Doug O’Neill has been the hottest trainer on the grounds the last week and he drops this gelding down to the $8K level. O’Neill is 35% when he moves a horse down two or more class levels. This 4-year-old was favored last time out but encountered all kinds of trouble coming out of the gate.

This 2-year-old showed speed against tougher in his debut at Santa Anita. Trainer Mike Puype puts blinkers on and the gelding has been working well likely with the new equipment. On top of that Puype is 71% when dropping a horse two or more levels.

Here’s that man again, trainer Doug O’Neill. This gelding won last time going down the hill at Santa Anita and he finished second on this turf course last year in a graded stakes. O’Neill is 23% second off a layoff of 180 days or more and he gets a top turf jockey in Corey Nakatani to ride.

Trainer Phil Serpe ships this filly down from New Jersey off a two-race winning streak. She comes out of a key race and Serpe is 50% (4-for-8) with horses looking to repeat a claiming victory.

Race 7: #10 Havermeyer Street (4-1)

Trainer Michael Petro is 20% on the turf and this 3-year-old just missed last time out and that race has proven to be a key race. Jockey Edgard Zayas takes over and he’s 32% with Petro.

Santa Anita early opinions for Thursday, Oct. 15 (Plus Gulfstream Park West)

Race 5: #3 Bijoux (9-2)

Trainer John Sadler is 7-for-12 when dropping a horse from the MSW ranks to a maiden claimer for the first time. This 4-year-old has been away for more than a year but Sadler wouldn’t run her here if she wasn’t ready.

Race 8: #12 Kiana’s Dream (6-1)

Trainer Ricky Agarie drops this 3-year-old to her lowest level ever and if she runs back to her September race at Del Mar, she will win this race. Good gate rider Edwin Maldonado takes over so look for better speed than her last.

Gulfstream Park West

Race 7: #7 Street Rage (5-1)

This 3-year-old moved up in class and fell flat on his face, but trainer Michael Petro brings him back at the same level looking for improvement. Petro is 37% with beaten favorites and jockey Edgard Zayas stays aboard and he is 18% with Petro.

Race 9: #3 Bon Accord (4-1)

This 4-year-old is moving up in class off a wire-to-wire victory at GP. In his one try at GPW, he was a winner and trainer Gilberto Zerpa is 41% with horses off a win in the claiming ranks.

Los Alamitos (plus a few others) opinions for Thursday, July 9

Race 3: #5 Myrna Lou (8-1)

Has a good second over the track last year and has good speed. Has a good work over the track. Trainer Molly Pearson is 29% with beaten favorites and regular jockey Scott Stevens is in from Turf Paradise to ride. He is 33% with Pearson.

Race 6: #8 Changing Karma (8-1)

This gelding has been competitive on the main circuit and had a good second over this track in December. Trainer Tom Bazley has good numbers all the way around led by 55% with horses coming off a 31 to 60-day layoff.

BELMONT PARK

Race 3: #8 Ask the Lonely (5-1)

Trainer Michelle Nevin starts this 2-year-old filly by Congrats, who is 12% with first-timers. The dam has dropped five winners, including two stakes winners. Nevin is 11% with debuting MSW types and jockey Jose Ortiz is 7 for his last 23 rides.

Race 5: #1 Baby B (12-1)

This filly hasn’t had munch success on the turf so it’s time to go back to the dirt, where she finished third in her only try. Trainer Richard Schosberg is 30% going turf to dirt. She is also dropping to a career low in claiming ranks and hopefully hot jockey Jose Ortiz will put her on the lead with her speed.

GULFSTREAM PARK

Race 4: #5 Hard to Picture (3-1)

Trainer Michael Petro, who has a lot of horses for owner Frank Calabrese, is 6-for-9 with horse making their second start on the turf. The daughter of Hard Spun finished fourth in her debut at Churchill Downs. Apprentice jockey Tyler Gaffalione (38% with Petro) takes the mount.

Race 5: #5 R Quick Temper (5-1)

Don’t be fooled by the trainer’s name on this 2-year-old filly. Sally Mitchelhill is the listed trainer, but this horse is really trained by Kirk Ziadie, who hasn’t had his license renewed by the state. The daughter Elusive Quality has some good works over at Calder the sire is 13% with firsters.
