Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Sunday, Feb. 28

Preview: Mediocre card due to the five-day racing weeks. Jockeys Dean Butler and Daniel Centeno won twice on Friday’s card and might be hitting a hot spell. Centeno came back to win twice on Saturday, but leading rider Antonio Gallardo at the natural hat trick.

Race 1 – Tam

#4 Vita Desiderata (7-2)

This old boy might have gotten fit over the Turfway Park oval and shipped down to cash. He has two big works over the Tampa track for trainer Joe Woodard, who employs Daniel Centeno. They are a 20% combination at the meet.

==

Race 5: #1 Swagbag (8-1)

This gelding is shipping up from Gulfstream Park after showing a bit of speed in his last race. Since that race two of the next three horses to run have come back winners so looks like a key race.

Race 10 – Tam

#5 Pidgeon (2-1) BEST BET

Trainer Larry Rivelli is 30% with horses going a route of ground for the first time. On top of that this is a daughter of City Zip, which produces plenty of turf winners. Jockey Daniel Centeno, who is 38% with Rivelli, stays aboard.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, Feb. 27

Preview: They were off the turf for all but one race on Wednesday and Thursday, but hopefully it’s firm finally. Speaking of the turf, some jockeys to stay away from would be Pablo Morales (2-47), Dean Butler (1-27), Jose Garcia (1-23), Keiber Coa (0-27), Chelsy Keiser (0-26) and Huber Villa-Gomez (0-24).

==

Race 2: #7 Rockin Donovan (15-1)

You usually don’t see these connections of jockey Daniel Centeno and trainer Joe Woodard with horse like this on morning-line. We figure at this level if they are willing to ride/run, then we’re willing to take a shot.

==

Race 5:  #9 Bank Float (turf only) (5-2)

Jockey Daniel Centeno and trainer Arnaud Delacour have hit at 24% rate the meet and higher on the turf. This gelding’s only two wins came on grass and he had to need his last which is why he ran on the dirt.

==

Race 9: #7 Showersofblessings (turf only) (12-1)

This mare is running her third race off a layoff and trainer Michele Boyce is 30% in that situation. Jockey Fernando De la Cruz is 36% with Boyce.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Sunday, Feb. 21

Preview: Not a bad card. The smallest field is in the first with just seven horses. Trainer Tom Proctor has won 3 of his last 9 starters while his usual jockey Brian Pedroza is 3 for his last 10 starts. Big long shots on Friday’s card. Let’s hope it continues.

==

Race 1: #6 Misty Steps (15-1)

 Trainer Anthony Granitz has done well here in the last in dirt route races. This filly is trying two turns for the first time in a long time, but Granitz is 14% going sprint to route. This 4-year-old has Brisnet’s best late pace rating.

==

Race 6: #2 Glencoe Girl (turf only) (12-1)

Trainer Graham Motion tried to get this filly on the turf first time out but it was taken off and she still finished third on the dirt. The race is under her belt and now Motion adds Lasix and he’s 23% first time Lasix. The sire Giant’s Causeway is 9% first time turf.

==

Race 7: #4 Jersey Blue Giant (6-1)

This gelding has won 5 of 7 on the main tack here. Trainer Joe Woodard is 25% third off the layoff and jockey Angel Serpa keeps the mount.

==

Race 8: #6 Captain Kitten (turf only) (12-1)

This 3-year-old broke his maiden at first asking on the turf at Delaware Park. Trainer Steve Epley Jr. brings him down for his first start of 2016 and he is 27% with horses off a 90-plus day layoff and he gets good turf jockey Daniel Centeno.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Friday, Jan. 29

Preview: Rains hit again Wednesday forcing races off the turf. With Thursday a day off, hopefully the turf course will be dried on Friday. Jockeys Antonio Gallardo, Jose Ferrer and Ronnie Allen Jr. all doubled Wednesday. Both of Gallardo’s wins were for leading trainer Jamie Ness at short prices.

==

Race 2: #6 Ms Hoochie Coochie (9-2)

Three of the last four times this mare has been in a claiming race, she has won. Trainer Joe Woodard drops hers from an allowance race to the claimers and jockey Daniel Centeno, who has won three races with Woodard at the meet, keeps the mount.

==

Race 6: #9 Quality Hey (7-2)

Trainer Keith Nations has been trying to figure out this filly as he sprinted her and then went long. He cuts her back here and he speed and stamina should be tough. Nation is 31% with horses in their third race off a layoff.  – J

==

Race 8: #3 Hey Girl Hey (4-1)

This filly’s lone turf try at Gulfstream Park West should be tough to beat at this level. Trainer Kathleen O’Connell is 30% with class droppers at Tampa. Jockey Ronnie Allen Jr. is 21% with O’Connell at the meet.
