Horse racing, Santa Anita

Santa Anita opinions for Saturday, Dec. 26

Preview: Nothing better the day after Christmas than Santa Anita, Fast horses and free calendars. Remember some out-of-town jockeys and trainers are in for the four graded stakes on the schedule so don’t overlook them. Also, remember jockey Flavien Prat is back riding after a serious injury suffered in September. Hope he returns to the form he showed earlier in the year.

Race 1: #3 Airfoil (3-1)

Trainer Jonathan Wong claimed this gelding at Del Mar and freshened him up. Wong is 17% first off the claim, 46% with horses on dirt and jockey Santiago Gonzalez, who won the riding title at Los Alamitos, jumps on.

Race 3: #1 Escapee (5-1)

Despite this filly’s breeding (Street Sense sire out of an Empire Maker mare) she hasn’t liked going long but trainer Bob Baffert is 37% with horses going from a route to sprint and he puts blinkers on for this.

Race 4: #7 Alert Bay (turf only) (5-1)

Interesting choice of races for this win machine (11 of 21 lifetime) as he has won 4 of 5 times on this Santa Anita turf course but never down the hill. Trainer Blaine Wright is 21% on the turf and 21% in sprints.

Race 6: #6 Mister Brightside (turf only) (4-1)

Trainer Jeremy Noseda didn’t like the ride on this 3-year-old in the Hollywood Derby at Del Mar and now the son of Lord Shanakill is in the Paddy Gallagher barn and Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith takes over. He’s 27% with Gallagher.
