Santa Anita opinions for Sunday, Feb. 7

Preview: Early first post and only eight races on the biggest football day of the year. Keep an eye on apprentice jockey David Lopez, who has been riding lights out lately and the bigger outfits are finally starting to take notice. Give his horses extra consideration.

Race 1: #5 Tinderette (turf only) (12-1)

Trainer Jeff Mullins is 26% with horses running for the first time on the grass. This filly showed a little speed in her debut and now tries going long, Mullins takes the blinkers off and jockey Tyler Baze stays on. The sire More Than Ready is 13% first time turf.

 ==

Race 2: #2 Moments Notiz (5-2)

It took a while but East Coast-based trainer David Jacobson finally hit the winner’s circle this week. He brought this gelding West and drops him to his lowest leverl and gets Rafael Bejarano to ride. Jacobson is 22% second off the layoff and this 8-year-old is 21-10-3-4 at 6 furlongs.

==.

Race 8: #8 Back Street Cat (12-1)

This filly has improved with each outing and at these bottom level maiden claiming races wacky things can happen. Trainer Felix Gonzalez is 23% third off the layoff.

Santa Anita Park selections for Thursday, June 5

FIRST RACE: 1. Always an Angle, 2. Soar Home, 3. Super Defence. LONG SHOT: Wildly Excessive.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Heart of Paradise (best bet), 2. Screaming Skylar, 3. Meta Mu. LONG SHOT: C’Mon Sister.

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer sends out HEART OF PARADISE, a first-timer by the sire More Than Ready, who is good first time out. Hollendorfer is 29% with first-timers and 23% with 2-year-olds. Hollendorfer has already sent out one first-timer this meet. Jockey Corey Nakatani jumps aboard.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Theatre Star, 2. Kathleen Rose, 3. Unusual Hottie. LONG SHOT: Spring Bloom.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Wine Country Wanda, 2. Lust for Life, 3. Charissa. LONG SHOT: Italian Hamony.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Sir Macho, 2. Hobbits Hero, 3. Go Black Tie. LONG SHOT: Green Tag.

SIR MACHO, a 3-year-old gelding, draws an outside post going a route of ground on the turf, but jockey Corey Nakatani should be able to work out a nice trip. Trainer Richard Baltas has been on fire (31% with claimers) and has put in a couple of big works into the son of Macho Uno.

Santa Anita picks for Friday, Feb. 21 (updated)

FIRST RACE: 1. Passion Bucket, 2. Warrens Puppy Love, 3. Marla Hooch. LONG SHOT: Let’s Dance.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Oso Smart (best bet), 2. Matt the Hammer, 3. Sir Macho. LONG SHOT: Lucky Jack.

At first glance it would appear jockey Fernando Perez got his choice of two horses trained by Adam Kitchingman here, but we don’t think that was the case. Jockey Edwin Maldonado rides far more often for Kitchingman and he takes the ride on OSO SMART, a son of Curlin. The 3-year-old has tactical speed and drops looking to cash while making his dirt debut. MATT THE HAMMER will be tough first off the claim for Kitchingman. Can you say exacta box?

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Awesome Return, 2. Texas Ryano, 3. Lucky Views. LONG SHOT: Neverwherecauseway.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Goldilocks Planet, 2. Vicki Victoria, 3. Cayanna. LONG SHOT: Tangerine Tickle.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Surfer Moon (SCRATCHED), 2. Warriors Ridge, 3. Incline Village. LONG SHOT: Next Right. New picks: 1. Incline Village, 2. Warriors Ridge, 3. Next Right. LONG SHOT: Misdeed.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Senator Bob, 2. Newfound Gold, 3. Baron Von Red. LONG SHOT: Bruno’s Wager.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Meringue Pie, 2. Bobby Flay, 3. Turn on the Pumps (SCRATCHED). LONG SHOT: Dancer Humor. New picks: 1. Meringue Pie, 2. Bobby Flay, 3. Dancer Humor. LONG SHOT: Trouble X Two.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. More Stormyweather, 2. Among the Stars, 3. Parade Bound. LONG SHOT: Oh Boo Hoo.

This 3-year-old More Than Ready filly (MORE STORMYWEATHER) moves down to Southern California from Golden Gate Fields off a fourth-place finish in November. She has been given 2½ months off to grow and seems to have a touch of speed. She gets a nice outside draw for trainer Bill Spawr, who is batting 36% with maiden claimers.
