Santa Anita selections for Wednesday, Oct. 29

FIRST RACE: 1. Whoyougonnacall (best bet), 2. Empire Cat, 3. Slapshot Man. LONG SHOT: Condition.

WHOYOUGONNACALL (3-1), a 2-year-old gelding, has shown speed in both of his races and now gets to go around two turns for the first time. He is a son of Ghostzapper and should relish the added distance. Trainer Phil D’Amato is 21% sprint-to-route and jockey Joe Talamo is 28% with D’Amato.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. West Riding, 2. Mangita, 3. Taste Like Candy. LONG SHOT: Yahilwa.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Bolo, 2. Diamond Majesty, 3. Secreto Primero. LONG SHOT: Clever Move.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Silk in Silver, 2. Magic Number, 3. Cayanna. LONG SHOT: Siberian Winter.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Inspeight of Us, 2. Partyin, 3. Doctor Susan. LONG SHOT: Blooming Hannah.

Since Leandro Mora has taken over for the suspended Doug O’Neill the barn has been winning at a 25% clip and the 2-year-olds have been firing. INSPEIGHT OF US (6-1), a daughter of Speightstown, has had some good works for her debut at Fairplex Park. Leading jockey Rafael Bejarano takes the mount.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Silver Torch, 2. Gallant Charm, 3. Watch It Buster. LONG SHOT: Crux.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Alberts Hope (15-1), 2. Hoppertunity, 3. Pimpernel. LONG SHOT: Diamond Bachelor.

One of the top 2-year-olds on the West Coast last summer, ALBERTS HOPE (15-1), a gelding, came back with a disappointing race last month. He only figures to improve off that effort for trainer Mike Puype and might surprise in here against some toughies.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Signature Cat, 2. Hot Lightning, 3. Dontpreachto Darcy. LONG SHOT: All Around Brown.

Santa Anita selections for Sunday, Sept. 28

Bad job of handicapping on Saturday. Talked myself out of a couple of horses, didn’t pay attention to some breeding I was looking for down the hill and let other opinions get in the way of picking horses. Sorry. Should have done better.

==

FIRST RACE: 1. Nueva Fortuna, 2. Speckles, 3. Quinnetta. LONG SHOT: Sultry Season.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Midnight Candy (best bet), 2. Bullwinkle Babe, 3. Yes Yes Baroness. LONG SHOT: Cora Elizabeth.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Storm Power, 2. Cherubim, 3. Kristo. LONG SHOT: Chief Lion.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Sweet Shop, 2. Son of War, 3. Mr. Excavator. LONG SHOT: Dench.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Zippingaroundtown, 2. Awesome Indy, 3. Heyyoucan. LONG SHOT: Cuzan.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Daddy’s Duo, 2. Zippinaroundtown, 3. Sister Hubert. LONG SHOT: Sheza Lucky Strike.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Bright Thought, 2. Big John B., 3. Starspangled Heat. LONG SHOT: Irish Surf.

Trainer Phil D’Amato has two horses in this race, BRIGHT THOUGHT  (5-1) and favored Big John B. We’re going to side with the longer price. This is D’Amato’s first time training this son of Hat Trick, who has won three of his four career races over this course. Play a good-sized exacta box.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Olivia’s Greatdane, 2. Girl Downstairs, 3. Megyns Gold. LONG SHOT: Blooming Hannah.

If trainer Bob Baffert has a first-time starter at 8-1 on the morning-line like OLIVIA’S GREATDANE, we’re going to take a swing. This daughter of Ghostzapper has two good works over the track, including a bullet one back. Jockey Victor Espinoza jumps on and he is 4-for-10 with Baffert over the last two years at Santa Anita.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Royal Temptress, 2. Genuine Quality, 3. Charlie’s Angle. LONG SHOT: Tangelo.

Santa Anita picks for Saturday, March 8

Remember first post is noon on Saturday for the 11-race card and your clocks move forward one hour Sunday morning at 2 a.m.

Tough card. Won’t be surprised if there is a Pick 6 carryover into Sunday.

FIRST RACE: 1. Satirical, 2. Beverly the Boss, 3. Faith Hope Love. LONG SHOT: Daylight’s Coming.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Van Fraassen, 2. Cowtownmary, 3. Snuggley Bear. LONG SHOT: Excessive Kid.

VAN FRAASSEN, a 3-year-old colt, makes his third career start and he finally gets to do what he’s bred to do: two turns on the grass. His sire is Giant’s Causeway out of a Woodman mare. What more could you ask for? He showed big improvement in his first start of the year and should show even more for trainer Doug O’Neill and jockey Mario Gutierrez.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Tribal Smoke, 2. Pass the Pico, 3. Quick Cielo. LONG SHOT: Talk of the Town.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Act, 2. Sing With Bling, 3. Rough Passage. LONG SHOT: Fercious.

ACT, a son of War Front, finished third in his career debut on Feb. 8 after showing speed and then tiring. Trainer John Sadler brings him right back to go a half-furlong further and jockey Gary Stevens sticks around for the ride.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Midnight Hawk, 2. Schoolofhardrocks, 3. Kristo. LONG SHOT: Unstoppable Colby.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Nashoba’s Gold, 2. Diversy Harbor, 3. Screen Goddess. LONG SHOT: Sushi Empire.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Sahara Sky, 2. Shakin It Up, 3. Midnight Transfer. LONG SHOT: Big Macher.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Za Approval (best bet), 2. Silentio, 3. Optimizer. LONG SHOT: Regally Ready.

ZA APPROVAL, a 6-year-old gelding, ran huge last fall when he finished second to Wise Dan in the Breeders’ Cup Mile over this turf course. Trainer Christophe Clement elects to begin the 2014 campaign in this spot. The son of Ghostzapper has four wins and five seconds in 11 tries at this distance. Joel Rosario retains the mount.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Will Take Charge, 2. Mucho Macho Man, 3. Game On Dude. LONG SHOT: Hear the Ghost.

==

10th RACE: 1. Secretsatmidnight, 2. Got Even, 3. Protocol. LONG SHOT: Chief Lion.

==

11TH RACE: 1. Abbey Vale, 2. Jules Journey, 3. Footbridge. LONG SHOT: Hawk’s Eyes
