Santa Anita (plus a few others) opinions for Sunday, June 14

Race 5: #5 Silver Spirit (5-1)

This 4-year-old has made all of his career starts on the grass and now trainer Julio Canani decides it’s time to try the dirt. Canani puts the blinkers back on, a move he is 43% with. There is a good work over the track, probably with the blinkers back on. Jockey Alex Solis rides.

==

Race 7: #3 Clever Royal (turf only)

Trainer Eddie Truman is having one of the best meets of his career and he has been unconscious with horses coming down the hill. This colt won his first race on that course in his last and figures to only improve as Truman is 36% third off the layoff.

==

Race 9: #9 True Image (turf only) (4-1)

Our Eyes:  This gelding showed big improvement when put on the turf last time, losing by just two lengths down the hill. The 3-year-old tries the downhill again and Flavien Prat will know this presser better for trainer Mike Machowsky.

==

BELMONT PARK

Race 8: #8 My Year Is a Day (turf only) (6-1)

This filly was thought to be hot stuff when she ran in the Edgewood at Churchill as she was bet down to 2-1, but she fought her rider. She’s had a month between races and maybe trainer Graham Motion has gotten her to settle down.

==

GULFSTREAM PARK

Race 6: #8 Mischievevouscharlie (10-1)

This 3-year-old filly ran her best career race two back sprinting on the main track. Trainer James McMullen goes back to the well here as a sends her route-to-sprint, a move he is 35% with and she has a decent work coming into the race.

==

Race 8: #9 Biggest Drama (5-1)

This 2-year-old colt comes out of a maiden race where the first two horses to run have won so we’re hoping for 3-for-3.

Santa Anita opinions for Saturday, May 23

Race 5: #2 Maximinus (4-1)

Jockey Flavin Prat had is choice of horses in this race and picks this 4-year-old. The gelding pressed the pace in his last at this level but steadied at the top of the stretch.

==

Race 8: #9 Rocko’s Wheel (6-1)

This 3-year-old makes his debut on the turf. Trainer Phil D’Amato is 26% first-time turf and the sire Grazen is 30% first-time on the green. Jockey Joe Talamo keeps the ride.

==

Race 9: #3 Magic Mark (10-1)

Trainer Ron Ellis is 38% in non-graded stakes so he’s worth a look in this spot.

==

Race 10: #1 Silver Spirit (8-1)

The son of Tapit closed some ground last time, but trainer Julio Canani, who is 34% third off the layoff, shortens him up to a mile. Jockey Alex Solis had a trouble trip last time and needs to avoid trouble from the rail here.

Santa Anita opinions for Saturday, May 9

Race 2: #9 Explicable (6-1)

This 4-year-old filly has been favored in all three of her career starts but she gets on a surface she was truly bred for running on the down hill turf course. Pioneerof the Nile is 17% first-time turf and jockey Mike Smith takes over in the saddle.

==

Race 6: #3 Gangnam Guy (8-1)

Trainer Julio Canani is 45% with horses second off the claim and that’s what we have here with this 4-year-old gelding, who showed speed in his last race on the grass. Canani switches to the dirt looking for some magic.

==

Race 9: #10 Sure Victory (3-1)

This 4-year-old colt hasn’t raced in nearly two years, but they thought enough of him to bring him back. Trainer Phil D’Amato is 32% with horses off layoffs of more than 180 days and 43% with horses going into a maiden claimer for the first time. The colt also comes out of a key race.

Santa Anita selections for Friday, Sept. 26

Just a reminder that Santa Anita has put in a new main dirt track during its break from racing. It’s possible the speed biases might be a thing of the past, but who knows until they race. In listening to some early comments from exercise riders, word is the track is deeper and you don’t hear the horses, but like we said: we’ll see.

Trainer Julio Canani was as hot as anyone at the end of the Del Mar meet. He claimed CONTRIBUTOR (8-1), a 3-year-old gelding, away from Glen Hill Farm and throw out that last race and this son of Repriced should be right there with jockey Joe Talamo aboard.

Wednesday not so good. As I told someone earlier in the day, tough races to handicap and has carryover all over it.

That’s about the only thing I was right about. There will be a Pick 6 carryover of more than $67,000 heading into Thursday’s program, which again looks very tough.
