Santa Anita opinions for Sunday, June 5

Preview: We say goodbye to the hillside turf course as renovations start this week for the fall meet, which includes the Breeders’ Cup. There are four races on it today. There are five races on the dirt and some trainers to think twice about are Bill Spawr (1-for-15), Kristin Mulhall (1-13), Jeff Bonde (0-12) and Eric Kruljac (0-11).

Race 4: #5 Fruity (6-1): This filly came running in her second try down the hill and now trainer Simon Callaghan puts the blinkers on, a move he is 29% with. The 4-year-old should come running in the stretch for new jockey Flavien Prat, who is 29% with Callaghan.

Race 6: #2 Airlite (9-2): Here we are again down the hill with that man Flavien Prat. He rides most of trainer Richard Mandella’s horses and Mandella is 4-for-10 with horses second time on the grass. The 3-year-old finished third in his debut and should only improve.

Race 9: #8 Infinite Magic (6-1): This gelding is in the care of trainer Ted West for the first time and he is 31% with horses in that situation. Yes, Flavien Prat is aboard. The gelding has a second and third over the course and is cutting back from a route race.

Santa Anita opinions for Thursday, Jan. 14

Preview: After a week of no turf racing due to rain, the horses return to the green this week, which is a good thing. Santiago Gonzalez continues to ride great and is giving Rafael Bejarano a run for the top jockey honors.

Race 1: #6 Cant Do the Danse (4-1)

This gelding has plenty of early speed and that should do well on this track. Trainer Jeff Bonde is 36% second off the claim and this 5-year-old is taking a drop in class plus has a huge work over the track.

==

Race 5: #2 Fueled by Bourbon (6-1)

This colt is 3-for-3 on this downhill turf course (one by DQ) and jockey Tyler Baze jumps back on for trainer Peter Miller who is 21% with horses going from route to sprint.

==

Race 3: #3 Grand Yodeler (turf only)

Trainer Eddie Truman has been on fire (47% at the meet) and really hot with horses going down the hill. Truman is 21% with horses going from dirt to turf and jockey Kent Desormeaux rides back.

==

Race 8: #8 Native City

Trainer Peter Miller is 27% first-time starters in a maiden claiming race and the sire City Zip is 15% first out. Jockey Tyler Baze, who is 25% with Miller, rides.

==

BELMONT PARK

Race 6: #2 Courageisamajority (turf only)

This 3-year-old filly came with a furious kick down the lane to just miss in her last start at Aqueduct. Jockey John Velazquez stays on for trainer Graham Motion (2-for-7 in the last 60 days) and she has the best late pace ratings.

==

Race 9: #5 Jackson N Leonard (turf only)

Trainer Dominick Schettino hit with a bomb on Wednesday, but this gelding won’t be that price. Sire by Colonel John, this 3-year-old woke up on the grass and should love the added distance in this spot. Look for him to come from off the pace.

==

CHURCHILL DOWNS

Race 8: #6 Teniente Coronel (6-1)

Trainer Tom Amoss has huge numbers in a lot of categories so if we get this morning-line it will be a miracle. Amoss is 38% second off the claim and 40% with horses second time in his barn. Another sired by Colonel John, should like the added distance and jockey James Graham sticks.

Race 3: #6 Faith Pacer (3-1)

Trainer Jeff Bonde is 24% with first-time starters in MSW races and the sire Lucky Pulpit is 12% first time out while the dam’s sire (Meadowlake) is 18% with first-timers. This 2-year-old filly showed her readiness with a good work on April 29.

==

Race 6: #7 Henry’s Holiday (5-1)

When last seen, this 3-year-old was finishing fifth to American Pharoah in the Del Mar Futurity. That’s all you need to know about his class. He tries turf for the first time (sire is 13%) and he won his career debut last year so he can come out running after the layoff. Trainer Doug O’Neill is 30% from 20 starters with first-time geldings.

==

Race 8: #7 Archie Bunker (8-1)

Trainer Paddy Gallagher is 31% with first-time horses in a maiden claimer. This son of Arch (13% turf sire) gets a jockey change to the red-hot Flavian Prat.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Rocket Heat, 2. The Man, 3. New Summit. LONG SHOT: Blue Law.

THIRD RACE: 1. Endless Cruise, 2. Intermix, 3. Tiz Futurity. LONG SHOT: Presiding Justice.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Zip N Bayou (best bet), 2. Lakwani, 3. Miz Penelope. LONG SHOT: Makena.

Love horses by City Zip, both in their debuts and on the grass, and we have both here in ZIP N BAYOU (6-1). Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer puts good gate jockey Martin Pedroza aboard this 3-year-old filly.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Kafister, 2. Pulling G’s, 3. Knock Em Flat. LONG SHOT: Papa Turf.

==

SEDUIRE (4-1), a filly, returns from Northern California, where she won a minor stakes at Golden Gate. Now she returns to graded company. The third-place finisher in that race won a stakes at Santa Anita on Thursday. This daughter has speed and from the inside look for Rafael Bejarano to gun from the gate for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Lyla Della, 2. Bernier, 3. Ski’s Copper Penny. LONG SHOT: Ruby N Diamonds.

Santa Anita early opinions for Sunday, Dec. 28

Race 2: #6 Tough Sunday

One of these days this 2-year-old is going to get out of the gate in good shape and win going away. He has gate issues twice in a row and now jockey Tyler Baze takes over for trainer Steve Miyadi, who is 23% second off the layoff.

==

Race 4: #6 Mangita

British jockey Kieran Fallon is calling Santa Anita home this meet and he should excel on the turf. Not sure why trainer Bruce Headley ran this 4-year-old filly on the dirt last time because she has never finished worse than second in six tries on the Santa Anita grass.

==

Race 9: #3 A Colt Following

This gelding gets two turns for the first time and that should be no problem for the son of Montbrook. Trainer Jeff Bonde is 20% going sprint to route and is 22% with jockey Edwin Maldonado.

Los Alamitos Race Course opinions for Sunday, Dec. 21

Race 2 – LRC

#3 Changing Karma (6-1)

This 4-year-old gelding has been running on the night-time programs at Los Alamitos and now tries the big boys. Trainer Tom Bazley is 39% on dirt, in sprints and in claimers. Jockey Charlton knows him well and they should enjoy the extra distance.

==

Race 5 – LRC

#1 Radiant Journey (5-2)

Our Eyes: Trainer Philip D’Amato came loaded for this meet as he won four of his first eight races and didn’t finish off the board. This 3-year-old filly just missed in her debut and draws the No. 1 post, which has won more than half of the sprints at this fall meet.

==

Race 7 – LRC

#10 Big Hat Charlie (5-1)

Our Eyes: Look at whom this 2-year-old has been losing to in his maiden races: Dortmund and Firing Line. Do they ring a bell? Trainer Jeff Bonde makes big jockey change to speed jockey Edwin Maldonado and this ridgling has a big work coming into this race.

The 4-year-old DISTINCTIV PASSION (5-2) won twice on the old Del Mar grass course, although was DQ’d from one win.
