Santa Anita picks for Friday, December 27

I almost made the prediction on the opening day picks that there would be a Pick 6 carryover going into this Friday card because of the great stakes races, but I didn’t, and there is.

There won’t be a carryover into Saturday. There just are enough quality races or horses running so tread lightly and wait for Saturday and Sunday.

FIRST RACE: 1. For the People, 2. The Mothership, 3. I’m No Patsy. LONG SHOT: Winninginfashion.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Pretzel Logic, 2. Chila Ali (SCRATCHED), 3. Tribal Rain. LONG SHOT: Citizen Jane.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Cool Samurai (best bet), 2. The Admiral, 3. Icy Ride. LONG SHOT: Rough Passage.

The 2-year-old gelding COOL SAMURAI might have won his debut at Belmont had it not gotten checked in the stretch. Makes first start on West Coast for trainer John Shirreffs and Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith will take this one two turns for the first time.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Dunmore East, 2. Macias, 3. Truelee Scrappin. LONG SHOT: Anabaa Premium.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Van Dien Avenue, 2. Velvet Mesquite, 3. Sae John’s Spirit. LONG SHOT: Hot and Pleasing.

VAN DIEN AVENUE, a 3-year-old filly, actually broke her maiden at Del Mar, but she was disqualified from the purse money so she has been running against winners. Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens rides for trainer Neil French and when a big time rider shows up for a small time trainer look out.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Street Icon, 2. Chitu, 3. Beach Hut. LONG SHOT: Benny Time.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Kathleen Rose, 2. Mangita, 3. Krazypapaya. LONG SHOT: Warren’s Rosebud.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Anythingtogeteven, 2. Cactus Shines, 3. Reps and Warrants. LONG SHOT: Bluegrass Fox Trot.

Hollywood Park picks for Friday, Oct. 20

Be sure to check the Hollywood Park changes on Friday morning. I think there will be a lot of races taken off the grass due to Thursday’s rain, but since it’s closing weekend maybe they won’t.

FIRST RACE: 1. Bosserette, 2. Sprague River, 3. Sergeant O’Rourke. LONG SHOT: South Sound

==

SECOND RACE: 1. For Emma, 2. Hot Bride, 3. Stunning Drama. LONG SHOT: Time for Angie.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Julio’s Gold, 2. Midnight Lady, 3. Sultry Season. LONG SHOT: Now Hope.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Giant Cowboy (best bet), 2. Rambling House, 3. Exponentially. LONG SHOT: Candiz.

Trainer Craig Dollase is one of the best getting horses ready for their first starts (38% winners from 26 tries the last two years) and he’s even better with debuting maiden claimers (60%). In GIANT COWBOY, we have a 2-year-old gelded son of Cowboy Cal. Expect speed with jockey Edwin Maldonado aboard. Dollase and Maldonado are a 27% combination the last two years.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Ransom Canyon, 2. Scorcher, 3. Gallant Charm. LONG SHOT: Londinium.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Congregationalist, 2. Awesome Indy, 3. Quick Cenizas. LONG SHOT: Mr Superstition.

This is strictly a pace and jockey play. There is a ton of speed in this race so it’s time to look for a closer. While CONGREGATIONALIST, a son of Songandaprayer, has been known to mix it up early we think with the drop in class and reuniting with jockey Rafael Bejarano will result in the veteran letting the other speed burn out and come rallying wide on the turn. Bejarano and trainer Vladimir Cerin are a 46% winning proposition the last two years at Hollywood Park.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Always a Chance, 2. Oscillator, 3. Tangerine Tickle. LONG SHOT: Flatter Thecowgirl.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Indygo Andy, 2. Burlister, 3. Starry Shark. LONG SHOT: America Rising.

Hollywood Park opinion for Sunday, Dec. 15

Race 3: #1 Shoer Hugh

Trainer Peter Miller tried to get this 3-year-old on the grass last time, but it was move to the main track due to rain. Now he goes from route-to-sprint (24%), tries first time turf again (25%) and a turf sprint (26%) which could be the winning formula.

Hollywood Park picks for Friday, Dec. 13

FIRST RACE: 1. Chief Lion, 2. The Cleaners, 3. Incline Village. LONG SHOT: Expo and Fig.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Madoffwiththemoney (best bet), 2. Spring Breeze, 3. Woebegon. LONG SHOT: Addendum.

Think this 4-year-old colt MADOFFWITHTHEMONEY could be super live. Been claimed three out of last four races, last time by Danny Velasquez, who doesn’t claim much. The reason may be the horses synthetic record, which is 9-4-3-0. Obviously the horse didn’t like turf last time and apprentice Irving Orozco jumps on.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Rangi, 2. Summer Exclusive, 3. Old Man Lake. LONG SHOT: Ankeny Hill.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Rough Passage, 2. Midnight Hawk, 3. Arkenstone. LONG SHOT: Midnight Mayhem.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Hye I’m Jack, 2. Public Policy, 3. Bodrum. LONG SHOT: Nooten.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Amanda, 2. Lovely in Laguna, 3. Sheza Eyeopener. LONG SHOT: Visions of Candy.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. American Blend, 2. Olympic Blue, 3. Power Foot. LONG SHOT: Holladay Road.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Royal Encounter, 2, Whipstock, 3. Bluegrass Reward. LONG SHOT: Twin Six.

Hollywood Park opinions for Friday, Dec. 6

Race 5: #4 Pretty Storm

This 2-year-old filly drops to her lowest level ever ($30,000 maiden claimer) and gets a huge jockey change from apprentice Irving Orozco to Joel Rosario. The daughter of Primal Storm has shown speed every time out and today should be no different.

==

Race 8: #11 Very Thankful

This race is a split of the fifth race and looks just as tough. This 2-year-old filly is by McCann’s Mojave, who unfortunately died earlier this fall. Right after his death, his horses have started to come around first time out. Trainer Jack Carava isn’t know as a first out winner or working well with 2-year-olds but he has done in the past. Plus he puts speed jockey Martin Pedroza aboard. Look for a send from the gate.

Hollywood Park selections for Saturday, Nov. 16

FIRST RACE: 1. Silver Hustler, 2. Rock and Glory,  3. Changethechannel. LONG SHOT: Irish Presence.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Common Confusion, 2. Maximinus, 3. Dream Totem. LONG SHOT: Midnight Mayhem.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Georgia, 2. Arethusa, 3. Pleasant Mix. LONG SHOT: Be Proud.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Enterprising (best bet), 2. I’ll Wrap It Up, 3. Life’s Journey. LONG SHOT: Go Black Tie.

ENTERPRISING, a son of Elusive Quality, was given a race last time in his debut by jockey Gary Stevens and trainer Tom Proctor. Now the 2-year-old gets two turns on the turf, something he should enjoy. Look for an improved effort.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Coco de Carchy, 2. Puff Pastry, 3. Classic Journey. LONG SHOT: Make More Money.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Lilly’s Perfect, 2. Perfecta, 3. Distant Image. LONG SHOT: Tebowing.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Pimpernal, 2. Big Medicine Man, 3. Three Point Luke. LONG SHOT: Fulmerized.

PIMPERNAL has been working out with Streaming, who was an easy winner for trainer Bob Baffert in her debut on Friday.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. J K’s Mischief, 2. Our Pure Creation, 3. Golden Production. LONG SHOT: Lucky Student.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Magic Number, 2. Soul Searcher, 3. Red Red Door. LONG SHOT: Silver Gun Girl.

It isn’t often that apprentice jockey Gonzalo Nicolas is a key to a rcae, but he just might be in this $20,000 maiden claimer. Nicolas jumps off two other horses to keep the mount on MAGIC NUMBER, a daughter of Hat Trick. The filly finished a strong second at this level and distance (7 furlongs) one back and could be the one to beat.
