Del Mar, Horse racing

Del Mar picks for Friday, Aug. 16

Don’t forget there will only be seven races today due a lack of sunlight with the 4 p.m. first post.

The Pick Six will start with Race 2 and there is a carryover of more than $100,000.

Trainer Doug O’Neill continued his hot streak on Thursday with wins by Journey On ($13.40) in the third race and Cat Pirate ($22) in the fourth. O’Neill has now won 10 races in the last seven racing days so be on alert for all of his horses.

FIRST RACE: 1. Salah Champ, 2. Hustlin Nu, 3. Bob Consultation. LONG SHOT: Hey Yup.

This son of Benchmark pressed the pace in his seasonal debut, but faded in his first race since December. Look for a better effort on the drop today.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Crimson Giant, 2. Field Report, 3. Ballard Ruler. LONG SHOT: Hotradamus.

CRIMSON GIANT comes from the low-profile Charles Stutts barn and comes out of a deceptive five-furlong turf spring at Hollywood Park. He drops back into the Cal-bred ranks and could be an upsetter here at a price.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Yodel Up a Storm, 2. Grammy Big Mouth, 3. Frandontjudge. LONG SHOT: Marla Hooch.

Trainer John Sadler claimed this daughter out a nose loss in her career debut at Hollywood Park. She showed early speed and Victor Espinoza keeps the mount. Sadler is 25 percent first off the claim.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Sealington, 2. Intoxicating Move, 3. Humor Me. LONG SHOT: Iconic Spirit.

This second-time starter closed a little ground in her debut, but she was bred to route (by Harlington out of a Storm Cat mare). Trainer Leonard Powell has been sensational with four wins out of five starts at the meet.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. ROMANCE IS SOSA (best bet), 2. China Prince, 3. Chicsdigtheshark. LONG SHOT: Bobo.

ROMANCE IS SOSA is coming out of a key race on the Northern California fair circuit for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Leading rider Rafael Bejarano takes the mount. The pair are 31 percent together.

==

SIXTH RACE (Sandy Blue Handicap): 1. Macha, 2. Oscar Party, 3. Pontchatrain. LONG SHOT: Miss Lucky Sevens.

Don’t look now but it’s that duo of Hollendorfer and Bejarano again. MACHA drops out the Grade I American Oaks, where she showed early speed. PONCHATRAIN was an impressive maiden winner last time out and deserves consideration on a class raise.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Hair On Fire, 2. Proud Bok, 3. I’m No Patsy. LONG SHOT: Little Bit Cactus.

HAIR ON FIRE drops back into a maiden claimer after giving the turf a try three straight times. Joe Talamo takes the ride for this speedy daughter of Bernstein.
