Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, Feb. 27

Preview: They were off the turf for all but one race on Wednesday and Thursday, but hopefully it’s firm finally. Speaking of the turf, some jockeys to stay away from would be Pablo Morales (2-47), Dean Butler (1-27), Jose Garcia (1-23), Keiber Coa (0-27), Chelsy Keiser (0-26) and Huber Villa-Gomez (0-24).

Race 2: #7 Rockin Donovan (15-1)

You usually don’t see these connections of jockey Daniel Centeno and trainer Joe Woodard with horse like this on morning-line. We figure at this level if they are willing to ride/run, then we’re willing to take a shot.

==

Race 5:  #9 Bank Float (turf only) (5-2)

Jockey Daniel Centeno and trainer Arnaud Delacour have hit at 24% rate the meet and higher on the turf. This gelding’s only two wins came on grass and he had to need his last which is why he ran on the dirt.

==

Race 9: #7 Showersofblessings (turf only) (12-1)

This mare is running her third race off a layoff and trainer Michele Boyce is 30% in that situation. Jockey Fernando De la Cruz is 36% with Boyce.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Friday, Feb. 26

Preview: They were off the turf on Wednesday and all but one race on Thursday, so we’re hoping it dries out in time for today’s card. Here’s a list a trainers you might think about leaving out of your selections until they show signs of life: .Robert Boileau (2-58), Peter Wasiluk Jr. (1-71), Horacio Barbaran (1-54), Charles Harvatt (1-44), Ian Hemingway (1-43) and Hernan Parra (0-44). That’s 6-314 or 2% winners. If they beat you, they beat you.

Race 1 – Tam

#2 Holy Day (5-1)

This mare is getting a few changes in order to get back to the winner’s circle. She is returning to the dirt and trainer Rasharn Creque takes over and he is 37% the first time he starts a horse.

 ==

Race 7 – Tam

#6 Travel Required (10-1)

Trainer Michele Boyce has had a good meet (22%) and we take it as a good sign she didn’t drop this gelding in class off a pair of so-so efforts.

==

Race 9 – Tam

#4 Fiesta Rose (5-1)

Dennis Ward is another trainer with decent numbers at the meet (16%) and he drops this filly off a poor effort. She is 8-2-3-0 over this track so let’s hope of a rebound in this spot.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, Feb. 20

Nice big Saturday with 11 races and the smallest field is eight horses so there are plenty of chances for prices.

==

Race 3: #10 Skiffs Brewmeister (5-1)

This gelding has run 55 career races and never run on the main track. Trainer Kathleen O’Connell ships him up from Gulfstream Park looking to regain his confidence. She is 16% dropping a horse two or more class levels. Jockey Victor Lebron jumps on this closer.

  ==

Race 7: #5 Mister Nofty (turf only) (6-1)

It appears trainer Keith Nation has been looking to go two turns with this son of Scat Daddy all along. Offspring of Scat Daddy with 15% of the time first effort on the grass and Nation is 18% first on turf. He gets leading rider Antonio Gallardo aboard.

==

Race 10: #4 Nate the Natural (turf only) (8-1)

This gelding has a pair of third on this turf course and gets a huge jockey upgrade to Daniel Centeno, who has been hot the last three weeks. Trainer Michele Boyce is winning 23% of her races here this winter and has this one spotted well.

FAIRGROUNDS

Race 11 (Grade II Risen Star Stakes: 1.#4 Bistraya (15-1), 2. #10 Airoforce (5-2), 3. #13 Candy My Boy (15-1), 4. #6 Gun Runner (6-1). LONG SHOT: #7 Its All Relevent (15-1).

It’s time for the 50-point races on the Kentucky Derby trail so a win in any of these races pretty much gets you in the starting gate on the first Saturday of May. We’re going with an upset here as Bistraya ships in off a maiden victory in Southern California. Jockey Edwin Maldonado comes along for the ride. Candy My Boy is interesting but that post is a killer.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Friday, Feb. 5

==

Race 6: #3 Queen Fiddle (turf only) (6-1)

This filly’s best race was on the turf and she returns to the green here for trainer Anthony Pecoraro, who is 30% with first-time Lasix. She’s a prep so expect a big effort with Ramon Feliciano aboard.

==

Race 8:  #9 Travel Required (15-1)

This gelding is still looking for his first win on the turf, but he takes a drop in class into a straight claimer and gets jockey Manoel Cruz for trainer Michele Boyce.

==

Race 9:  #3 Good Times Rambles (5-1)

This gelding has loved Tampa this winter, winning twice on the class rise. He moves up again as trainer Benny Feliciano claimed out of his last win and Feliciano is 4-for-8 first off the claim.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Friday, Jan. 8

Preview: Seems like a pretty good card and one that could produce some prices. Watch out for trainer GR Trisler who has won four winners over the last three programs with jockeys Fernando De La Cruz, Scott Spieth and Huber Villa Gomez.

==

Race 6: #10 Benne First Baby (8-1)

Jockey Scott Spieth and trainer Aldana Gonzalez have been a hot combination lately. Gonzalez is 22% when running a horse first off the claim.

==

Race 7:  #3 Travel Required (6-1) ***

Horses from Chicago have done well at the meet like this gelding. Trainer Michele Boyce has two wins at the meet already and her 6-year-old has won here in the past. Plus the gelding is coming out of a key race that has produced two winners.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Friday, Jan. 1

Preview: Hope someone out there took our advice on jockey Scott Speith, who scored with a $100 plus horse for trainer Dennis Ward on Wednesday.

 ==

Race 7: #6 Gimme a Double (10-1)

Trainer Darien Rodriguez is 40% second off the layoff. This gelding pressed the pace first time out and faded. Look for an improved effort here with jockey Pablo Morales, who is 23% with Rodriguez.

==

Race 10: #6 Ruffolo (4-1)

Trainer Michele Boyce is taking her time with her horses from Arlington Park. This gelding finished second at AP on the turf and looks well spotted here. Jockey Fernando De La Cruz is 3-for-9 with Boyce.

Race 5: #8 Harumi (5-2)

Trainer Efren Loza. Jr. has hit with 48% of his first-time starters and we’ll continue to ride that trend with leading jockey Antonio Gallardo in the saddle. The sire Ashoka wins with 14% of his first-timers.

==

Race 6: #4 Ruffolo (7-2)

Strictly a pedigree play here as City Zip is 15% with his first-timers. Trainer Michele Boyce isn’t great with first starts but this one does have a bullet work recently. Might be real deal.
