Jeff Nahill’s Los Alamitos RC opinions for Thursday, July 2

Los Alamitos RC opinions for Sunday, Dec. 18 (closing day)

The final day of the short meet and then Southern California will take a break until Santa Anita on Dec. 26. Both the jockey and trainer titles are up for grabs heading into the weekend. I’ve stunk up the joint the last few days. Here’s hoping for a few winners.

Race 4: #6 Johann’s Command (3-1)
This gelding has been knocking on the door and has a third over this track. Has plenty of early speed and this might be graduation day.

Race 5: #3 Reinahermosa (10-1)
This filly has a 8-0-2-2 record over this service and she gets the king of the long shots at this meet in jockey Agapito Delgadillo, who scored with a pair of 30-1 long shots this week. This filly is taking a class drop.

Race 9: #12 Kimbear (8-1)
This colt seems to hold a class edge, but he is running for the first time on the dirt after three runs on the grass. Trainer Eric Kruljac is 22% going from route to sprint and Joe Talamo takes over.

Los Alamitos RC (plus Tampa) opinions for Friday, Dec. 16

Race 3: #5 Lovely Raquel (6-1)
Trainer Victor Garcia is 38% the first time he sends a horse around two turns. This filly has a bullet work coming in and jockey Agapito Delgadillo is 2-for-3 at LRC with Garcia.

Race 4: #3 Avicii (2-1) BEST BET
This mare finished second over this track in Septemeber and no doubt that was the reason trainer Robertino Diodoro (25% first off the claim) claimed her last time out. Diodoro is 27% second off the layoff and Joe Talamo rides.

Race 5: #6 Private Terrace (12-1)
This filly is 2-for-3 over this track and drops into a claimer. Jockey Tiago Pereira keeps the mount. Throw out the last race and look for a big rebound.

Race 7: #3 Atascaderan (7-2)
This gelding as always enjoyed this track with a 13-3-0-2 record, which is probably the reason trainer Mark Glatt claimed at Del Mar. Glatt is 26% first off the claim.

Tampa Bay Downs

Preview: There were nine races on Wednesday and nine different winning trainers, including the red-hot Gerald Bennett. On the riding side, leader Daniel Centeno got two at short prices and Orlando Bocachica also scored twice.

Race 4: #8 Outside In (20-1) (turf only)
The agent for jockey Daniel Centeno must have been sold a story on this long shot and you know we like big jockeys riding for small-time outfirts like trainer David Hinsley. This gelding had his prep on the grass and could be ready to go here.

Race 5: #12 Reverse Commute (9-2)
Don’t see a whole lot that scares me from taking this first-timer from the Kathleen O’Connell barn. O’Connell is 17% with first-timers and 17% with debuting maiden claimers. Jockey Ronnie Allen Jr. is 20% with O’Connell.

Race 6: #9 Mach Trial (10-1) (turf only)
Horses shipping in from Delaware have done well at the meet. This gelding almost won at this condition and on the grass here in April. Joe Arboritanza is 12% with turf horses and 10% with horses off a 46- to 90-day layoffs. Jockey Willie Martinez is 30% with the trainer.

Race 9: #10 Abruzzi’s Star (6-1) (turf only)
This 2-year-old broke his maiden going long on the turf at The Meadowlands. Trainer Anthony Pecoraro is 42% horses using Lasix a second time. Up and coming jockey Angel Cruz must carve out a win from the outside post.

Los Alamitos Race Course for Thursday, Dec. 15

Preview: Not the best of cards with three maiden claiming events but that’s what you get this time of the year with no grass racing. New jockey alert: Luis Contreras, who once upon a time rode in Southern California, is back from Woodbine, where he finished second in the riding standings to Patrick Husbands. Don’t know if he’s staying for the winter or on a busman’s holiday. The bombs have been flying the first week of the meet so we will see what happens this week.

Race 1: #4 Holidayincambodia (6-1)
I know friend Terry Turrell had this horse down last week before he was scratched (the horse not Terry). This filly won at this distance over the track in September and gets similar conditions here.

Race 5: #10 Love Winning (20-1)
We’ve all seen the bombs going off in the first week of the meet so why not take a shot here? This filly is going two turns for the first time and is coming out of a key race that has produced three next out winners. Trainer Vann Belvoir puts blinkers on today.

Race 7: #6 Where Y’at Joe Joe (6-1)
Trainer Dean Pederson is 25% first off the claim and 23% with horses second off the layoff. There is a good work showing after the claim and Jamie Theriot keeps the mount.

Los Alamitos RC opinions for Sunday, Sept. 25

Preview: Final day of the meet as Santa Anita returns next weekend and that means the return of grass racing on the new turf course. Look for big fields next week as jockeys like Rafael Bejarano and Flavien Prat return from freshenings.

Race 3: #2 Oleanderpolarbear (15-1)
Had all kinds of trouble in his last effort over this track. Throw it out. This filly has two wins over this oval and trainer Jose Moreno is 36% second off the layoff.

Race 5: #3 Holograeme (3-1)
This filly has been running of the turf for Phil D’Amato but her record on the dirt here are 2-1-1-0. D’Amato is 26% third off the layoff and Santiago Gonzalez rides.

Race 6: #4 Quorum of Joy (4-1)
This gelding just lost by a nose at a lower level in a huge effort. That effort has produced two winners next time out.

Race 9: #10 Silver Chrome (6-1)
Jockey Chantal Sutherland has had a big meet and has been a go-to rider for trainer Vann Belvoir. This gelding is cutting back from two turns and should be plenty fit. He has some tactical speed and will have to use that from the outside post.

Race 7: 1. #8 Edge of Reality, 2. #2 Bern’ James Bern, 3. #3 Granny’s Kitten. LONG SHOT: #1a Forward Thinker.

Race 8: 1. #7 Tale of Life, 2. #3 Bodhisattva, 3. #4 Res Judicata. LONG SHOT: #1 Cyrus Alexander.

Race 9: 1. #11 Who’s Out, 2. #2 Mind Your Biscuits, 3. #5 Noholdingback Bear. LONG SHOT: #4 Navy Hymn.

Race 10: 1. #5 Songbird, 2. #4 Land Over Sea, 3. #2 Cathryn Sophia. LONG SHOT: #1 Carina Mia.

Race 11: 1. #9 Nyquist, 2. #4 Connect, 3. #2 Exaggerator, 4. #7 Gun Runner. LONG SHOT: #12 Hit It Once More.

LOS ALAMITOS

Race 1: #3 Atascaderan (6-1): This gelding has scored three times over this track and has been in the money 5-of-12 times over this oval. Felipe Martinez keeps the mount off a fourth place finish.

Race 3: #3 Nothin But a Smile (3-1): We are going with the process of elimination in this maiden race as trainers Marty Jones and Cliff Sise win 3% of the time first out. Meanwhile, trainer Phil D’Amato wins 16% of the time first out and the sire Grazen wins 18% first time. Here’s hope this filly is ready to go.

Race 9: #7 Star Express (3-1): This gelding has two runner-up finishes in three tries over this track and trainer Gary Sherlock stretches him out as Tyler Baze keeps the mount today

Los Alamitos RC opinions for Friday, Sept. 23

Preview: Some trainers have been struggling during the first two weeks of the meet and they will either get hot or continue to have problems. You make up your mind. The trainers struggling are Bobby Wayne Grayson 0-for-10, Mike Harrington 0-12, Doug O’Neill 1-12 and Peter Eurton 1-14.

Race 3: #1 Tooluckysupermoon (2-1)
This mare showed speed at Del Mar and finished fourth. Trainer Jorge Periban drops her a level and she has a third over the track in the past. Jockey Martin Pedroza keeps the mount. She is also coming out of race where the first two starters have won next time out.

Race 7: #2 Red Apple (10-1)
Throw out that last race against winners. This filly had trouble and just did no running. Trainer Juan Lopez puts apprentice E.Orozco on board and I look for this 2-year-old to show speed from the gate.

Race 8: #6 Runbrorun (2-1)
Jockey Iggy Puglisi and trainer Paul Aguirre team up here and they are 24% together at Los Alamitos the last two years and for whatever reason it seems to happen a lot in the last race of the day. Aguirre is 23% with horses on their third race off the layoff.

Los Alamitos RC opinions for Thursday, Sept. 22

Preview: Final week of the meet before the circuit returns to Santa Anita. So far a few jockeys have been struggling with the Los Al track. Brayan Pena is 1-for-18, Alonso Quinonez is 1-17, Chad Lindsay 1-16 and Vinnie Bednar is 0-12. Bednar is surprising since he rides at night, too, but the configuration is different.

Race 1: #2 Sooner Time (5-1)
Trainer Vladimir Cerin has two fillies in this race, but we’ll go with the one moving up in class and has a couple of big works coming into this sprint. Cerin is 20% with horses off a 31 to 60-day layoff.

Race 4: #6 Bohemian Bliss (3-1)
Trainer Mike Puype had a miserable Del Mar, but has spotted his horses well here winning two of three races. This filly has speed in her first try over this oval and Tyler Baze keeps the mount.

Race 8: #9 Deer Decarchy (4-1)
Jockey Iggy Puglisi is underrated and if there is a bias in the track he will find it. He put this one on the lead 2 weeks ago but couldn’t get him home so trainer Wilton Whitehouse drops the 5-year-old in class.

Los Alamitos RC for Sunday, Sept. 18 (Plus Golden Gate)

Preview: Jockey Stewart Elliott hit the wall after nine winners the first week as he was shut out the first two days of this week. Jockey Kent Desormeaux showed up on Friday and won his first race. Fernando Perez and Tiago Periera after having good meets.

Race 1: #4 He’s a Dandy (4-1)
Our Eyes: Trainer Wilton Whitehouse hit with a Northern California Fair bomber earlier this week and he has this gelding ready to run here. Felipe Martinez takes the mount and the 8-year-old has a good work over the track. Whitehouse is 22% with shippers.

Race 4: #6 Shakeitupbetty (3-1)
Trainer Dean Pederson claimed this mare at Del Mar and drops her a level. He no doubt got her for this spot as she is 1-for-1 over the track. Pederson is 22% first off the claim and Abel Lezcano keeps the mount.

Race 7: #2 Sidepocket Run (5-2)
This mare won at this level at Santa Anita and trainer Phil D’Amato drops her from an open race back in with Cal-breds today. The 7-year-old is 5-2-0-2 at this distance and jockey Martin Garcia, who is 21% with D’Amato, takes over.

GOLDEN GATE

Race 1: #4 Ain’t No Other (5-1)
Trainer Tim McCanna brought this gelding to Del Mar, lost him via a claim and re-claimed him back to bring him back to his favorite track. This 8-year-old 11-5-3-1 at GG and 16-5-5-4 on synthetic tracks. McCann is 24% first off the claim and 20% with jickey Ricardo Gonzalez.

Race 3: #3 Mizzen Me (6-1)
Tough to explain the last race other than he lost to a Bob Baffert good thing. Now Keith Desormeaux ships him north to try turf for the first time. The sire Mizzen Mast gets 11% first out winners on grass.

Race 7: #1 Terrys Tom Cat (4-1)
Does this sound familiar? Trainer Tim McCanna brought this gelding to Del Mar, lost him via the claim box and re-claimed him. He cuts him back in distance and jockey Frank Alvarado, who is 23% with McCanna, jumps on.

Los Alamitos RC opinions for Saturday, Sept. 17 (Plus Golden Gate)

Preview: Speed wasn’t as good on Thursday’s card as it was the first week of the meet. It might have been the horses running or a change in the dirt surface so make sure you look at Friday’s charts and the first race or two today.

Race 1: #3 Runaway Wildcat (10-1): This gelding has a 4-1-1-1 record over this track and has been given a break since early August. Trainer Lorenzo Ruiz is 27% on dirt and the same percentage with jockey Vinny Bednar, who regularly rides Los Al at night.

Race 3: #5 Coyote Fly (2-1): This colt is 2-for-2 over the Los Al surface and no doubt got claimed at Del Mar to run here.

Race 5: #9 Lofty Cause (4-1): Trainer Mike Harrington trains year round at Los Al and points for this meet. This 2-year-old showed good improvement off a layoff and could be ready for the cap and gown today.

Race 6: #6 Dr. Go (7-2): Another Mike Harrington horse. Gets a big jock switch to Fernando Perez and has a win over the track.

Race 7: #6 Mysterious Miracle (6-1): If you throw out that last race when she got squeezed at the break, this filly looks pretty good at a price for trainer Phil D’Amato. Stewart Elliott takes over and he was on fire the first week of the meet.

Race 9: #5 Hennythelovepenny (8-1): This filly has a 4-1-0-1 record over this track and Bill Spawr drops her into a starter allowance, a condition her win at this track was in. Tyler Baze jumps on and he is 17% with Spawr.

GOLDEN GATE

Race 5: #2 Adler (7-2): Trainer Eddie Truman ships up to GG and he’s 43% with shippers. This filly was sired by Unusual Heat and bred to love the turf. Truman is 2-for-4 with horses with two sprints into a route race.

Race 7: #5 Swiss Minister (5-1): Ships up from SoCal after being claimed two back by Tim McCanna, who is 39% second off the claim. McCanna is 33% in turf sprints.
