Santa Anita opinions for Friday, Jan. 9

Sorry just too many things on the plate to do full selections today. Be back at it tomorrow. I wasn’t real enthused about the card. There is a carryover in the Pick 6, but believe it will be hit.

Race 3: #3 Perfect Set (4-1)

This 5-year-old gelding was favored at this level one race back at Del Mar. This son of Pleasantly Perfect hasn’t run much on dirt, but his sire liked it. Trainer Art Sherman is 26% on dirt and 24% with horses off a 31-60-day layoff. Jockey Alex Solis stays aboard.

Race 8: #3 Kiss At Midnight (7-2)

Trainer Peter Miller is 27% with debuting maiden claimers and Decarchy is a good first out sire. Jockey Elvis Trujillo is 25% with Miller and have to believe this one is live.

Watch out for #6 Lazy Lightnin, whose listed trainer is Brian Pitnick (1-for-29 on the year), but clocker Andy Harrington reports that the horse has been working with a saddle towel from trainer Jeff Mullins’ barn. Might be a betting coup in the making.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Willing to Travel (best bet), 2. Soul Driver, 3. Film Freak. LONG SHOT: Pretentious.

WILLING TO TRAVEL (2-1), a son of Pleasantly Perfect, gave an even effort when coming down the hill, making up some ground the stretch. Should enjoy the stretch back out to two turns, something he did twice at Arlington Park. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is 23% sprint-to-route and 32% with jockey Rafael Bejarano aboard.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Highly Rated, 2. Belonging, 3. Sheza Eyeopener. LONG SHOT: Wildy Excessive.

NEXTDOORNEIGHBOR (2-1), a 7–year-old gelding, returned from a 13-month absence to run a bang-up second at this level and was promptly claimed by trainer Robertino Diodoro, who is 30% first off the claim.

Santa Anita picks for Wednesday, Jan. 1 (updated)

First, Happy New Year.

Second, jockey Tyler Baze returns to the saddle after a suspension for substance abuse. Let’s hope he has his act together in his personal life and on the track.

Lots of scratches early.

FIRST RACE: 1. Rebelution (SCRATCHED), 2. Sunland Vintage, 3. Glad’s Gals. LONG SHOT: Lethal Miss.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Govenor Charlie (SCRATCHED), 2. Little Jerry, 3. Fury Kapcori. LONG SHOT: Safety Belt.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Joe Carl, 2. Go to the Pulpit, 3. Cook Inlet. LONG SHOT: Romeo Royale.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Right on Schedule, 2. Tommy’s Kid, 3. Atticus Scouts. LONG SHOT: Robertino.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Setsuko, 2. Say Ow, 3. Ever Rider. LONG SHOT: Scorpion Warrior.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Perfecta, 2. Smart N Dreamy, 3. Boller Bomb. LONG SHOT: Ricspretentiousgal.

Interesting jockey switch here on PERFECTA, a daughter of Pleasantly Perfect. Joe Talamo has ridden three of the last four times, not necessarily with great success, so trainer Richard Mandella goes to the red hot Gary Stevens. They are a 40% proposition the last year so why try to fight it.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Betty Bing Bing, 2. Very Thankful, 3. Glorious Rebecca. LONG SHOT: Exclusive Girl.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Rever de Vous, 2. Full Ransom, 3. Sushi Empire. LONG SHOT: Saintly Joan.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Apache Ambush, 2. Second Proposal, 3. Goyan. LONG SHOT: Grand Humor.
