Del Mar selections for Thursday, Sept. 1

Preview: A little more variety on today’s card as opposed to Wednesday when there was just one turf race. The turf rails are at 24 feet even though it’s the last week of the meet. Jockey Flavien Prat is looking to win his first riding title in SoCal and leads Rafael Bejarano 35-28 at the start of the week. Santiago Gonzalez is third with 27 winners.

Race 1: 1. #1 Conquest So True (6-1), 2. Generous Pour, 3. Marriedtoaminister. LONG SHOT: Brookes All Mine.
Trainer Vladimir Cerin cuts this filly back from two turns to one turn and he’s 29% with that move. Apprentice rider Chad Lindsay stays aboard and he’s 24% with Cerin. The 4-year-old also has Brisnet’s top Class Rating.

Race 2: 1. Five Palms, 2. Glacken Too, 3. Cherubim. LONG SHOT: Spirit Rules.

Race 3: 1. #3 Silver Summer (8-1), 2. Smokey’s Legacy, 3. Pee Wee Reese. LONG SHOT: Viviendo El Sueno.
This 4-year-old makes his third start off a layoff for trainer Anthony Saavedra, who is 15% in that category. The key here is the addition of Flavien Prat who has ridden the turf course to perfection this meet most of the time.

Race 4: 1. Del Cielo, 2. Back Beauty, 3. Seeking Shamrocks. LONG SHOT: Private Terrace.

Race 5: 1. #6 David’s Memory (20-1), 2. The Big Train, 3. California Silver. LONG SHOT: Natural Stride.
The gelding is making his first trip around two turns and running on the grass, but maybe this is what trainer Hector Palma was setting up all along. This is a 4-year-old son of Vronsky (Danzig) out of an Unusual Heat mare. That screams two turns on the turf. There is also a good work on Aug. 22 saying he might be ready.

Race 6: 1. Who Said Lucky, 2. My Aunt Tillie, 3. Glory Run. LONG SHOT: Bella Sierra.

Race 7: 1. Curlin’s Fox BEST BET, 2. Envahir, 3. Tiz a Kiss. LONG SHOT: K P Wildcat.

Race 8: 1. Proud of Our Kids, 2. The All Button, 3. Maven Harry. LONG SHOT: War Ruler.

Santa Anita opinions for Sunday, June 26

Preview: So the day after the Gold Cup and we have nine races with just some 50-odd horses entered. Just lovely. Good luck trying to find prices on this card.

Race 2 – SA
#1 Ipray (5-2): This filly finished second to easier in her last for trainer Hector Palma, who is 26% with beaten favorites. Jockey Rafael Bejarano stays aboard and he’s 44% with Palma at Santa Anita.

Race 4 – SA
#4 Chris and Dave (4-1): This gelding returns to the David Jacobson barn after runs in two other barns. The 3-year-old pressed the pace and won last time and has the top Brisnet Late Pace Rating. He is also 2-for-2 at the distance.

Race 7 – SA
#2 Warren’s Super Cat (6-1): This mare broke her maiden in her seventh try last time, but the key here for trainer Jorge Gutierrez will be the ride of jockey Flavien Prat. There is a ton of speed in this race and if Prat brings this mare from off the pace like he did in here last race she should be a winner.

Santa Anita opinions for Sunday, May 17

Race 5: #1 Lust for Life (NL)

This 4-year-old filly failed as the favorite last time out, but was claimed by trainer Hector Palma, who is 38% first off the claim. Big jock switch to Rafael Bejarano, who is 3-for-6 with Palma at Santa Anita.

==

Race 7: #2 Pepper Sweet (NL)

Lots of changes with this 5-year-old. Trainer Richard Baltas takes the blinkers off and the horse has been gelded since last race last year. Baltas is 30% with horses for layoffs of plus 180 days and Baltas is 30% with jockey Rafael Bejarano.

Jockey Joe Talamo could have ridden others in this race, including two for regular client trainer Ron Ellis, but he ends up on this 5-year-old AIRFOIL (4-1) for trainer Vladimir Cerin. The gelding seems primed for a big effort and has been in the money 6-of-10 times on the Santa Anita dirt.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Pankhurst (turf only), 2. Jaded Glory, 3. Rainha Da Bateria. LONG SHOT: Sharla Rae.

PANKHURST (6-1), a 3-year-old filly, who is shipping down from Woodbine, tries turf for the first time and being sired by Artie Schiller gives her every right to like. Jockey Corey Nakatani jumps on for trainer Mark Casse, who is 22% going sprint to route.

THIRD RACE: 1. Proud Vixen, 2. Consecrate, 3. Sweet Factory. LONG SHOT: Seans Silverdancer (SCRATCHED).

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Peg’s Journey (best bet), 2. Spoiledandentitled, 3. Warren’s Trica R. LONG SHOT: Clever Expansion.

Jockey Kent Desormeaux has scored with a couple of first-time starters in the last week and he gets aboard another one here in PEG’S JOURNEY. Good Journey is a decent first out sire and this filly has a couple of decent works showing for trainer Hector Palma. There don’t appear to be any world beaters in this race.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Cause Im a Bigshot, 2. Magic Spot, 3. Unusual Style. LONG SHOT: Vanlose Stairway.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Hall of Fame, 2. Yard Line, 3. Big Cazanova. LONG SHOT: Talent Show.

SIR PERSRVERE, a 4-year-old gelding, makes his second career start and first try on the grass. Bertrando has always been a good stretch out sire. Apprentice Drayden Van Dyke jumps on and he is a 20% proposition from 15 mounts with trainer Marty Jones.

Santa Anita selections for Saturday, April 19

FIRST RACE: 1. Timeless Indy, 2. Valley Cat, 3. Half Strike. LONG SHOT: Harlington Night.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Valdirone (best bet), 2. Boozer, 3. Back to Bako. LONG SHOT: Love Rules All.

VALDIRONE tired in his return to the races last month, but was hardly disgraced, finishing fourth at this level. Jockey Joe Talamo will have him forwardly placed early and that style has been working down the hill.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Yahilwa, 2. Fleet of Gold, 3. Sagebrush. LONG SHOT: Melasistic.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Born Lucky, 2. Fiesta Express, 3. Ronda Rocks. LONG SHOT: Quinnette.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Ruff Proof, 2. Mia’s Storm, 3. Silk in Silver. LONG SHOT: Among the Stars.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. King of Jazz, 2. Powerful, 3. Aqua Revelation. LONG SHOT: Lord Lochinvar.

KING OF JAZZ, a son of Giant’s Causeway, must overcome a couple of obstacles in his career debut: running long on the turf. Still, we think trainer Hector Palma will have this 4-year-old ready to go, especially off the last two works showing. On top of that, Palma owns a piece of the colt.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Midnight Storm, 2. Sooner Born, 3. Doctor Dempsey. LONG SHOT: Shakahari.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Home Run Kitten, 2. Enterprising, 3. Flamboyant. LONG SHOT: Excessive Kid.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Glitter of Silver, 2. Gospel Music, 3. Bart the Barrister. LONG SHOT: Tavern Law.
