Santa Anita opinions for Saturday, Feb. 27

Preview: Lots of sprint races on the card. In looking at some jockey stats, some riders to avoid on the dirt are Tiago Pereira (1-44), Gonzalo Nicholas (1-32), Iggy Puglisi (0-17) and on the grass Joe Talamo (1-51), Mike Smith (1-28) and Victor Espinoza (1-24).

==

Race 7: #7 Tannersmymuscle (8-1)

As we mentioned jockey Joe Talamo is having trouble on the turf but on the dirt he has 16 victories. This gelding is making his second start off the layoff and trainer Ron Ellis is 36% second off the claim. The 6-year-old also has the best Brisnet Late Pace Rating.

==

Race 9: #5 Proud ‘n’ Ready (turf only) (8-1)

This filly makes her second start down the hill and while she showed speed last time she also had the best Brisnet Late Pace Rating. Trainer Peter Eurton is 25% second time grass and he’s a good combination with jockey Mario Gutierrez.

Santa Anita opinions for Friday, Jan. 29

Preview: Another ho-hum card. Jockeys to stay away from in dirt races are Tiago Pereira (1-28), Gonzalo Nicholas (1-20), Chester Bonnet (0-20) and Ty Kennedy (0-17)..

==

Race 4: #4 Exfanofsixties (8-1)

This filly was showing improvement before she went to the sidelines for trainer A C Avila, who is 30% with horses off a 46-90-day layoff. Avila has put three straight 7-furlong workouts in this 4-year-old so she should be plenty fit. Jockey Fernando Perez takes the mount and he is 23% with Avila

==

Race 7: #8 Behest (5-1)

Trainer Phil D’Amato moves this filly to the turf for the first time and D’Amato is 15% when he does that. He is also 22% third off the layoff and he puts jockey Drayden Van Dyke aboard.

FIRST RACE: 1. Big Rosie Brown, 2. Runningwiththelute, 3. Light Striker. LONG SHOT: Veronica Bay.

==
SECOND RACE: 1. Ain’t No Other, 2. Giant Ego, 3. Pepnic. LONG SHOT: Royal FJ.
==
THIRD RACE: 1. STELLAR WIND (best bet), 2. Big Book, 3. Ultimate Holiday. LONG SHOT: Hone In.
Just single Stellar Wind in all of your horizontal wagers.
==
FOURTH RACE: 1. Chasing the Heat, 2. My Slew, 3. Maximinus. LONG SHOT: No Contingency.
==
FIFTH RACE: 1. #7 Poythress (5-1), 2. Professor Berns, 3. Gigantis. LONG SHOT: Third Division.

Trainer Dan Hendricks tried to get this son of Bellamy Road on the grass last time but it was rained off. Hendricks wins a high percentage of maiden claimers at Del Mar and this 3-year-old goes from MSW to MC. Also, huge jockey change from Gonzalo Nicholas to Joe Talamo.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Hide My Heart, 2. Always a Chance, 3. Lucky Student. LONG SHOT: Moscato Girl.
==
SEVENTH RACE: 1. #4 The Gomper (4-1), 2. Hunt, 3. Chiropractor. LONG SHOT: Forest Blue.

Had a troubled start last time and had to come from way out of it and still managed to finish third. Gets a good draw here and switches to jockey Flavien Prat, who is 25% with trainer Jerry Hollendorfer at Del Mar.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Sunbeamsfromhaven, 2. Bellamy Concerto, 3. Blue Anchor. LONG SHOT: Says Me.

Del Mar selections for Friday, Aug. 28

Race 2: #2 Midnight Belle (3-1)

Trainer Mark Glatt got the comeback race out of the way for this daughter of Bernardini and now he sends her two turns for the first time, something she is bred to do. The 3-year-old has a couple of good works since opening week and she’s out of a Bertrando mare and I loved Bertrandos stretching out plus jockey Rafael Bejarano stays aboard.

==

Race 5: #2 Blind Dreams (6-1)

Seems to be improving but she needs to show she wants to win. Jockey Gonzalo Nicholas had a big win on the turf last week and seems to understand this 4-year-old filly. Trainer Mike Pender has had a tough meet and due for some good luck. Inside and speed work well on this turf course when the rails are at 30 feet.

FIRST RACE: 1. Bentley’s Gone, 2. My Ole Bud, 3. Doyouknowsomething. LONG SHOT: Rob’s Golden Touch.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Quality Chimes, 2. Jackie K, 3. Mackenzies Moment. LONG SHOT: My Sweet Afleet.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Kiama, 2. Redressthebalance, 3. Zanbo. LONG SHOT: Spelling Again.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. I Heart You, 2. Vegas Bound, 3. Democracy Rules. LONG SHOT: Private Marina.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Tale of Papa Nick, 2. Sidepocket, 3. Gouyen. LONG SHOT: Chaulk O Lattey.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Seek Safe Harbor (best bet), 2. Champion Ris, 3. Swe Gee. LONG SHOT: Aguacita.

The strategy seems straight forward here for SEEK SAFE HARBOR (9-5) as apprentice Gonzalo Nicholas is going to take this 3-year-old filly from the gate and go as fast as he can for trainer Doug O’Neill, who is 32% with horses moving down to two classes . Nicholas and O’Neill are 3-for-5 together.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Wings of Mojave, 2. Cervaro, 3. Ransom Canyon. LONG SHOT: City State.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Divine Tale, 2. Euroclydon, 3. Prettypreciousheir. LONG SHOT: West Coast Storm.

No jockey has been hotter in America than Tyler Baze over the last three weeks and he stays with this 5-year-old mare DIVINE TALE (3-1). She finished second at the level in her first race in nearly a year and gets a furlong longer for her late kick. Surprisingly “turf” trainer Neil Drysdale is 26% with maiden claimers.

Santa Anita opinions for Thursday, April 9

Race 2: #4 Hurry Up Henry (5-2)

This horse scratched on Sunday to try his luck here. Was bred to be a decent sort out of Henrythenavigator, but just hasn’t delivered so trainer Phil D’Amato decided to geld him. Looks like some strong works since the gelding and D’Amato is 36% with jockey Elvis Trujillo.

==

Race 4: #4 Ink Well (9-5)

This son of English Channel is taking two drops here: in class and against straight 3-year-olds after facing older last time. He is bred to go this far and trainer Gary Stute employs apprentice Gonzalo Nicolas to get a 7-pound weight break.

Horse racing, Kentucky Derby, Santa Anita

What to watch for this week at Santa Anita

It’s Kentucky Derby week so that means a lot of top jockeys will be out of town and it means it’s time for the second-stringers to make some money while the big guys are gone.

You won’t see guys like Mike Smith, Gary Stevens, Corey Nakatani, Victor Espinoza and Rafael Bejarano will be in Louisville most of the week or thinking about Saturday’s race. (Note: Even though Bejarano was named on Wildcat Red some time back, it appears he was taken off.)

You could say they already started thinking about it as Espinoza, who will ride favored California Chrome in the Derby, was just 1-for-12 last week while Bejarano was 2-for-17 and Nakatani was 2-for-12.

Jockeys to watch for in Arcadia this week are Joe Talamo, who started the new spring/summer meet by going 5-for-20, followed by Edwin Maldonado (3-for-14), apprentice Drayden Van Dyke (3-for-15) and apprentice Gonzalo Nicholas (3-for-9).

Tyler Baze was 1-for-21 last week but look for a rebound by him and riders like Agapito Delgadillo (1-for-10) and Fernando Perez (1-for-10).

On the training side, Jerry Hollendorfer, Doug O’Neill, John Sadler, Ron Ellis and Bill Spawr all recorded two wins last weekend.

Santa Anita picks for Saturday, Jan. 4

FIRST RACE: 1. Graeme Crackerjack, 2. Affliction, 3. Only the Gold. LONG SHOT: Tuckers Point.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Taste Like Candy, 2. Crushed Velvet, 3. Awesome Baby. LONG SHOT: Uzziel.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Cyclometer, 2. Moonshine Bay, 3. Midnight Transfer. LONG SHOT: Color of Courage.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Know More, 2. Yankee Rebel, 3. Avare. LONG SHOT: Salutos Amigos.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Los Barrachos, 2. Bayern, 3. Hold Everything. LONG SHOT: El Nino Terrible.

Just a huge jock switch here on LOS BARRACHOS from apprentice Gonzalo Nicholas to Hall of Famer Mike Smith. Looks like trainer Richard Mandella just had this one out for some exercise in a tough maiden heat last time and now it’s go time.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Keezheekoni, 2. Divine Way, 3. Sheza Smoke Show. LONG SHOT: Sweet Bliss.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Cat Burglar (best bet), 2. Half Strike, 3. Northern Iowa. LONG SHOT: Appealing Tale.

CAT BURGLAR, a son of Unbridled’s Song, finished second in a Nov. 1 allowance race at Santa Anita. The date is important because that was one of the days of the “paved highway” in Arcadia and closers had no shot so a strong second needs to be upgraded. With a fair track in this race, this Bob Baffert-trainee may just have them over a barrel.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Jeranimo, 2. Slim Shadey, 3. Artic North. LONG SHOT: Dubai You X Y Z.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Seeking Asylum, 2. Mahalo Arturo, 3. The Mad Hungarian. LONG SHOT: Prospector Alley.
