Hollywood Park picks for Sunday, Dec. 22

Remember everything has to be paid out Sunday, the final day ever at Hollywood Park. Big carryover in the Pick Sux. Good luck.

FIRST RACE: 1. Aqua Revelation, 2. Maxx the Giant, 3. Wicked Finance. LONG SHOT: Apostle Paul.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Warren’s Assassin, 2. Woodlandsway, 3. Hugger of Trees. LONG SHOT: Sky Angel.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Highly Rated, 2. Love Tale, 3. Prettypriceygirl. LONG SHOT: Warren’s Internet.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Handsome Dennis, 2. Boss of Me, 3. Wistfullee Mine. LONG SHOT: Captain Salt.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. One Magical Girl, 2. Mia Isabel, 3. Warren’s Judy. LONG SHOT: Jet Blue Girl.

Jockey Kayla Stra has had a great Hollywood Park meet with limited opportunities and she scored on a bomber again on Friday. Here she picks up the mount on this 4-year-old filly ONE MAGICAL GIRL, trained by Northern California-based John Martin. However, this filly has won before at Hollywood Park and looks to do it again for a 28% winning trainer.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Moon Ride (best bet), 2. Miss Go Free, 3. Frannie’sspirttoo. LONG SHOT: Red Red Door.

Rafael Bejarano is trying to win another riding title and figures to be riding with zeal on the final day at Hollywood Park. Trainer Mike Puype puts blinkers on and drops this 3-year-old filly MOON RIDE to her lowest level ever looking to break her maiden.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Dixieland Blues, 2. Major Magic, 3. Gal has to Like It. LONG SHOT: Relentless Heat.

Hollywood Park picks for Friday, Oct. 20

Be sure to check the Hollywood Park changes on Friday morning. I think there will be a lot of races taken off the grass due to Thursday’s rain, but since it’s closing weekend maybe they won’t.

FIRST RACE: 1. Bosserette, 2. Sprague River, 3. Sergeant O’Rourke. LONG SHOT: South Sound

==

SECOND RACE: 1. For Emma, 2. Hot Bride, 3. Stunning Drama. LONG SHOT: Time for Angie.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Julio’s Gold, 2. Midnight Lady, 3. Sultry Season. LONG SHOT: Now Hope.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Giant Cowboy (best bet), 2. Rambling House, 3. Exponentially. LONG SHOT: Candiz.

Trainer Craig Dollase is one of the best getting horses ready for their first starts (38% winners from 26 tries the last two years) and he’s even better with debuting maiden claimers (60%). In GIANT COWBOY, we have a 2-year-old gelded son of Cowboy Cal. Expect speed with jockey Edwin Maldonado aboard. Dollase and Maldonado are a 27% combination the last two years.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Ransom Canyon, 2. Scorcher, 3. Gallant Charm. LONG SHOT: Londinium.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Congregationalist, 2. Awesome Indy, 3. Quick Cenizas. LONG SHOT: Mr Superstition.

This is strictly a pace and jockey play. There is a ton of speed in this race so it’s time to look for a closer. While CONGREGATIONALIST, a son of Songandaprayer, has been known to mix it up early we think with the drop in class and reuniting with jockey Rafael Bejarano will result in the veteran letting the other speed burn out and come rallying wide on the turn. Bejarano and trainer Vladimir Cerin are a 46% winning proposition the last two years at Hollywood Park.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Always a Chance, 2. Oscillator, 3. Tangerine Tickle. LONG SHOT: Flatter Thecowgirl.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Indygo Andy, 2. Burlister, 3. Starry Shark. LONG SHOT: America Rising.

Updated Hollywood Park picks for Saturday, Nov. 30

The track announced late Friday, that Saturday’s stakes races would remain on the turf and the others would be off the turf so handicap accordingly.

==

FIRST RACE: 1. Warren’s Tyler S., 2. Designer, 3. Tribe. LONG SHOT: Congregationalist.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Royal Banker, 2. Global View, 3. Pablo Del Monte. LONG SHOT: Aotearoa.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Money Cannon, 2. Derringer, 3. Too Fast to Pass. LONG SHOT: Kafister.

Pure and simple here as when trainer Adam Kitchingman has a live one he goes to jockey Edwin Maldonado. The duo is 10-for-20 in its last 20 races at Hollywood Park the last two years. Kitchingman claimed MONEY CANNON out of a winning race at this level and he returns to face straight 3-year-olds after facing older at Turf Paradise last time. DERRINGER comes out of a key race where three horses have come back to win.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Love In The Desert, 2. Clenor, 3. Savings Account. LONG SHOT: Full Ransom.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Scamalot, 2. This Cat’s Awesome, 3. Lucky Jack. LONG SHOT: Lucky J Lane.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Shoer Hugh, 2. Soul Candy, 3. Brown Boss. LONG SHOT: Apollo Ten.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Oh Billy Billy, 2. Pray Hard, 3. Toosmartbyhalf. LONG SHOT: Prince of Paris.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. D’Obession, 2. He’s a Dance Star, 3. Insideondoutside. LONG SHOT: Brokered.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Majestic Moment, 2. Gilligan, 3. Cook Inlet. LONG SHOT: Russel’s Run.

Trainer Victor Garcia is 6-for-10 (60%) first off the claim and he has enough confidence here with this $8,000 purchase MAJESTIC MOMENT to move him up one level. This 4-year-old gelding broke his maiden over this surface last year against tougher plus there is a good work showing since the claim.

==

TENTH RACE: 1. Magic Daddy (best bet), 2. Mary Helen’s Storm, 3. America Rising. LONG SHOT: Copote’s Royalty.

Trainer Bob Baffert might be giving one away here as MAGIC DADDY, a 3-year-old colt, has shown speed against straight maidens but he drops him all the way down to the bottom in a $20,000 maiden claimer. Look for a wire-to-wire effort here at short odds under jockey Martin Garcia.

==

SEVEN RACE: 1. Summer Front (best bet), 2. Silentio, 3. Winning Prize. LONG SHOT: Bright Thought.

Just throw SUMMER FRONT’s last race at Keeneland which was moved from the turf to the Polytrack. When you do that he is 2-for-3 on the grass this year and Eastern-based trainer Christophe Clement and jockey Joe Bravo aren’t coming out for the Thanksgiving leftovers. The son of War Front ran over this course last November (sixth in Hollywood Derby) so he is familiar with the surroundings. Will be closing from the back on the turn.

Hollywood Park picks for Friday, Nov. 22 (updated)

They will be off the turf again on Friday at Hollywood Park.

FIRST RACE: 1. Go Black Tie, 2. Hoppertunity (SCRATCHED), 3. Hold Everything. LONG SHOT: Candy Boy.

Trainer Craig Dollase knows how to get a first-time starter ready (42%) and he’s good with 2-year-olds (29%) like GO BLACK TIE. Here he sends the son of Borrego around two turns in his initial run and Dollase puts jockey Edwin Maldonado aboard and they have good numbers together.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Poshsky, 2. Quick Cielo, 3. Tommo. LONG SHOT: Ancient Stone.

Don’t forget this race is off the turf.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Sidepocket Champ, 2. Wonderful Union, 3. Burlister. LONG SHOT: Second Proposal.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Blunderstone, 2. Fashion Plate, 3. Morning Star. LONG SHOT: Afsana.

Trainer Eoin Harty does pretty well with stretching horses out and this daughter of Birdstone named BLUNDERSTONE is bred to run all day. She showed a little bit of interest while finishing fourth at 7 furlongs. Going two turns should be right up her alley.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Rovenna, 2. Meinertzhageni, 3. Prayer Be Mine. LONG SHOT: Feature Attraction.

ACCOMMODATION would have been my pick in this race off his impressive maiden score, but he is “stuck” and likely to scratch Friday morning. Note: as of 10:42 a.m. Accommodation isn’t scratched. My new order: 1. Accommodation, 2. Rovenna, 3. Meinertzhageni, 4. Prayer Be Mine. LONG SHOT: Feature Attraction. NEVER MIND ACCOMMODATION IS SCRATCHED AS EXPECTED. BACK TO ORIGINAL PICKS. GEEZ.

THIRD RACE: 1. Georgia, 2. Arethusa, 3. Pleasant Mix. LONG SHOT: Be Proud.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Enterprising (best bet), 2. I’ll Wrap It Up, 3. Life’s Journey. LONG SHOT: Go Black Tie.

ENTERPRISING, a son of Elusive Quality, was given a race last time in his debut by jockey Gary Stevens and trainer Tom Proctor. Now the 2-year-old gets two turns on the turf, something he should enjoy. Look for an improved effort.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Coco de Carchy, 2. Puff Pastry, 3. Classic Journey. LONG SHOT: Make More Money.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Lilly’s Perfect, 2. Perfecta, 3. Distant Image. LONG SHOT: Tebowing.

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Pimpernal, 2. Big Medicine Man, 3. Three Point Luke. LONG SHOT: Fulmerized.

PIMPERNAL has been working out with Streaming, who was an easy winner for trainer Bob Baffert in her debut on Friday.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. J K’s Mischief, 2. Our Pure Creation, 3. Golden Production. LONG SHOT: Lucky Student.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Magic Number, 2. Soul Searcher, 3. Red Red Door. LONG SHOT: Silver Gun Girl.

It isn’t often that apprentice jockey Gonzalo Nicolas is a key to a rcae, but he just might be in this $20,000 maiden claimer. Nicolas jumps off two other horses to keep the mount on MAGIC NUMBER, a daughter of Hat Trick. The filly finished a strong second at this level and distance (7 furlongs) one back and could be the one to beat.

THIRD RACE: 1. Kobe, 2. Shared Belief, 3. Papa Turf. LONG SHOT: Brother Soldier.

==

RACE 4: 1. High Jinks, 2. English Crossing, 3. Ricspretentiousgal. LONG SHOT: Meltrib.

Trainer A C Avila puts blinkers on this 4-year-old filly from Brazil, HIGH JINKS. Avila is 57% (4-of-7) with this move and he puts speed jockey Edwin Maldonado aboard. That should mean she will be more forwardly placed here as she drops into a claimer for the first time.

==

RACE 5: 1. She’s a Go Girl, 2. Say Say, 3. Tribal Peace. LONG SHOT: Tribal Dress.

Jockey Edwin Maldonado is a key here, too. He takes over for apprentice Orozco on this $16,000 claimer SHE’S A GO GIRL for trainer Adam Kitchingman. The jockey/trainer combination is an amazing 53% at Hollywood Park the last two years in 19 attempts. This 3-year-old filly is also coming out of a race where the winner, Sallyana, won a race on Friday so it could be a very live race.

==

RACE 6: 1. Serene Melody, 2. Shrilanka, 3. Majestic Minister. LONG SHOT: Sealington.

==

RACE 7: 1. Five Palms, 2. Chief Lion, 3. Forest Boy. LONG SHOT: Street Status.

Trainer Bob Baffert loves FIVE PALMS.

==

RACE 8: 1. Zia Zia Zia, 2. Miss Lucky Sevens, 3. Scherzinger,. LONG SHOT: Llandudno.

This 3-year-old filly ZIA ZIA ZIA comes out of a tough minor stakes at Santa Anita where the first- and third-place have already come back to win. This daughter of Dehere finished fifth at odds of 28-1 coming down the hill. She shortens up a half-furlong here and has two good works for trainer Mike Puype at Hollywood Park.

Trainer Jeff Bonde has some pretty strong numbers with first-time turfers (31%) and in turf sprints (27%) and that’s exactly what he does with this 3-year-old filly THE MAGIC STONE. She showed speed on the dirt at Santa Anita and will likely try to go to the front under jockey Edwin Maldonado here.

Breeders’ Cup 2014: Fair Santa Anita track needed both days

@Jeff_Nahill on Twitter

First, let me state, I enjoyed covering almost every minute of last weekend’s Breeders’ Cup.

Put me in the category of the Breeders’ Cup should be in California every year —- whether it be Santa Anita, or maybe the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club some year down the line. I think the weather outweighs a lot of negatives.

Then, again, I understand that a historic track like Churchill Downs should also be in the rotation every three or four years. As for the East, forget about it. No more, Monmouth Park monsoons. I really don’t care if owner Mike Repole keeps his horses in Todd Pletcher’s barn in New York because The Cup won’t come back to Belmont Park.

The one negative in my mind for Santa Anita is its racing surface.

I found Santa Anita president Keith Brackpool’s comments to Ed Zieralski of the San Diego Union-Tribune to be out of touch.

“I haven’t slept in six days,” Brackpool said. “Look, we’ve been blessed with the weather. We had great fields, great races, fair races. Standing here in the paddock before the last, this is the best Breeders’ Cup I’ve seen in years.”

Keith, did u watch Friday’s races? Or even Thursday’s races? What was fair about them?

When I arrived on Thursday, it was obvious the Santa Anita track was a paved highway for inside speed. The jockeys took notice and acted accordingly.

On Friday, it was more of the same. Would the winners still have won on a fair track? Maybe, but we’ll never know.

According to at least one media report I read, BC officials were concerned and told Santa Anita officials that. The affect was immediate, as those of us who were still working after the races on late Friday afternoon saw with our own eyes. The tractors were out working the inside of the track. They didn’t stop for a reported 10 hours.

Saturday’s surface was fair to all horses, speed types and closers. The best horses won. There’s no doubt in my mind.

The problem is that handicappers, people who bet their money and make this game go round and round, didn’t know what to expect until they saw some results.

Saturday’s track should have been Thursday and Friday’s track.

Trainer Bob Baffert said a week before the event he was concerned about the surface because it changed on a “day-to-day basis.” He was right and Santa Anita needs to take measures to have a fair surface all the time and especially at Breeders’ Cup 2014.

Surfaces can’t change from day to day. That’s a recipe for injuries and deaths.

Unfortunately, BC 2013 had two horses suffer broken legs. Centralintelligence suffered one on Friday and had surgery on Sunday. Baffert’s nice 2-year-old filly Secret Compass suffered one in the Juvenile Fillies on Saturday and had to be euthanized.

Del Mar track officials and trainers have told me through the years that their biggest fears for catastrophic injuries always came at the beginning of the meet because horses were changing surfaces from Hollywood Park to the seaside oval.

Did Santa Anita’s working of the track surface overnight result in Secret Compass’ death and jockey’s John Velasquez’s injuries (he was aboard the filly and had to undergo emergency surgery to have his spleen removed)? We’ll probably never know, but it’s something to ponder.

I hope to be at BC 31 in 2014 at Santa Anita. I also hope the track is safe and fair.

Now for a little bookkeeping from last week as we got behind on posting the results of our picks:

Thursday’s top choice winners: 3 (Pasalm Sixteen $6, first race; Sinfully $7.40, third; Koast $8.40, fifth)

Thursday’s second and third choice winners: 0

Thursday’s long shot winners: 2 (Majestic City $32.40, sixth; Bright Town $18.80, eighth)

Santa Anita/Breeders’ Cup picks for Friday, November 1

ARCADIA

Bias alert! Bias alert!

Keep a close eye on the main track for Friday’s early races because Thursday’s races were run in wire-to-wire fashion, except the last race when the leader still finished a strong second.

It brings back memories of last year’s Breeders’ Cup when there was a pronounced speed bias. The smart jockeys will smell it out so watch the races very closely.

The word around the track is that the inside of the track was “scrapped” on Wednesday. For most of the fall meet the track has seemed fair, but many jockeys didn’t stay on the rail. They will on Friday, if Thursday is any indication.

We’ll see.

FIRST RACE: 1. He’s Had Enough, 2. Omega Star, 3. Pure Loyalty. LONG SHOT: Yankee Rebel.

HE’S HAD ENOUGH was on the Triple Crown trail earlier this year facing the likes o f Orb, Flashback, Violence and Shanghai Bobby, who he finished to in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last year. The son of Tapit has been off since late March and trainer Doug O’Neill tries something new with him, running down the hill on the turf course. If he’s 90 percent, he might just outclass this field.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Got Even, 2. Heir of Storm, 3. Door’s Open. LONG SHOT: Newfound Gold.

This could be an all-Peter Miller exacta as he trains the top two. I was leaning to HEIR OF STORM, a son of Wildcat Heir, who gets a barn switch to the red-hot Miller (11 wins at the meet) until the speed bias showed up on Thursday. GOT EVEN has speed and he gets Joel Rosario to ride. HEIR OF STORM is trying dirt for the first time in his career after synthetic and grass attempts. Miller puts the blinkers on and Eastern-based jockey Jose Lezcano jumps aboard.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Cinmars Dance, 2. Tamarando, 3. Life Is a Joy. LONG SHOT: Electric Eddie.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Harlington’s Rose, 2. Moving Desert, 3. Cal Gal. LONG SHOT: Smoove It.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Procurement, 2. Gervinho, 3. Gabriel Charles. LONG SHOT: Dry Summer.

PROCUREMENT, a 3-year-old son of Milwaukee Brew, has lost to a few of these before, but he has two wins over this course and one victory at this distance of 1 1/8 mile on the grass. Jockey Gary Stevens keeps the mount and the way he is riding the odds are well worth a shot. We think his downhill trip last time was just a prep for this spot.

==

Breeders’ Cup races begin here.

SIXTH RACE: 1. Ever Rider, 2. Suns Out Guns Out, 3. Commander, 4. Worldly. LONG SHOT: Old Time Hockey.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Giovanni Boldin1, 2. Wilshire Boulevard, 3. Bobby’s Kitten, 4. Bon Accord. LONG SHOT: Aotearoa.
