The news has been out there for most of the month, but Del Mar’s fan forum is closing in the near future, according to Craig Dado, senior vice president/marketing.
“It has been waning for some time,” said Dado on Thursday. “The explosion of social media gives people other places to hold discussions.”
Mary Shepardson, Del Mar’s director of publications and the site’s administrator, is retiring at the end of the year, said Dado, but she will remain as a “seasonal” employee much like Dan Smith does in the publicity department.
Dado said there just wasn’t much interest in the site and it was time to “it let go.”
The site was often controversial and there certainly were some petty issues among participants, but I believe it’s something of value.
Now granted that value has diminished since Del Mar shut it down for a while a few years back due to some litigation regarding charges of slander/libel. Much to the consternation of some DMTC higher ups, Del Mar added some new software and re-opened. The site was never the same.
I will admit I participated before that time, but kept it to a minimum because I felt as a member of the media (North County Times) I didn’t want to be the story. Since the new forum, I don’t even know if I have a log in and password.
It’s too bad, but I guess a sign of the times.
Del Mar fan forum, RIP.
And Mary, get some well deserved R&R.
