Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Sunday, April 3

Preview: There was plenty of rain on Saturday so the chances of there being an turf racing is likely to be slim at best..

Race 3 – Tam

#2 Supreme Stature (9-2): This gelding broke his maiden over an off track at this distance so he could be tough here. The 3-year-old has the top Brisnet Class Rating and best speed at the distance. Jockey Ronnie Allen Jr. is 22% with trainer Ian Wilkes.

Race 4 – Tam

#5 Desert Summer (4-1): Leading jockey Antonio Gallardo usually rides for trainer Jamie Ness but eschews his entry here to ride this mare for trainer Saul Matos, who is 27% first off the claim.

Race 8 – Tam

#2 Refer (6-1): This will be the seventh different track this colt has run over in attempt to break his maiden. He seems to like this track with three good works coming into this. Trainer John Terranova is 23% with shippers.

Race 9 – Tam

#7 Spark Kit (6-1) (turf only): We’re hoping the turf course dries out in time for this race. Trainer Gerald Aschinger is 20% on the turf.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, March 5

Preview: Not the number of horses we are used to seeing on a Saturday card here, but there is some quality and trainers might be pointing for next weekend’s huge card.

==

Race 3 – Tam

#1 Lake Drive South (9-2)

As we have said before trainer Kathleen O’Connell has had a good meet and this horse has loved this track in the past with three wins in seven tries. He’s coming off a layoff but think he can come out winging.

==

Race 4 — Tam

#3 Persian Poet

Trainer Horacio Barbaran and jockey Samy Camacho have hit with two $100-plus horses in recent weeks, including one on Friday. Both horses showed nothing in their PPs just like this colt and it’s probably worth $2 across the board to find out.

Race 9 – Tam

#5 Liar’s Smoker (10-1) (turf only)

This filly is coming off a win over the course for trainer Gerald Aschinger, who is 21% with grass horses. Jockey Mike Allen has won twice with this filly at the meet.

==

Race 10 – Tam

#7 Winter d’Amour (4-1)

Trainer Anthony Granitz has been 30% in the past on the Tampa main track going two turns. This filly did just that breaking her maiden in Indiana and now she gets to do it again.

Tampa Bay opinions for Wednesday, Feb. 17

Preview: Pretty decent weekday card decent the fact that they will run five days this week. Jockey Antonio Gallardo came back to life over the weekend after a huge slump, but we knew that would happen.

==

Race 2: #10 Sylver Magic (7-2)

This filly is making her first start in more than a year. She has been training well and comes out of a key Gulfstream Park West key race. Trainer Gary Jackson is 20% with second time starters and 22% with Manoel Cruz.

 ==

Race 4: #10 Hi Ho Heels (turf only) (9-2)

I would be higher on this filly if it wasn’t for the post position draw. Trainer Gerald Aschinger is 4-for-8 with horses going a route of ground for the first time and he’s good first time turf.

 ==

Race 6: #2 El Santo (turf only) (3-1)

Trainer Efren Loza Jr. has been trying to get this gelding in the starting gate here a number of times, but bad draws have meant scratches. Loza is 42% with first time starters. He’s not as good on the turf, but there must be a reason he wants this 3-year-old on the grass.

==

Race 10: #4 Lady Allegra (turf only) (7-2)

This filly broke her maiden in Ireland and now surfaces here for trainer Arnaud Delacour, who is 20% with horses running off a 90-day layoff or more and 23% first-time Lasix. Red hot jockey Daniel Centeno is aboard.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Wednesday, Dec. 9

Jockeys and trainers are still sorting things out as this is just the fifth program of the new meet. Therefore, keep track of who is hot and who is not. Keep track of where the winning shippers are coming from and it might lead to big payoffs. Today’s card looks OK with the lowest field being seven in the sixth.

==

Race 4: #9 Dubious Bachelor (12-1)

Trainer Jason DaCosta is 36% with horses coming off a 46 to 90-day layoff and he is 33% with jockey Fernando De La Cruz. This gelding loves this track with an 8-2-2-1 record.

==

Race 7: #9 High Side (firm turf only) (3-1)

This gelding has been away since April but is 2-1-1-0 over with turf course. Trainer Gerald Aschinger is 21% with grass horses and 3-for-6 with jockey Ademar Santos, who must work a trip from the outside.

Race 2: #6 Dixie Deputy (9-5)

Trainer Jamie Ness and jockey Antonio Gallardo are a potent combination (27%). This 5-year-old has a win and second at the meet while taking a drop in class here. Gallardo will be able to control the race from the outside post.

==

Race 9: #4 Spark Kit (turf only) (12-1)

Trainer Gerald Aschinger has won his last four races at the meet and he has done well on the turf. He is 4-for-8 with first-time turfers and he has been trying to get this 5-year-old gelding on the grass two times in a row and it has been taken off.

Race 3: #5 Shatter (9-2)

Trainer Gerald Aschinger has won his last three races at Tampa. Just throw out that last race on the dirt because it was taken off the turf. Aschinger is 31% dirt to turf.

==

Race 6: #6 Reel Good Movie (6-1)

Jockey Fernando De La Cruz had his choice of several horses in this race and takes this 5-year-old mare. She closed last time to finish fourth by a length.

==

Race 7: #2 I’m a Big Hitter (turf only) (3-1)

This 3-year-old gelding showed speed last time out and finished second at a higher level. Takes a drop in here and leading jockey Antonio Gallardo stays aboard.

Race 6: #7 High Side (turf only) (6-1)

Trainer Gerald Aschinger is 2-for-6 with first-time turfers. This 4-year-old gelding also gets to try two turns for the first time off a second-place finish at 6 furlongs at this level.

Trainer M.C. Reardon is 24% with horses off a layoff of 90 days or more as this gelding hasn’t been seen since September at Suffolk Downs. This 4-year-old makes his turf debut and showed speed in two maiden races. The sire Wildcat Heir is 13% with first-time turf.
