Mar. She had no shot that day but still came running in the lane to finish a good fifth for trainer Dan Hendricks and jockey Alex Solis. Look for further improvement as Hendricks is 22% with MSW.

FIFTH RACE: 1. Scandal, 2. Madam Aamoura, 3. Conquest Artura. LONG SHOT: Caradini.

As you can see I liked Autumn Flower, but had to go in a different direction. SCANDAL has been training well for trainer Richard Mandella and she made up a lot of ground on Nov. 8 at Del Mar.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Kenji’s Thunder, 2. Sky Preacher, 3. Nakamoto. LONG SHOT: Delaney’s Joy.

Don’t like the post, but do like the breeding on KENJI’S THUNDER (sire is Scat Daddy and is out of a Rahy mare) so this one should love the turf and going around two turns for the first time. Jockey Corey Nakatani stays aboard this 2-year-old, who made his debut just a week ago.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Zinvor, 2. Lucky Logan, 3. Peradventure. LONG SHOT: Naomi’s Gift.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Kakulka, 2. Market Quote, 3. Highly Rated. LONG SHOT: Sahha.

==

CLICKJAB finished a decent third in her debut as the 8-5 favorite while going down the hill. Here she gets two turns for the first time, which she figures to enjoy being out of Rock Hard Ten and a Gone West mare. Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith stays aboard for trainer Gary Mandella.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Clickjab, 2. Taelyns Prince, 3. Superlooper. LONG SHOT: Robert E. Lee.

Trainer Marty Jones sends out CLICKJAB, a son of Rock Hard Ten, for his initial effort. Jones is 21% from 28 first-time starters and he’s 2-for-10 with first-time turfers. Hall of Fame Mike Smith takes the mount. TAELYNS PRINCE comes out of a key race and SUPERLOOPER has a pair of big works.

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Johnny Reb (best bet), 2. Betting McCann Can, 3. Meringue Pie. LONG SHOT: Image of Joplin.

Trainer Richard Baltas has had a good 2014 so far, winning races at nearly a 20% clip. He claimed this 3-year-old gelding JOHNNY REB for $16,000 last time out and sends him around two turns for the first time, a move he wins at 22%.

Santa Anita selections for Friday, April 25

Remember first post is 3 p.m. on Friday.

FIRST RACE: 1. Sweet Mz. Poppet, 2. Take Back Spring, 3. City Ride. LONG SHOT: Wacky Miss.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Take a Risk, 2. Primal Revival, 3. Ready to Jam. LONG SHOT: Stadtpark.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Magic Number, 2. Addendum, 3. Masical Arts. LONG SHOT: She’s a Go Girl.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Joelito, 2. Spring Up, 3. Fire With Fire. LONG SHOT: Quick Casablanca.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Carbonite (best bet), 2. Newfound Gold, 3. Dunmore East. LONG SHOT: Truelee Scrappin.

Trainer Robertino Diodoro had a big winter/spring meet and hopes it carries over to the new spring/summer meet. He claimed this 8-year-old gelding CARBONITE last time out and moves him in class. Diodoro is 31% first off the claim and puts barn rider Fernando Perez aboard. They are a 27% combo at Santa Anita.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Smooth Talker, 2. Upbeat Mood, 3. Velvet Mesquite. LONG SHOT: Hijra.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Tiznow Or Then, 2. I Don’t Care Who, 3. Magic Mark. LONG SHOT: Garen.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Misdeed, 2. Van Fraassen, 3. Kozani. LONG SHOT: Navarre.

Trainer Richard Mandella drops MISDEED, a 4-year-old gelding, into a maiden claimer for the first time and the son of Rock Hard Ten should appreciate the class relief. This will be his third start off the layoff and Mandella is 31% in maiden claiming races.

Santa Anita picks for Saturday, April 5

FIRST RACE: 1. Yard Line, 2. Vegas Strip, 3. Reno Rebel. LONG SHOT: Guggenheim.

I couldn’t talk anyone off any horse in this maiden race, which could turn into a key race down the line. If this Pick 5 doesn’t pay big bucks, I’ll be stunned.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Pulpit’s Express, 2. Volkonsky, 3. Storm Fighter. LONG SHOT: Poshsky.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Whine for Wine, 2. Life Is a Joy, 3. Gangnam Guy. LONG SHOT: Alert Bay.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Sammy Mandeville, 2. Act, 3. Green Tag. LONG SHOT: Designated.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Ria Antonia, 2. Fashion Plate, 3. Arethusa. LONG SHOT: Bajan.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Chati’s On Top, 2. Norastone, 3. Princess Genevieve. LONG SHOT: Cause Ur My Babe.

This daughter of Old Topper, CHATI’S ON TOP, runs in Southern California for the first time off a Golden Gate maiden win. Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith takes over as Mike Puype takes over the training. The tow are a 40% proposition the last two years at Santa Anita.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Diversy Harbor, 2. Nashoba’s Gold, 3. Savings Account. LONG SHOT: Tiz Kissable.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Schoolofhardrocks, 2. Candy Boy, 3. California Chrome. LONG SHOT: Hoppertunity.

SCHOOLOFHARDROCKS, a son of Rock Hard Ten, was the “wise guy” horse before the Grade II San Felipe with a series of big works off a long layoff. He ran OK but was no match for California Chrome, who is also running here. Again this David Hofmans trainee has been training well coming into the race and must finish first or second to have any chance at running in the Kentucky Derby. Likewise, CANDY BOY has to finish first or second to get to the Derby while CALIFORNIA CHROME and HOPPERTUNITY already have enough point to get to Kentucky.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Advisory, 2. Tommy O, 3. Brave Act. LONG SHOT: Sir Macho.

==

10TH RACE: 1. Toledo Eddie (best bet), 2. Too Fast to Pass, 3. Seeking the Sherif. LONG SHOT: Explain.

TOLEDO EDDIE, a 5-year-old gelding, is a perfect 3-for-3 on the Santa Anita Derby. The son of Ministers Wild Cat has seven lifetime wins while many in this race have just one or two. He’s moving into open company but has been working well for trainer Craig Dollase.

==

11TH RACE: 1. Indygo F M A, 2. Kerrilynn, 3. Joeandbetty’sbaby. LONG SHOT: I’m Tops.

Friday’s third choice winners: 2 (Chicsdigtheshark $12.20, third; My Sweet Addiction $7.40, seventh)

Del Mar, Horse racing

Updated Del Mar picks for Wednesday, Sept. 4

FIRST RACE (The C.E.R.F): 1. Madame Cactus, 2. Wednesday, 3. Big Honey Bee. LONG SHOT: Gypsy Robin.

MADAME CACTUS has been on the sidelines since last Novemeber, but trainer Peter Eurton figures to have her fit and ready to run. WEDNESDAY and BIG HONEY BEE come out of a key race that has produced two winners so far.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Pebble Beach Baby, 2. Bas, 3. Lady Rosamond. LONG SHOT: Explosive Argument.

Trainer Mike Puype has had a fairly quiet Del Mar meet after a big Hollywood Park, but his horses might be ready to cycle around. PEBBLE BEACH BABY, a daughter of Rock Hard Ten, is dropping in class off a middle-of-the-road effort. The key here is Puype is cutting her back from a route to a sprint and he does very well with that angle. It also doesn’t hurt jockey Garrett Gomez jumps aboard.  EXPLOSIVE ARGUMENT has been scratched.

==

THIRD RACE (Oak Tree Juvenile Turf): 1. Diamond Bachelor, 2. Station House, 3. Ontology. LONG SHOT: Home School.

DIAMOND BACHELOR and STATION HOUSE were two of the most impressive winners at the meet, both scoring at first asking on the grass and around two turns as 2-year-olds. ONTOLOGY is bred to love the grass and could be the upsetter but it will tough to beat the top two.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. KARMA KING (best bet), 2. Candy Anniversary, 3. Big Medicine Man. LONG SHOT: Maxx the Kid.

Trainer Craig Dollase is deadly with first-time starters (36 percent the last two years) and even more so with 2-year-olds at Del Mar. KARMA KING, a son of Pure Prize, has a bullet work show on Aug. 23 (best of 42) and should be ready to do some serious running. Once again, Gomez jumps on and he has been one of the meet’s hottest jockeys the last two weeks.

==

FIFTH RACE (Pirate’s Bounty ): 1. Private Zone, 2. Roman Threat, 3. So Brilliant. LONG SHOT: Koast.

This is a tough race and I even left out graded stakes winner RAIL TRIP, who I’m just not sure he’s ready to go all out in this spot to win. PRIVATE ZONE is making his first start since running in Dubai and trainer Doug O’Neill figures to have him ready to go.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Magic Channel, 2. Quiet Force, 3. Warrant. LONG SHOT: Somethings Unusual.

MAGIC CHANNEL is going for the hat trick as he has two wins over the grass already. The son of English Channel was claimed last time out by Jerry Hollendorfer, who is 27 percent first off the claim.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Crystalline Indy, 2. Hanserella, 3. That’s a Bingo. LONG SHOT: Heavens Stairway.

CRYSTALLINE INDY hasn’t raced since July 13 at Hollywood Park, but she has been training well over the Del Mar Polytrack. Trainer Phil D’Amato, Mike Mitchell’s assistant, is 43 percent second time out. here’s hoping he gets his first win of the meet on closing day.

==

EIGHTH RACE (Del Mar Futurity) 1. Indexical, 2. Dance With Fate, 3. Can the Man. LONG SHOT: Skydreamin.

The big race of the final day is this 7-furlong affair for 2-year-olds. It’s tough to pick against trainer Bob Baffert and Can the Man because Baffert has won this race so many times, but we’re going with INDEXICAL. The son of Latent Heat improved a ton while breaking his maiden 18 days ago. He gets a nice outside post and will be able to spy the speed inside. DANCE WITH FATE also improved second time out and figures to only get better as the distances grow.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Appealing Tale, 2. Amazing Hearted, 3. Omega Star. LONG SHOT: Derringer.

APPEALING TALE has been away since January but you have that magic team of trainer Peter Miller and jockey Garrett Gomez, who have hit for more 36 percent winners the last two years at Del Mar.

==

10th RACE: 1. Serene Melody, 2. Nicegirlsfnishlast, 3. Fanticola. LONG SHOT: Switched Up.

Trainer John Shirreffs mainly plies his trade in New York, but Zenyatta’s conditioner left a few horses out West. SERENE MELODY is one of those as she is owned by the Lewis Trust and out of the mare Serena’s Song. This daughter of Street Cry will be trying the grass for the first time and going two turns, too. Shirreffs can get them ready off the layoff.
