Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, Jan. 9

Race 5: #3 Schoolofhardknocks (6-1)

Once upon a time, this gelding was thought to be something in Southern California. Didn’t quite live up to the hyp and now is in the Brian Lynch barn. Lynch usually runs at Gulfstream Park, but when he ships to Tampa he means business. Nice inside draw for this 5-year-old and jockey Angel Serpa rides.

Race 9: #10 Supreme Justice (10-1)

Trainer G. Ray Trisler has four wins in the last two weeks and is hitting 33% for the meet. This gelding looks to continue the hot streak as he drops in class and comes out of key race that has produced two winners so far.

Race 10: #9 Cee ‘n O (4-1)

This 5-year-old runs for the hottest jockey-trainer combo in Antonio Gallardo and Jamie Ness. The gelding is also coming out of a Laurel race that has produced two next out winners and he has a good work over the track.

FIRST RACE: 1. Skelton Pass, 2. Dream Team, 3. Colonial Power. LONG SHOT: Paiasolo.

SECOND RACE: 1. Ranulf, 2. Life Is a Joy, 3. Sea Preacher. LONG SHOT: Biltmore Boogie.

THIRD RACE: 1. #2 Another House (4-1), 2. Dylan Ward, 3. Blue Law. LONG SHOT: Chromium.

This 3-year-old got quite an education in his debut at Laurel. He ran into trouble and finished fifth for trainer Tom Proctor. Gary Stevens takes over so look for a big improvement.

FOURTH RACE: 1. Kobe’s Back, 2. Appealing Tale, 3. Wild Dude. LONG SHOT: Turnover.

FIFTH RACE: 1. #4 Henry’s Holiday (10-1), 2. Got Even, 3. Perfect Set. LONG SHOT: Tribal Jewel.

Finished second and was claimed by Ted West, who is 29% first off the claim. Tries two turns for the first time and should enjoy it being sired by Harlan’s Holiday. West is 2-for-3 with horses going sprint-sprint-route. Jockey Tyler Baze jumps on and he’s 24% with West.

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Fabulous Lady, 2. Tiz a Tommy Town, 3. Annie’s Curls. LONG SHOT: Casino Call.

EIGHT RACE: 1. #9 Danas Best (10-1), 2. Big John B, 3. Ashleyluvssugar. LONG SHOT: Power Ped.

Was fifth horse on the wire in his U.S. debut and now jumps into graded stakes company. Trainer Phil D’Amato is 20% second off the layoff and Joel Rosario jumps on.

NINTH RACE: 1. #5 Red Vine (6-1) BEST BET, 2. Bayern, 3. Beholder. LONG SHOT: Imperative.

This 5-year-old has three wins and a second on the main track since leaving the grass. Owned by Jon and Sarah Kelly of Rancho Santa Fe so a win at their home track would be huge. Jockey Joel Rosario comes West to ride for Christophe Clement and they are 22% together. I couldn’t talk you off almost any horse in this race. It’s tough. It’s put up or shut up time for Bayern. Would love to see Beholder win, but just not sure about the distance despite fabulous workouts. Imperative is training well as is invader Class Leader.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Wednesday, Dec. 10

Thought we’d try and have some fun at another track this winter so we’re giving Tampa Bay Downs a whirl to see how it goes.

Of course, Gulfstream has the best racing in Florida in the winter, but you will see top trainer like Bill Mott ship in to Tampa with lesser stock or an easier spot for a horse.

Of people on the West Coast, trainer Tom Proctor and Eoin Harty both have strings at Tampa and you will see some of these horses in Southern California down the line.

The meet is  just underway but as we’ve noted in our picks Gulfstream West and Keeneland have proven to provide the most winners so far. Laurel Race Course and Thistledown have produced three winners while Gulfstream Park, Delaware Park and Hawthorne have produced to winners each. In the past, horses shipping in from Indiana Downs have done well in Tampa, but that hasn’t been try so far this meet. Keep an eye on it.

Race 6: #7 Magic Luck (6-1)

Trainer Jason DaCosta is 32% shipping horses and turf to dirt. This 3-year-old gelding has won over the track before and ships in from Gulfstream West (aka Calder), which has produced the most winners at the meet so far (nine).

Race 9: #1 Fine Candy (6-1)

Trainer Tom Proctor drops this 3-year-old filly into a maiden claimer for the first time and he is 20% with that move. She is bred to go long and coming out of a race a Keeneland, The track has produced six winners so far at Tampa Bay Downs. She also has a decent work last week.
