“That’s a wrap!’

Woodmans_Luck_cb3_72

Woodman’s Luck and Corey Nakatani won the finale at Hollywood Park as the Inglewood oval hosted its last race card on Sunday, Dec. 22, before closing the doors for good. The city of Inglewood has approved plans to demolish the “track of lakes and flowers”, and build nearly 3,000 homes on the 238-acre site along with retail outlets, offices, and a park. BENOIT PHOTO

A few quotes courtesy of the Hollywood Park publicity department following the final race at the historic track on Sunday:

Jockey Corey Nakatani on winning the final race on Woodman’s Luck:

“Well, I made history.  I won the last race and got the last set of days (he received a three-day suspension from the stewards earlier Sunday) at Hollywood Park.  Kind of bittersweet.  That was really emotional.  It’s hard to really say that much.  This has always been such a great place to be.  After winning a bunch of races here, it’s hard to see it go.  It’s pretty sad.”

==

Jockey Rafael Bejarano on winning the final riding title:

“It feels great to win the last title.  It means a lot to me.  When I came back to the winner’s circle, I could hear everyone cheering and I was just so happy.”

==

Trainer Vladimir Cerin on winning the final race:

“I almost would have taken a four-horse dead heat there and let everyone have a piece of the last race.  When they were coming down the stretch, all I could think of is how sad that it was over. I didn’t think he could win from where he was.  Nakatani has given us some fantastic rides this meet. I think this is the second photo finish he’s won for us like this.  Tama County (a winner Nov. 17) was also owned by (David and Holly Wilson) and he had no chance, like this horse, at the sixteenth pole, but won it.  Oddly enough, Gary Stevens won a race for me here on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24, 2000) on a horse named Jingle Bell Hop and that was the last race on the card.  It’s almost hard to enjoy the win when you think this is the last race at this race track.  When I started training here, I think it took me a year to win my first race and to have it end like this just seems surreal.”

Kudos to Hollywood Park track announcer Vic Stauffer for his final race call in Inglewood. It was great.

“That’s a wrap.”

Remember everything has to be paid out Sunday, the final day ever at Hollywood Park. Big carryover in the Pick Sux. Good luck.

FIRST RACE: 1. Aqua Revelation, 2. Maxx the Giant, 3. Wicked Finance. LONG SHOT: Apostle Paul.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Warren’s Assassin, 2. Woodlandsway, 3. Hugger of Trees. LONG SHOT: Sky Angel.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Highly Rated, 2. Love Tale, 3. Prettypriceygirl. LONG SHOT: Warren’s Internet.

==

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. One Magical Girl, 2. Mia Isabel, 3. Warren’s Judy. LONG SHOT: Jet Blue Girl.

Jockey Kayla Stra has had a great Hollywood Park meet with limited opportunities and she scored on a bomber again on Friday. Here she picks up the mount on this 4-year-old filly ONE MAGICAL GIRL, trained by Northern California-based John Martin. However, this filly has won before at Hollywood Park and looks to do it again for a 28% winning trainer.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Moon Ride (best bet), 2. Miss Go Free, 3. Frannie’sspirttoo. LONG SHOT: Red Red Door.

Rafael Bejarano is trying to win another riding title and figures to be riding with zeal on the final day at Hollywood Park. Trainer Mike Puype puts blinkers on and drops this 3-year-old filly MOON RIDE to her lowest level ever looking to break her maiden.

==

Hollywood Park picks for Saturday, Dec. 21 (updated)

FIRST RACE: 1. Sinfully, 2. Imperative, 3. Square Dancer. LONG SHOT: Christopher Street.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Fire in the Wind, 2. Sammy’s a Runnin’, 3. Muchos Besos. LONG SHOT: Courtside.

It looks like the connections of FIRE IN THE WIND are trying to get one more victory out of this Hollywood Park-loving horse before Sunday’s closing day. This 6-year-old gelding has four career wins in Inglewood out of five lifetime wins. He has been away since April, but has a nice workout last week and might be ready to roll.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Dancinginthestreet, 2. Blameitonthecat, 3. Abide in Me. LONG SHOT: Kitten de Pere.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Katie’s Garden, 2. Tiz Midnight, 3. Legacy. LONG SHOT: Provenance.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Lucky Cotton, 2. Too Fast to Pass, 3. Old Man Lake. LONG SHOT: Judge Carr (SCRATCHED).

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Pretty Storm, 2. U R Lucky, 3. Fashionably Rich. LONG SHOT: Graycious Guest.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Sensationalize, 2. Level headed, 3. Somethingabouther. LONG SHOT: Foxy Boss.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Guidopanzini, 2. Change of Plan, 3. Da Ruler. LONG SHOT: Cost of Freedom.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. U S Citizen, 2. Brokered, 3. Protocal. LONG SHOT: Weewinnin.

==

TENTH RACE: 1.  Swiss Lake Yodeler, 2. Global Hottie, 3. Sprouts. LONG SHOT: Meinertzhageni. GLOBAL HOTTIE IS SCRATCHED.

There is no doubt these 2-year-old Cal-bred fillies will have a tough time beating Bob Baffert’s GLOBAL HOTTIE, who will likely be odds on, but this Jerry Hollendorfer trainee SWISS LAKE YODELER just might be the one. Lately, it has been Hollendorfer’s world and we’ve just been living in it as he has been on fire. This 2-year-old daughter of Swiss Yodeler beat a lot of these in this race on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita. If you remember that day, which was the first day of the Breeders’ Cup, there was a tremendous inside speed bias. However, this filly came out slightly off the pace and she was four wide most of the way so we’re giving her extra credit for that and expect a big effort here.

==

ELEVENTH RACE: 1. Moscato Girl, 2. Writer Fever, 3. Ipolita. LONG SHOT: Anniversary Kitty.

Friday’s top choice winners: 1 (Julio’s Gold $8.20, third race)

Friday’s second choice winners: 3 (Sprague River $9.40, first; Scorcher $7, fifth; Oscillator $7.80, seventh)

Hollywood Park picks for Friday, Oct. 20

Be sure to check the Hollywood Park changes on Friday morning. I think there will be a lot of races taken off the grass due to Thursday’s rain, but since it’s closing weekend maybe they won’t.

FIRST RACE: 1. Bosserette, 2. Sprague River, 3. Sergeant O’Rourke. LONG SHOT: South Sound

==

SECOND RACE: 1. For Emma, 2. Hot Bride, 3. Stunning Drama. LONG SHOT: Time for Angie.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Julio’s Gold, 2. Midnight Lady, 3. Sultry Season. LONG SHOT: Now Hope.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Giant Cowboy (best bet), 2. Rambling House, 3. Exponentially. LONG SHOT: Candiz.

Trainer Craig Dollase is one of the best getting horses ready for their first starts (38% winners from 26 tries the last two years) and he’s even better with debuting maiden claimers (60%). In GIANT COWBOY, we have a 2-year-old gelded son of Cowboy Cal. Expect speed with jockey Edwin Maldonado aboard. Dollase and Maldonado are a 27% combination the last two years.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Ransom Canyon, 2. Scorcher, 3. Gallant Charm. LONG SHOT: Londinium.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Congregationalist, 2. Awesome Indy, 3. Quick Cenizas. LONG SHOT: Mr Superstition.

This is strictly a pace and jockey play. There is a ton of speed in this race so it’s time to look for a closer. While CONGREGATIONALIST, a son of Songandaprayer, has been known to mix it up early we think with the drop in class and reuniting with jockey Rafael Bejarano will result in the veteran letting the other speed burn out and come rallying wide on the turn. Bejarano and trainer Vladimir Cerin are a 46% winning proposition the last two years at Hollywood Park.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Always a Chance, 2. Oscillator, 3. Tangerine Tickle. LONG SHOT: Flatter Thecowgirl.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Indygo Andy, 2. Burlister, 3. Starry Shark. LONG SHOT: America Rising.

Hollywood Park opinion for Sunday, Dec. 15

Race 3: #1 Shoer Hugh

Trainer Peter Miller tried to get this 3-year-old on the grass last time, but it was move to the main track due to rain. Now he goes from route-to-sprint (24%), tries first time turf again (25%) and a turf sprint (26%) which could be the winning formula.

FIRST RACE: 1. Hotradamus, 2. Tripski, 3. Circa’sgoldengear. LONG SHOT: Royal F J.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Pat’s Back, 2. She’s a Go Girl, 3. Best by Far. LONG SHOT: Funny Gal.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Temeraine, 2. Lucayan, 3. Artic North. LONG SHOT: Segway.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Toledo Eddie, 2. Zuboff, 3. Dunmore East. LONG SHOT: Would You.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Faith Hope Love, 2. Sheza Smoke Show, 3. Salsita. LONG SHOT: Sierra Electrica.

==

SIXTH RACE:  1. Street Status (best bet), 2. Ice Cream Truck, 3. Intoclassymischief. LONG SHOT: Good Company.

STREET STATUS, a 3-year-old son of Street Boss, drops from straight maiden to maiden claiming $20,000, always a winning formula. Got off to a slow start in last and was bumped so had an excuse to make jockey Rafael Bejarano ride again.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Drill, 2. Soi Phet, 3. Hear the Ghost. LONG SHOT: Rousing Sermon.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Boyett, 2. Usbek Thunder, 3. Sumerian. LONG SHOT: Bench Light.

NINTH RACE: 1. Kobe’s Back, 2. Shared Belief, 3. Tap It Rich. LONG SHOT: Candy Boy.

==

TENTH RACE: 1. Euroclydon, 2. Im a Giant Star, 3. Kantina Kowgirl. LONG SHOT: Chilada.

EUROCLYDON is a 2-year-old daughter of Singletary, who was a pretty good turf horse in his day. This Eoin Harty trainee showed good speed in two sprint preps and now she goes long on the grass. Expect her to go to the front under new rider Corey Nakatani and never look back.

Hollywood Park picks for Friday, Dec. 13

FIRST RACE: 1. Chief Lion, 2. The Cleaners, 3. Incline Village. LONG SHOT: Expo and Fig.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Madoffwiththemoney (best bet), 2. Spring Breeze, 3. Woebegon. LONG SHOT: Addendum.

Think this 4-year-old colt MADOFFWITHTHEMONEY could be super live. Been claimed three out of last four races, last time by Danny Velasquez, who doesn’t claim much. The reason may be the horses synthetic record, which is 9-4-3-0. Obviously the horse didn’t like turf last time and apprentice Irving Orozco jumps on.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Rangi, 2. Summer Exclusive, 3. Old Man Lake. LONG SHOT: Ankeny Hill.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Rough Passage, 2. Midnight Hawk, 3. Arkenstone. LONG SHOT: Midnight Mayhem.

Hollywood Park picks for Thursday, December 12

RACE 1: 1. Only Joise Knows, 2. With a Miracle, 3. Appealing Resume. LONG SHOT: Tribal Chatter.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Wonderful Union, 2. Street Choir, 3. Mikey T. LONG SHOT: Wistfullee Mine.

This 3-year-old gelding WONDERFUL UNION showed plenty of speed last time before fading in the final furlong. He takes a drop in class and could be long gone under jockey Edwin Maldonado, who is 31% with trainer Ron Ellis. Ellis is 24% with maiden claimers.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Cinco de Mario (best bet), 2. Nome, 3. Sidepocket Champ. LONG SHOT: Di Conti.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Friendswith K Mill, 2. Cactus Shines, 3. Sir Macho. LONG SHOT: Big Rosie Brown.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. High On Final, 2. Elusive Journey, 3. Omar Little. LONG SHOT: Pressure Time.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Melanistic, 2. Rathbaun, 3. English Crossing. LONG SHOT: Demonsterous.

Trainer Michael Catalano Jr. makes his first start this fall/winter in Southern California with this 4-year-old filly MELANISTIC. Catalano, who has trained mainly at Suffolk Downs in Massachusetts, is a 27% trainer from 79 starters. This daughter of Ministers Wild Cat has won 2-of-3 efforts at this 1 1/16-mile distance, but none on synthetic. She has a couple of good works over the Hollywood Park surface and might be ready for a winning effort.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Indecise, 2. Miss Well Molded, 3. Flashy Ways. LONG SHOT: Silver Hustler.

Hollywood Park opinions for Saturday, Dec. 7

Race 3: #3 Winding Way

This 4-year-old filly finished second in the Grade III Senator Ken Maddy at Santa Anita. She has never run this distance over the Hollywood Park turf course, but trainer Carla Gaines has a 60% win clip in turf sprints plus leading jockey Rafael Bejarano is aboard.

==

Race 5: #1 Toomuchinformation (turf only)

Trainer Jeff Mullins is 30% in 20 tries with horses the first time on the turf. This 2-year-old gelding has been facing some tough youngsters in SoCal like Tap It Rich, , New Years Day and Bond Holder. If he takes to the turf, look out.

Race 5: #4 Pretty Storm

This 2-year-old filly drops to her lowest level ever ($30,000 maiden claimer) and gets a huge jockey change from apprentice Irving Orozco to Joel Rosario. The daughter of Primal Storm has shown speed every time out and today should be no different.

==

Race 8: #11 Very Thankful

This race is a split of the fifth race and looks just as tough. This 2-year-old filly is by McCann’s Mojave, who unfortunately died earlier this fall. Right after his death, his horses have started to come around first time out. Trainer Jack Carava isn’t know as a first out winner or working well with 2-year-olds but he has done in the past. Plus he puts speed jockey Martin Pedroza aboard. Look for a send from the gate.
