Del Mar, Horse racing

Del Mar picks for Friday, Nov. 25 (Sorry they are late)

Preview: Despite missing last Saturday, jockey Flavien Prat leads the riding race by one (8-7) over Santiago Gonzales. In the training standings, a hat trick on Sunday put Peter Miller on top with six victories. Then he won three more races on Thursday and he is starting to run away with the training title.

SORRY PICKS ARE LATE.

Race 1: #6 Holidayincambodia (8-1), 2. Altaira, 3. Rosarita. LONG SHOT: Audra.
This filly won at this level at LRC, then was bumped up and now comes back down. Trainer Dan Hendricks is 33% when dropping a horse two or more classes. Jockey Brice Blanc continues to ride.

Race 2: 1. Salient, 2. Jet Set Man, 3. My Uncle Al. LONG SHOT: Hot Rodin.

Race 3: 1. Mr Ability, 2. Hot Smoke, 3. Elwood J. LONG SHOT: Ms. Wakaya.

Race 4: 1. Miss Big Stuff, 2. Lajatico, 3. Sturdy One. LONG SHOT: Little Voice.

Race 5: #2 Ourroseofthenile (8-1), 2. Wicked Factor, 3. Pontificator. LONG SHOT: Tell My Fortune.
Gave an even effort in her debut in late August and hasn’t been seen since. That race has produced at least two winners. This daughter of Pioneerof the Nile got out of the gate slow and it looks like trainer Joe Herrick has worked on that. Jockey Iggy Puglisi stays aboard.

Race 6: 1. Ashleyluvssugar, 2. Flamboyant, 3. Quick Casablanca. LONG SHOT: Royal Albert Hall.

Race 7: 1. Prime Attraction, 2. Univited, 3. My Italian Babbo. LONG SHOT: Hollywood Strike.

Race 8: #11 Alsatian (8-1), 2. Extreme Heat, 3. Amodei. LONG SHOT: Bottle Service.
We liked this colt last week when he was entered but trainer Neil Drysdale scratched and we’re not happy about the outside draw but the rails are at zero so that will help anyone going wide. This colt is bred to love the turf and Drysdale has them cranked up first time out but he’s 19% second time. Good turf rider Drayden Van Dyke takes the mount.

Good luck.

Los Alamitos RC opinions for Thursday, April 14

Preview: Turf horses get a three-week rest as the circuit moves south to the dirt only Los Alamitos. The No. 1 post isn’t necessarily the best either in sprints or routes. One jockey note: David Lopez has lost his apprentice bug and is a journeyman now. It will be interesting to see who supports him. The circuit is now crying out our for an outstanding apprentice.

Race 2 – LRC

#5 Slew Keyty (6-1): This filly makes a comeback after an 11 month layoff and trainer Paul Aguirre is 39% with horses off a layoff of more than 90 days. His main man, jockey Iggy Puglisi, is aboard and they are 4-for-12 the last year at Los Al.

Race 5 – LRC

#3 Speedin With Eddie (9-2): This 3-year-old gets a big jock switch to Mario Gutierrez, who rides No. 1 for Reddam Racing, and if they didn’t think this gelding had some talent they certainly would have dropped into the maiden claiming ranks already. Blinkers go on here.

Santa Anita opinions for Saturday, Feb. 27

Preview: Lots of sprint races on the card. In looking at some jockey stats, some riders to avoid on the dirt are Tiago Pereira (1-44), Gonzalo Nicholas (1-32), Iggy Puglisi (0-17) and on the grass Joe Talamo (1-51), Mike Smith (1-28) and Victor Espinoza (1-24).

==

Race 7: #7 Tannersmymuscle (8-1)

As we mentioned jockey Joe Talamo is having trouble on the turf but on the dirt he has 16 victories. This gelding is making his second start off the layoff and trainer Ron Ellis is 36% second off the claim. The 6-year-old also has the best Brisnet Late Pace Rating.

==

Race 9: #5 Proud ‘n’ Ready (turf only) (8-1)

This filly makes her second start down the hill and while she showed speed last time she also had the best Brisnet Late Pace Rating. Trainer Peter Eurton is 25% second time grass and he’s a good combination with jockey Mario Gutierrez.

Del Mar selections for Wednesday, Aug. 5

FIRST RACE: 1. #7 Okaad (15-1), 2. Pat the Bear, 3. Bobby Z Man. LONG SHOT: Embellishing Bob.

This gelding broke his maiden going this distance in wire-to-wire fashion and we look for jockey Iggy Puglisi to try similar tactics. Trainer Paul Aguirre is 41% with horses off a 90-day plus layoff.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Atascaderan, 2. Memphis, 3. North Pacific. LONG SHOT: Hojas.
==
THIRD RACE: 1. #1 BOOK THIRTY FOUR (3-1) best bet, 2. Lassie’s Reward, 3. Market Notes. LONG SHOT: Indian Assault.

Trainer Doug O’Neill was on fire last week and he hopes to continue the roll in the new week. This 3-year-old drops into a claimer against winners for the first time and Rafael Bejarano, one of the leading jockeys, jumps on and he is 20% with O’Neill.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Autumn Flower, 2. Katy Drama, 3. Ya Ya Girl. LONG SHOT: Betterlethergo.
==
FIFTH RACE: 1. I’ll Show Me, 2. Lily Pod, 3. Audra. LONG SHOT: Microburst.
==
SIXTH RACE: 1. Viviendo El Sueno, 2. Mrazek, 3. Getoffmyback. LONG SHOT: Swiss Minister.
==
SEVENTH RACE: 1. #1 Shapely (15-1), 2. Yana, 3. Tara’s Tango. LONG SHOT: Savannah Sky.

This is a pretty good price on a good trainer (Ron Ellis). He is 32% turf to dirt and 33% third off the layoff. On top of that he is 35% with jockey Drayden Van Dyke.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Divine Tale, 2. Avo, 3. Sparkling Peg. LONG SHOT: Take It Easyplease.

Race 4 – SA

#3 All Around Brown

This gelding drops to the bottom of the maiden claiming ranks and his last race, despite going two turns, puts him right there and jockey Iggy Puglisi stays for trainer Mike Puype. There’s a real good work coming into this spot.

==

Race 9 – SA

#8 Unusual Alex

Trainer Richard Mandella is 3-for-7 second time he puts a horse on the the grass. This son of Unusual Heat should improve off that horrible debut. The sire is 15% on the turf and jockey Alex Solis stays aboard.

 ++

GULFSTREAM PARK

Race 8 – GP

#7 Gentlemans Agreement (6-1)

This Louisiana-bred is 2-for-2 in his career and now tries open company in Florida for trainer Leo Gabriel Jr. The son of Yankee Gentleman likes to press the pace before taking over and if it rains he owns a win in the mud.

==

Race 9 – GP

#8 Chepstow (7-2)

Trainer Kirk Ziadie is 47% from 19 starters with horses running second time in his care. This 5-year-old finished third at this level and Jesus Rios figures to know him better this time.

What a wacky week at Santa Anita

Maybe it was the five days of racing that turned Saturday into some of the most improbable results ever at Santa Anita.

Heck, if an 85-1 long shot wins the last race you know it’s a wacky day and public handicapper’s nightmare. Anyone who had more than two or three winners should be put into a Hall of Fame.

One thing seemed evident all weekend, the inside and speed were good at Santa Anita. New track surface, same old problem. Seemed like jockey Iggy Puglisi might have been one of the only ones to notice as he brought in a long shot to finish in the top three.

Any way, closers didn’t have a good week so just put a line through their races last week.

Been busy with work and handicapping so time to get caught up on results from the last week and start handicapping for the coming week.

Good luck.

Del Mar selections for Thursday, Nov. 20 (Bing Crosby Season) UPDATED

Entering the third week of racing at the new Del Mar fall meet and we see some interesting trends as far as post positions go.

On the Polytrack, inside is still the place to be, just like it was in the summer. Post positions 1-4 have won 62% of the races (18 of 29). The same can’t be said for the route races as the 1 and 2 posts are a combined 1 for 11 while posts 3 to 6 are 7 for 11 (72%).

On the turf course, there have been only three 5-furlong races so no real trends there. However, go around two turns, trends have changed. It was tough to win from the inside during the summer, but now posts 1 to 3 are 9 for 18 (50%). Keep an eye on it.

==

FIRST RACE: 1. Jedi Mind Trick, 2. Rocked Twice, 3. Vegas Street. LONG SHOT: Preacher Roe.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Alice Roadtrain, 2. Here’s Bella, 3. Hollywood Royalty. LONG SHOT: Private Marina.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Lookin for Money, 2. Golds Venice, 3. Lady Danger. LONG SHOT: Chia Love.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Kohala, 2. Push Girl, 3. Underhill Drive. LONG SHOT: Siena Grace.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Milton, 2. Pioneerof the West, 3. Cyrus Alexander. LONG SHOT: Madiba (SCRATCHED) new long shot: Call It Good.

I was prepared to make CYRUS ALEXANDER my best bet of the day but those post position stats made me re-think the race. MILTON comes out of the the DORTMUND maiden race, which has already produced one winner, so we’ll go that way, but an exacta box on the top three might be a way to go. MADIBA, a $700,000 yearling purchase, has been a major disappointment, but he is the “other” Hollendorfer in this spot as Jerry also starts Cyrus.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Q’ Viva, 2. Comin’offthebench, 3. Nero’s Bench. LONG SHOT: Denotation.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Super Ability (best bet), 2. Hay Dude, 3. Bettys Bambino. LONG SHOT: Mega Heat.

Jockey Joe Talamo jumps on SUPER ABILITY (4-1), a 6-year-old gelding. which is stretching out after third place finish vs. Cal Breds. This son on Langfuhr has won in open company before at Del Mar. Look for Talamo to try to go wire-to-wire.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Clem Juice, 2. Cape’s Rockette (SCRATCHED), 3. Caymus Kat. LONG SHOT: South Texas. New picks: 1. Clem Juice, 2. Gold Journey, 3. Caymus Kat. LONG SHOT: South Texas.

CLEM JUICE (6-1) is a 2-year-old daughter of Papa Clem, whose offspring does well first time out and vs. Cal-bred competition. On top of that jockey Iggy Puglisi and trainer Paul Aguirre are a good combo and seem do well in the final race of the day a lot. This filly has been training well at Los Alamitos.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Getaway Keys, 2. Ipolita, 3. Vord Queen. LONG SHOT: Lana Caprina.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Zippingaroundtown (best bet), 2. Innocent Man, 3. Sheer Talent. LONG SHOT: Hope ‘n Pray.

Jockey Iggy Puglisi and trainer Paul Aguirre are quite the combination, winning at a 20% rate over the last 75 mounts. On top of that, Aguirre is 4-for-8 with horses coming off a 180-day or more layoff so ZIPPINGAROUNDTOWN (12-1) looks live to me.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Awesome Diamond, 2. Ultimate Holiday, 3. Visarno. LONG SHOT: Hashtag Stormy.

Trainer Patrick Biancone unveiled a nice 2-year-old a year ago in Diamond Bachelor. This time it’s a filly, AWESOME DIAMOND (8-1), and she cost $625,000. Biancone is 2-for-7 with first-time starters and this daughter of Galileo looks pretty good on paper.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Divine Vision, 2. Test Ride, 3. Sing With Bling. LONG SHOT: Dragon Attack.

SIXTH RACE: 1. Hanna No Sir, 2. Rockin Girl, 3. Moscato Girl. LONG SHOT: Diamonds Dena.

Santa Anita picks for Saturday, March 22

FIRST RACE: 1. Peacenik, 2. Muchos Besos, 3. Senator Bob. LONG SHOT: Gnarly Dude.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. La Sorella, 2. Miss Super Quick, 3. Sweet as a Rose. LONG SHOT: Shapely.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Wistfullee Mine, 2. We Have Lift Off, 3. Street Maven. LONG SHOT: Roman Tizzy.

WISTFULLEE MINE, a 4-year-old gelding, was bred to run all day, yet in his eighth career start this is the longest he has run. He ran against winners last time for some reason and now returns to the maiden claiming ranks. Veteran jockey Iggy Puglisi has seven wins at the meet from limited starters and knows what to do.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Temeraine, 2. Vagabond Shoes, 3. Lucayan. LONG SHOT: Niagara Falls.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Louden’s Gray (best bet), 2. Midnight Storm, 3. Twenty Percent. LONG SHOT: Gameboy Luke.

OK, we’re bucking a couple of bad trends here, but we feel something is up with LOUDEN’S GRAY. Trainer Kristin Mulhall is 0-for-36 at the meet and just 1-for-17 with first-time starters the last two years, yet she is able to attract jockey Martin Garcia, even though trainer Bob Baffert has a horse in the race. This son of Street Sense has two big works showing and might be ready to roll.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Mega Heat, 2. Stoney Fleece, 3. Hog’s Hollow. LONG SHOT: El Commodore.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Twin Six, 2. Londinium, 3. Anabaa Premium. LONG SHOT: Joe Carl.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Home Run Kitten, 2. Diamond Bachelor, 3. Enterprising. LONG SHOT: Quotient.

This son of Kitten’s Joy, HOME RUN KITTEN, is bred to run all day on the grass, but this is the first time he’s being allowed to do that. Trainer David Hofmans tried him on the dirt, finishing fifth in the Robert B. Lewis to Candy Boy, hardly a disgrace. Jockey Joe Talamo keeps the mount and we always like “Talamo on the turf.”

THIRD RACE: 1. Oughttobenaughty (best bet), 2. Provenance, 3. Autumn View. LONG SHOT: Epistemology.

This 4-year-old filly OUGHTTOBENAUGHTY got rained off the turf in her second start and still ran well at Hollywood Park. Trainer Scott Hansen is 3-for-9 with turf starters and he does well off the layoff (1-for-2). Underrated journeyman jockey Iggy Puglisi is 7-for-23 at the meet, including two wins on Thursday.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Full’s Dress Code, 2. Hearitforthegirls, 3. Writer Fever. LONG SHOT: E Equalsmcsquared.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Bettys Bambino, 2. Jet Warrior, 3. Back to Bako. LONG SHOT: Luz Atticus.

BETTYS BAMBINO, a 4-year-old gelding, was also rained off his turf debut and went on to a stunning 9½-length win on a wet/fast track for trainer Peter Eurton, who never has them cranked up first time. This son of Unusual Heat was bred to run on the turf and he gets his shot here down the hill.
