Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, March 5

Preview: Not the number of horses we are used to seeing on a Saturday card here, but there is some quality and trainers might be pointing for next weekend’s huge card.

Race 3 – Tam

#1 Lake Drive South (9-2)

As we have said before trainer Kathleen O’Connell has had a good meet and this horse has loved this track in the past with three wins in seven tries. He’s coming off a layoff but think he can come out winging.

Race 4 — Tam

#3 Persian Poet

Trainer Horacio Barbaran and jockey Samy Camacho have hit with two $100-plus horses in recent weeks, including one on Friday. Both horses showed nothing in their PPs just like this colt and it’s probably worth $2 across the board to find out.

Race 9 – Tam

#5 Liar’s Smoker (10-1) (turf only)

This filly is coming off a win over the course for trainer Gerald Aschinger, who is 21% with grass horses. Jockey Mike Allen has won twice with this filly at the meet.

==

Race 10 – Tam

#7 Winter d’Amour (4-1)

Trainer Anthony Granitz has been 30% in the past on the Tampa main track going two turns. This filly did just that breaking her maiden in Indiana and now she gets to do it again.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Wednesday, March 2

Preview: Looks like a warm up in the weather this week. There’s a 20% chance of rain on Wednesday and Friday so it looks like good week. We all know the top jockeys on the dirt but here are some riders that have been less than 10% on the main track: Pedro Monterrey Jr. (6-83), Keiber Coa (5-89), Huber Villa-Gomez (4-83), Gary Wales (4-65), Mike Allen (3-55) and Erick Rodriguez (3-43).

Race 3 – Tam

#3 The A Plan (5-1)

This gelding is making his third race off the layoff and comes out of a key raced that has produced two winners of three starters. Also, jockey Fernando De La Cruz jumps on and he is 5-for-15 with trainer Ray Trisler at the meet.

==

Race 6 – Tam

#2 Queen Fiddle (turf only) (15-1)

Another horse running third off the layoff. Trainer Anthony Pecoraro is 36% with horses making their second start on Lasix. Also Pecoraro was 36% with stretch outs at Tampa last year.

==

Race 9 – Tam

#1 Strollingintherain (5-2)

Just throw out that last try on the turf because the mare didn’t like it. Trainer Jason DaCosta is 30% going turf to dirt and 37% going from a route to a sprint. DaCosta is 17% with jockey Fernando De La Cruz at the meet.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, Jan. 2

Preview: Plenty of horses entered on this card with a field of eight being the smallest. Watch jockey Jose Ferrer because he’s having a good meet.

 ==

Race 3: #9 Eddie G (5-1)

This gelding tried to go wire-to-wire in his comeback and faded. He should be fitter in this spot. Jockey Mike Allen is 20% with trainer Dennis Ward.

==

Race 5:  #6 Guchi Gold (8-1)

Trainer Gerald Bennett is off to a fast start at the meet with 9 wins. This mare comes out of a race that has produced three winners and jockey Daniel Centeno, who is 26% with Bennett, jumps on.

==

Race 7: #8 Morning Buzz (9-2)

This gelding drops into a maiden claimer for the first time and comes out of a Churchill race where the first two returnees have won. Trainer Ian Wilkes does well with sprinters at this track.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, Feb. 14

Race 6: #10 Heir to Glory (turf only) (4-1)

This filly has run two OK races on the turf elsewhere and after a prep on the dirt here she might be ready to go for trainer Anthony Granitz. Likes to press the pace and jockey Mike Allen will need to get her over from the outside.

==

Race 9: #5 Sonofachub (turf only) (12-1)

This 4-year-old gelding is 2-for-2 on turf but was miscast last time on dirt. Returns to favorite surface and has win over the course at this meet. The price is right with leading jockey Antonio Gallardo.
