Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, April 2

Preview: The chance of thunderstorms was 80% for today’s races so I didn’t even look at the grass races, all four of them, since I doubt if they get run on that surface. Trainer Robert Raymond won two races on Wednesday and might be heating up.

Race 6: #9 Zach’s Image (6-1): Trainer Monte Thomas is 20% overall with first-time starters and he was 44% last year at Tampa Bay Downs with an average mutuel of $32. We won’t get that, but this gelding has a good work coming into the race.

Race 8: #8 Media Rules (9-2): The only time this filly ran at 5 1/2 furlongs she won and that’s what she gets here in her 2016 comeback race. Jockey Fernando De La Cruz and trainer Jason DaCosta are at 15% combination.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Friday, Jan. 15

Preview: Just a mediocre card as only three of the 10 races have 10 or more entries. Better things this weekend one hopes.

Race 2: #2 Harryhee (5-1)

Broke his maiden last year at first asking and might be rounding back into form after second place finish last time out. Trainer Monte Thomas and jockey Ademar Santos are 29% together.

 ==

Race 7:  #5 Bluesville (turf only) (6-1) ***

Trainer Kathleen O’Connell has been on a roll lately and this mare take a class drop off a fifth-place finish. Jockey Jose Ferrer is 17% with a positive ROI with O’Connell.

==

Race 9:  #3 Lilies and Roses (turf only) (9-2)

Like we said trainer Kathleen O’Connell has been on a roll and with no one bigger than leading jockey Antonio Gallardo, who she is 41% with at the meet. This filly used to run in Southern California and may hold a class edge over these maidens.

Santa Anita (plus a few others) opinions for Saturday, June 13

Race 2: #6 Broke the Mold (4-1)

This 5-year-old showed speed against better and now drops to the bottom of the maiden claiming ranks. Trainer Carla Gaines is 40% when dropping a horse two of more class levels and she’s 24% going from a route to a sprint.

==

Race 4: #6 Frandontjudge (turf only) (8-1)

Our Eyes:  Trainer Victor Garcia claimed this filly and moves her up in class. Garcia is 37% from 19 starters first off the claim. Look three races back and this 4-year-old finished a close second at this exact level.

==

Race 9: #1 Unusual Storm (10-1)

She had a prep over the dirt, but this daughter of Unusual Heat (12% first time out on turf) belongs on the grass. Underrated jockey Flavien Prat rides for trainer Gary Mandella.

 ==

BELMONT PARK

Race 8: #7 Missy Bay (turf only) (12-1)

Trainer Dominick Schettino has had a good meet so far and this one was in fine form before a layoff. She is moving up in class but Schettino was 21% with NY-breds in the past at this meet and 20% in turf sprints.

==

CHURCHILL DOWNS

Race 2: #5 Muntij (8-1)

Our Eyes:  Trainer Daniel Pietz is 31% with horses running two sprints into their first route race and this son of Daaher is bred to love the added distance. Jockey Marcelino Pedroza has been hot lately with fours wins from his last 14 mounts.

==

GULFSTREAM PARK

Race 7: #5 Ima Tornado (10-1)

Trainer Monte Thomas is 21% with first-time starters and the sire Hello Broadway is 7% first time out. In a field with plenty of first-timers, she’s worth a shot with hot apprentice Harry Hernandez aboard.
