FERRERO (6-1), a son of Old Topper, makes his debut going 5 ½ furlongs. Old Toppers do well first time out, especially in Cal bred company. The 2-year-old had a good gate drill over the track last week for trainer Mike Machowsky.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Monument (best bet), 2. Got Even, 3. Pepnic. LONG SHOT: Kate’s Event.

MONUMENT (8-1), a 4-year-old colt, is a perfect 2-for-2 on the Del Mar Polytrack. Still above his claimed level and pressed the pace last time on the turf before tiring. Jockey Agapito Delgadillo stays aboard for trainer Alfredo Marquez.

==

WILLIAMS BAY (3-1), a daughter of Kitten’s Joy, is bred to run all day long. She turned in an even effort coming down the hill at Santa Anita for trainer Tom Proctor, who is 25% with second time maiden starters. Apprentice Drayden Van Dyke jumps aboard. PENNY SIXPENCE is the likely favorite, but a horse has yet to win from the No. 1 post on the turf at the meet and the Neil Drysdale trainee got moved in by a scratch.

Santa Anita selections for Thursday, June 26

Heading into the final week of the new Santa Anita spring/summer meet, beware of a couple things:

Peter Miller might be pulling out all stops to win the training title as he trails Doug O’Neill by three, 25-22, going into the final four days of racing.

Also, with no turf racing at Los Alamitos the next two weeks, you might see trainers put horses in grass races as a prep for Del Mar, which begins on July 17.

The same is true with trainers in other races.

Del Mar’s new “Ship N Win” program allows out-of-state horses a prep during the last three weeks of Santa Anita or the two weeks at Los Alamitos before they make their first start at Del Mar and still allow them to cash the $1,000 starting gate fee and 33.3% purse bonus.

Trainers like Cody Autrey and Molly Pearson have already started horses like that and so have the likes of Miller and John Sadler.

==

FIRST RACE: 1. Mel’s Game, 2. Dr Williams, 3. Two Is to Many. LONG SHOT: Cook Inlet.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Missing Groom, 2. Yard Line, 3. Sing With Bling. LONG SHOT: Gold Chaser.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Customer Base, 2. Plaza de Indias, 3. Charlie Em. LONG SHOT: Phonybooksnrecords.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Sweet Mz. Poppet (best bet), 2. Tribal Express, 3. Soul Flyer. LONG SHOT: Fab Four Ever.

SWEET MZ. POPPET ran a good second place first time out and has had two months off to grow. The daughter of Old Topper must be doing well as she has two bullet works on her tab. Jockey Agapito Delgadillo should be able to stalk from the outside post for owner/trainer George L. Lopez.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Surfer Moon, 2. Cernobbio, 3. Pyrotechnics. LONG SHOT: Stolen Property.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Sunday Rules, 2. Majestic Jewel, 3. Courageous Call. LONG SHOT: Sweet Factory.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Happybirthdaybaby, 2. Rhodium, 3. Heat Du Jour. LONG SHOT: Always a Chance.

==

EIGHT RACE: 1. Philanderer, 2. Juansagain, 3. Midnight Roar. LONG SHOT: Alsace.

Trainer Karen Headley drops PHILANDERER, a son of Perfect Mandate, to the bottom of the maiden claiming ranks off a debut in which he pressed the pace for three furlongs before tiring. Headley shows positive marks in second starts and the maiden claiming ranks plus speed jockey Edwin Maldonado sticks around.

Santa Anita picks for Saturday, April 5

FIRST RACE: 1. Yard Line, 2. Vegas Strip, 3. Reno Rebel. LONG SHOT: Guggenheim.

I couldn’t talk anyone off any horse in this maiden race, which could turn into a key race down the line. If this Pick 5 doesn’t pay big bucks, I’ll be stunned.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Pulpit’s Express, 2. Volkonsky, 3. Storm Fighter. LONG SHOT: Poshsky.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Whine for Wine, 2. Life Is a Joy, 3. Gangnam Guy. LONG SHOT: Alert Bay.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Sammy Mandeville, 2. Act, 3. Green Tag. LONG SHOT: Designated.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Ria Antonia, 2. Fashion Plate, 3. Arethusa. LONG SHOT: Bajan.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Chati’s On Top, 2. Norastone, 3. Princess Genevieve. LONG SHOT: Cause Ur My Babe.

This daughter of Old Topper, CHATI’S ON TOP, runs in Southern California for the first time off a Golden Gate maiden win. Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith takes over as Mike Puype takes over the training. The tow are a 40% proposition the last two years at Santa Anita.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Diversy Harbor, 2. Nashoba’s Gold, 3. Savings Account. LONG SHOT: Tiz Kissable.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Schoolofhardrocks, 2. Candy Boy, 3. California Chrome. LONG SHOT: Hoppertunity.

SCHOOLOFHARDROCKS, a son of Rock Hard Ten, was the “wise guy” horse before the Grade II San Felipe with a series of big works off a long layoff. He ran OK but was no match for California Chrome, who is also running here. Again this David Hofmans trainee has been training well coming into the race and must finish first or second to have any chance at running in the Kentucky Derby. Likewise, CANDY BOY has to finish first or second to get to the Derby while CALIFORNIA CHROME and HOPPERTUNITY already have enough point to get to Kentucky.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Advisory, 2. Tommy O, 3. Brave Act. LONG SHOT: Sir Macho.

==

10TH RACE: 1. Toledo Eddie (best bet), 2. Too Fast to Pass, 3. Seeking the Sherif. LONG SHOT: Explain.

TOLEDO EDDIE, a 5-year-old gelding, is a perfect 3-for-3 on the Santa Anita Derby. The son of Ministers Wild Cat has seven lifetime wins while many in this race have just one or two. He’s moving into open company but has been working well for trainer Craig Dollase.

==

11TH RACE: 1. Indygo F M A, 2. Kerrilynn, 3. Joeandbetty’sbaby. LONG SHOT: I’m Tops.
