Gulfstream Park West, Horse racing, Santa Anita

Santa Anita opinions for Monday, Oct. 12 (Plus Gulfstream Park West)

Race 5: #5 Desert Thief (7-2)

This filly has done her best running at Santa Anita with a 9-2-2-3 record so that no doubt was a reason trainer Bill Spawr claimed her. Spawr is 32% first off the claim and the filly has some real good works coming into the race.

==

Race 7: #6 Zackos My Man (12-1)

Trainer Sam Scolamieri doesn’t start many but when he does his horses are live. This 4-year-old has won over the track before and Scolamieri is 3-for-9 off a 31-60-day layoff. Tiago Pereira is this barn’s main rider and he’s 27% with the trainer.

==

Gulfstream Park West

Race 4: #4 Hatattack (turf only) (12-1)

This 2-year-old colt was claimed out of his debut by trainer Jena Antonucci, no doubt with turf in mind. The sire Hat Trick is 19% with first-time turfers. Jockey Edgrd Zayas keeps the mount, which is a good sign.

==

Race 9: #3 Will Be Magical (9-2)

Trainer Bill Kaplan turns this filly back from a route race. He is 18% with a big ROI when going sprint-route-sprint. This daughter of Wilburn doesn’t have a lot of early speed but she had a good work recently and maybe ready to roll.

==
SECOND RACE: 1. Desert Steel, 2. Sky Forever, 3. Autumn Twilight. LONG SHOT: Cin City Lady.
==
THIRD RACE: 1. MAGIC LILLY (5-2) best bet, 2. Seeking Shamrocks, 3. Sweetrayofsunshine. LONG SHOT: Lucky Student.

This 4-year-old filly was claimed by trainer John Martin on the Northern California circuit and shipped south. This will be her lowest level ever in SoCal and Martin is 31% first off the claim and he goes to leading jockey Rafael Bejarano, who is 1-for-1 at the meet with Martin.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Bella Breeze, 2. Rush of Day, 3. Let the Girl Go. LONG SHOT: Queen Cali.
==
FIFTH RACE: 1. Dressed in Hermes, 2. Rideo, 3. Path of David (Scratched) new pick: Irish. LONG SHOT: Hollywood Don.

This gelding closed ground in his debut on the dirt, but he is bred to turf and go two turns, which he does here. The sire Hat Trick is 21% with first-time turfers and jockey Tyler Baze takes over for trainer Janet Armstrong.

==

Race 6: 1. #4 Story to Tell (8-1), 2. Yiannis, 3. Forver, Juanito. LONG SHOT: Top Fortitude.

This 3-year-old has never been off the board (4-2-1-1) when he has run on the dirt. Trainer Dan Hendricks doesn’t have great stats off the layoff, but he had this one ready to win his career debut and there is a big work over the track showing. Jockey Joe Talamo keeps the mount.

==

==

Santa Anita selections for Sunday, Sept. 28

Bad job of handicapping on Saturday. Talked myself out of a couple of horses, didn’t pay attention to some breeding I was looking for down the hill and let other opinions get in the way of picking horses. Sorry. Should have done better.

==

FIRST RACE: 1. Nueva Fortuna, 2. Speckles, 3. Quinnetta. LONG SHOT: Sultry Season.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Midnight Candy (best bet), 2. Bullwinkle Babe, 3. Yes Yes Baroness. LONG SHOT: Cora Elizabeth.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Storm Power, 2. Cherubim, 3. Kristo. LONG SHOT: Chief Lion.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Sweet Shop, 2. Son of War, 3. Mr. Excavator. LONG SHOT: Dench.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Zippingaroundtown, 2. Awesome Indy, 3. Heyyoucan. LONG SHOT: Cuzan.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Daddy’s Duo, 2. Zippinaroundtown, 3. Sister Hubert. LONG SHOT: Sheza Lucky Strike.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Bright Thought, 2. Big John B., 3. Starspangled Heat. LONG SHOT: Irish Surf.

Trainer Phil D’Amato has two horses in this race, BRIGHT THOUGHT  (5-1) and favored Big John B. We’re going to side with the longer price. This is D’Amato’s first time training this son of Hat Trick, who has won three of his four career races over this course. Play a good-sized exacta box.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Olivia’s Greatdane, 2. Girl Downstairs, 3. Megyns Gold. LONG SHOT: Blooming Hannah.

If trainer Bob Baffert has a first-time starter at 8-1 on the morning-line like OLIVIA’S GREATDANE, we’re going to take a swing. This daughter of Ghostzapper has two good works over the track, including a bullet one back. Jockey Victor Espinoza jumps on and he is 4-for-10 with Baffert over the last two years at Santa Anita.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Royal Temptress, 2. Genuine Quality, 3. Charlie’s Angle. LONG SHOT: Tangelo.

Hollywood Park selections for Saturday, Nov. 16

FIRST RACE: 1. Silver Hustler, 2. Rock and Glory,  3. Changethechannel. LONG SHOT: Irish Presence.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Common Confusion, 2. Maximinus, 3. Dream Totem. LONG SHOT: Midnight Mayhem.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Georgia, 2. Arethusa, 3. Pleasant Mix. LONG SHOT: Be Proud.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Enterprising (best bet), 2. I’ll Wrap It Up, 3. Life’s Journey. LONG SHOT: Go Black Tie.

ENTERPRISING, a son of Elusive Quality, was given a race last time in his debut by jockey Gary Stevens and trainer Tom Proctor. Now the 2-year-old gets two turns on the turf, something he should enjoy. Look for an improved effort.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Coco de Carchy, 2. Puff Pastry, 3. Classic Journey. LONG SHOT: Make More Money.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Lilly’s Perfect, 2. Perfecta, 3. Distant Image. LONG SHOT: Tebowing.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Pimpernal, 2. Big Medicine Man, 3. Three Point Luke. LONG SHOT: Fulmerized.

PIMPERNAL has been working out with Streaming, who was an easy winner for trainer Bob Baffert in her debut on Friday.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. J K’s Mischief, 2. Our Pure Creation, 3. Golden Production. LONG SHOT: Lucky Student.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Magic Number, 2. Soul Searcher, 3. Red Red Door. LONG SHOT: Silver Gun Girl.

It isn’t often that apprentice jockey Gonzalo Nicolas is a key to a rcae, but he just might be in this $20,000 maiden claimer. Nicolas jumps off two other horses to keep the mount on MAGIC NUMBER, a daughter of Hat Trick. The filly finished a strong second at this level and distance (7 furlongs) one back and could be the one to beat.
