Santa Anita opinions for Easter Sunday, March 27

Preview: Just an OK card with large fields hard to find. Jockey Edwin Maldonado has been on fire lately and Kent Desormeaux is in the process of changing agents.

Race 6 – SA

#8 Bandido Too (7-2): This gelding has been in the money 50% of the time on the dirt (8-of-16). He finished second at this level last time and cuts back a half-furlong. There’s a good work coming into the ce and Edwin Maldonado rides for Craig Dollase.

Race 7 – SA

#6 Justonetimebaby (4-1): This is a first-timer from the Richard Baltas barn, who is 29% first time turf and 26% in MSW races. There are two big works coming into the race and the sire Latent Heat gets 9% first time turf.

Race 10 – SA

#1 Papa Joey (6-1): We think trainer Phil D’Amato got away with one first time when he ran this gelding in maiden claimer finishing second despite a slow start. He now moves it up in class and tries turf for the first time. The sire Papa Clem is 13% first time turf and D’Amato is 24% going dirt to turf.

Del Mar selections for Sunday, Sept. 6

FIRST RACE: 1. #3 SEND ME A SIGN (8-1) best bet, 2. Audra, 3 Lily Ka. LONG SHOT: Untouchable U.

This 3-year-old comes out of the most productive key race of the meet as five horses have come back to win their next race. The daughter of Include finished 10th of 12 but encountered when she was bumped at the 3/16th-pole. Jockey Mike Smith sees fit to stick for trainer Ron Ellis and so will we.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Black N Beauty, 2. American Blend, 3. Accelerant. LONG SHOT: The Mad Hungarian.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Baruta, 2. Tribal Gal, 3. Uzziel. LONG SHOT: Ben’s Duchess

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Ipray, 2. L X Sunrise, 3. Belle Evon. LONG SHOT: Watdifrenzdzitmake.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. #4 Cowboy (12-1), 2. Mixio, 3. Second Summer. LONG SHOT: Stardom Found.

The Papa Clem colt turned in an improved effort when moved to the grass and only figures to get better in his third race. Jockey Mario Gutierrez rode him in his debut for the underrated Bobby Wayne Grayson so he knows what this 3-year-old is all about.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Devoted One, 2. Lucky Folie, 3. Lemon Drop Sis. LONG SHOT: Mokat.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Prospect Park, 2. Soul Driver, 3. Om. LONG SHOT: Crittenden.

==

Del Mar selections for Thursday, Nov. 20 (Bing Crosby Season) UPDATED

Entering the third week of racing at the new Del Mar fall meet and we see some interesting trends as far as post positions go.

On the Polytrack, inside is still the place to be, just like it was in the summer. Post positions 1-4 have won 62% of the races (18 of 29). The same can’t be said for the route races as the 1 and 2 posts are a combined 1 for 11 while posts 3 to 6 are 7 for 11 (72%).

On the turf course, there have been only three 5-furlong races so no real trends there. However, go around two turns, trends have changed. It was tough to win from the inside during the summer, but now posts 1 to 3 are 9 for 18 (50%). Keep an eye on it.

==

FIRST RACE: 1. Jedi Mind Trick, 2. Rocked Twice, 3. Vegas Street. LONG SHOT: Preacher Roe.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Alice Roadtrain, 2. Here’s Bella, 3. Hollywood Royalty. LONG SHOT: Private Marina.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Lookin for Money, 2. Golds Venice, 3. Lady Danger. LONG SHOT: Chia Love.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Kohala, 2. Push Girl, 3. Underhill Drive. LONG SHOT: Siena Grace.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Milton, 2. Pioneerof the West, 3. Cyrus Alexander. LONG SHOT: Madiba (SCRATCHED) new long shot: Call It Good.

I was prepared to make CYRUS ALEXANDER my best bet of the day but those post position stats made me re-think the race. MILTON comes out of the the DORTMUND maiden race, which has already produced one winner, so we’ll go that way, but an exacta box on the top three might be a way to go. MADIBA, a $700,000 yearling purchase, has been a major disappointment, but he is the “other” Hollendorfer in this spot as Jerry also starts Cyrus.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Q’ Viva, 2. Comin’offthebench, 3. Nero’s Bench. LONG SHOT: Denotation.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Super Ability (best bet), 2. Hay Dude, 3. Bettys Bambino. LONG SHOT: Mega Heat.

Jockey Joe Talamo jumps on SUPER ABILITY (4-1), a 6-year-old gelding. which is stretching out after third place finish vs. Cal Breds. This son on Langfuhr has won in open company before at Del Mar. Look for Talamo to try to go wire-to-wire.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Clem Juice, 2. Cape’s Rockette (SCRATCHED), 3. Caymus Kat. LONG SHOT: South Texas. New picks: 1. Clem Juice, 2. Gold Journey, 3. Caymus Kat. LONG SHOT: South Texas.

CLEM JUICE (6-1) is a 2-year-old daughter of Papa Clem, whose offspring does well first time out and vs. Cal-bred competition. On top of that jockey Iggy Puglisi and trainer Paul Aguirre are a good combo and seem do well in the final race of the day a lot. This filly has been training well at Los Alamitos.

Del Mar selections for Sunday, Nov. 16 UPDATED (Bing Crosby Season)

Couple of big scratches already this morning. Also I’ll be doing the Del Mar handicapping seminar near the Seaside terrace at 11:30 a.m. Come by and say hi.

FIRST RACE: 1. Pursuitofparadise, 2. Acute, 3. Parada. LONG SHOT: J and S Express.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Light the City, 2. Achiever’s Legacy, 3. Maybellene. LONG SHOT: Into Oblivion.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Steam Play, 2. Blue Law, 3. Force. LONG SHOT: Serbian Syclone.

Trainer Bob Baffert wins 23% with first-time starters and he owns half of STEAM PLAY (2-1), a son of Stroll, who has been training well for his debut. Will have to gun from the No. 1 hole, but it appears the works say he can do that under barn jockey Martin Garcia. This is a very point race as the newcomers are all working well.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Tosheen, 2. Crux, 3. Kozani. LONG SHOT: Public Policy.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Militant, 2. Boss Cat, 3. Bittter Heat. LONG SHOT: Smokey’s Legacy.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Sir Barclay, 2. Mosso, 3. Bourne Hot. LONG SHOT: Dynamo Dixie.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Tale of Papa Nick (BEST BET) SCRATCHED, 2. Wild At Best, 3. No Comparison. LONG SHOT: Radiant Journey. New picks: 1. Wild At Best, No Comparison, 3. Fast Magoo. LONG SHOT: Radiant Journey.

TALE OF PAPA NICK (6-1), a 3-year-old filly, is by Papa Clem, who is a good first-out sire, especially in the Cal-bred ranks. Trainer Richard Baltas has come out firing at this meet with two winners from nine starts. WILD AT BEST has the experience edge and only figures to improve. TALE OF PAPA NICK was scratched this morning.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Law Dog, 2. Lindante, 3. Eddie’s Turn. LONG SHOT: Smart Journey.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Dr. Suer, 2. Tough Sunday (SCRATCHED), 3. Neveradoubt. LONG SHOT: Lovely Summer. NEW PICKS: 1. Dr. Suer, 2. Price of Glory, 3. Neveradoubt. LONG SHOT: Lovely Summer.

Los Alamitos fall early opinions for Friday, Sept. 5

Del Mar is over and Los Alamitos is back for a few weeks before Santa Anita returns. Will try to do full cards on Los Al when I can and will definitely give opinions every day.

==

Race 3: #3 Papa Kade (8-1)

This son of Papa Clem ran into the very fast Wake Up Nick in his career debut and also got off to a slow start. Been away since then and drops into a maiden claimer here for trainer Doug O’Neill and jockey Felipe Martinez.

==

Race 6: #3 Regally Soul (9-2)

This Buzz horse won for us at 21-1 at the earlier Los Alamitos meet so we know he likes the track. He just missed last time out at Del Mar and just keeps improving. Jockey Fernando Perez reunites for trainer Walther Solis.
