Gulfstream Park opinions for Saturday, Jan. 28

Race 3 (Hurricane Bertie): #1 Genre (7-2): Had a prep over the track in the Rampart and might get the job done cutting back to 7 furlongs.

Race 5 (Poseodon Handicap): #1 Mylute (10-1): Tough race. Three horses which were on the Pegasus also-eligible list set to go here. This 7-year-old is coming out of the Cigar Mile, which has produced three next out winners. Back him up with the favorites.

Race 7 (Ladies’ Turf Sprint): #10 Triple Chelsea (6-1): Coming down from Tampa Bay. She will be closing down the lane. Hope fractions are fast enough.

Race 9 (Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint): #11 Power Alert (4-1): This gelding is a perfect 4-for-4 on this course. Need we say more?

Race 10 (La Prevoyante Handicap): #7 Arles (7-2): Just missed winning a Grade III at Del Mar. Tries again here for Graham Motion.

Race 11 (W.L. McKnight Handicap): #6 Charming Kitten (9-2): Ran in Ireland twice last year. Has an 8-4-2-0 record over this course and Mike Smith rides.

Good luck.

Joe Talamo looking for Santa Anita riding title

Jockey Joe Talamo has been there before … like last year.

He affable Cajun was four wins up on the Hollywood Park riding colony with one week to go and during the last week he fell flat on his face, finishing third in the standings.

This year, at the same time of the year but a different location (Arcadia), Talamo is 10 wins up on Tyler Baze heading into the final eight days of action at the inaugural Santa Anita spring/summer meet and Talamo appears to be gaining momentum.

He won two Grade I races last Saturday and leads the way the last two weeks with seven victories from 46 mounts.

Tiago Pereira (19 mounts), Martin Garcia (31) and Edwin Maldonado (33) have six wins over the same period while Baze (32), apprentice Drayden Van Dyke (34) and Fernando Perez (34) have five victories.

Kent Desormeaux has been slumping, going 2-for-27 while newcomer Elvis Trujillo is making a big move with 12 wins from 65 mounts at the meet which places him tied for ninth in the standings despite getting a late start after moving his tack from Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

As predicted by himself, trainer Doug O’Neill’s barn has gone into a slump with just two wins from its last 22 starts, but O’Neill still is on top of the standings.

Peter Miller continues his roller-coaster last three months and has hit another hot streak with six wins from 25 starters the last two weeks.

Jerry Hollendorfer is three for his last 18 while Bill Spawr is three for his last five.
