Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Wednesday, April 27

Preview: It’s a 10-race card, but not an overabundance of horses. Rain was forecast on Monday so we’ll have to see if they stay on the turf. Trainer Dennis Ward won twice on Sunday and so did leading jockey Antonio Gallardo.

 

Race 3 – Tam

#4 Stately Defence (5-1): This mare has been claimed in two of her last three races. John Rigattieri gives her a try and he is 32% first off the claim. He gets jockey Daniel Centeno to ride and they are 26% over the last year.

                              

Race 5 – Tam

#2 Dramatic Entry (12-1): Trainer John Vinson is 40% when taking a horse from the turf to the dirt like this gelding. He is also dropping him in class plus jockey Manoel Cruz jumps on and they are 2-for-8 at the meet.

 

Race 6 – Tam

#2 Mini Channel (turf only) (5-2): Trainer Arnaud Delacour showed speed last time in a MSW and now drops into a maiden claimer for the first time. Big jockey switch to Daniel Centeno, who has ridden 30% winners for this barn this meet.

 

Race 10 – Tam

#5 Gold Value (10-1): Trainer Joseph Arboritanza is a master with cutbacks and moves this filly goes from a route to a sprint. Jockey Willie Martinez has his only two wins at the meet for Arboritanza.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Wednesday, March 11

Race 6: #3 Shaikha (5-2)

This 5-year-old mare broke her maiden on the dirt last time, but has been a turf horse to that point. She returns to the turf for trainer John Rigattieri and jockey Dyn Panell, who are a 23% combination.

Race 7: #5 Ghost Hunter (5-2)

This gelding loves this track with two wins and a second in three tries over it. Trainer Jamie Ness stretches him back out and leading jockey Antonio Gallardo stays aboard.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Friday, Feb. 6

Race 4: #4 Hank’ster (4-1)

Trainer Jason Da Costa is 28% at the meet and he decides to put blinkers on this son of Wildcat Heir, who finished sixth in this debut. Da Costa and jockey Fernando De la Cruz are looking for more speed as this 3-year-old drops his claiming price in half ($50,000 to $25,000).

Race 9: #1 Shaikha (turf only) (8-5)

This 5-year-old mare has been facing way tougher in New York and before that at Gulfstream Park. She has 7 runner-up finishes in 16 lifetime starts and might finally have found a class level she can win at. She has tactical speed and jockey Dyn Panell is 24% with trainer John Rigattieri.

Race 4: #6 Don’t Quit Dreaming (6-1)

This 4-year-old gelding shipped down to Gulfstream and found the competition too tough. He returns to Tampa for the potent team of trainer Jamie Ness and jockey Antonio Gallardo. He has speed and might go wire-to-wire.

Race 6: #5 Thealkascraftygirl (5-1)

A first-time starter from the John Rigattieri barn, which is 18% with first-timers and 20% with firsters in a maiden claimer. The sire Majesticperfection is 18% with first-timers.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Friday, Dec. 26

Race 1: #8 Lightning Quick (9-2)

Trainer Kathleen O’Connell has gotten off to a fast start at the meet, mainly with horses shipping in from Gulfstream West. This 2-year-old filly should relish the extra distance, being by Thunder Gulch and O’Cpnnell is 21% with second-time starters.

Race 4: #5 Divining Rod (7-2)

Trainer Arnaud Delacour tried to get this son of Tapit on the grass in his debut, but it got taken off the turf and he won anyway at Laurel. So now he tries to get on the turf again and Delacour is 29% with horses that won their last race.

Race 9: #1 Ward Three Art G (5-1)

Trainer John Rigattieri has shipped down from Suffolk Downs and put up three wins already. This 3-year-old gelding had trouble at the start in his last race and come out of a key race. Jockey Dyn Panell knows this horse well, having won three times on him.
