Santa Anita opinions for Sunday, June 5

Preview: We say goodbye to the hillside turf course as renovations start this week for the fall meet, which includes the Breeders’ Cup. There are four races on it today. There are five races on the dirt and some trainers to think twice about are Bill Spawr (1-for-15), Kristin Mulhall (1-13), Jeff Bonde (0-12) and Eric Kruljac (0-11).

Race 4: #5 Fruity (6-1): This filly came running in her second try down the hill and now trainer Simon Callaghan puts the blinkers on, a move he is 29% with. The 4-year-old should come running in the stretch for new jockey Flavien Prat, who is 29% with Callaghan.

Race 6: #2 Airlite (9-2): Here we are again down the hill with that man Flavien Prat. He rides most of trainer Richard Mandella’s horses and Mandella is 4-for-10 with horses second time on the grass. The 3-year-old finished third in his debut and should only improve.

Race 9: #8 Infinite Magic (6-1): This gelding is in the care of trainer Ted West for the first time and he is 31% with horses in that situation. Yes, Flavien Prat is aboard. The gelding has a second and third over the course and is cutting back from a route race.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. #2 Big Tire (12-1), 2. Brimstoned, 3. Rockport Kat. LONG SHOT: The Gomper.
 “Eikleberry off” has become a play recently as the jockey isn’t riding locally anymore and a couple of bombs have come in over the last week with new jockeys aboard. Such is the case here as Santiago Gonzalez jumps back on for trainer Mark Glatt and they are a 23% combination.
==
EIGHTH RACE: 1. Mac Daddy Mac, 2. On Fire, 3. Dr. Dorr. LONG SHOT: Jury.

Race 4 – GPW

#5 Never Give In (8-1): This gelding faced winners for the first time in his last race and finished third. Trainer Kathleen O’Connell is 20% with sprinters and she stretches this one out to 7 furlongs.

#5 Expect Some Dreams (20-1): This 2-year-old filly finished third at this level at 7-1 for trainer Jane Cibelli, cuts back in distance and gains services of Antonio Gallardo, the Tampa riding champ. I just don’t get this morning-line.

==

Race 9 – GPW

#6 Paddy O’Wagon (turf only) (7-2): The son of Paddy O’Prado, this 2-year-old makes his South Florida debut off a couple of decent races at Laurel and Monmouth Park. Trainer Jane Cibelli and jockey Antonio Gallardo team up again and they are 30% together.

==
FOURTH RACE: 1. #6 Classy Chick (8-1), 2. Sayitright Kat, 3. Sidepocket Bet. LONG SHOT: Catalina Bonita.

This filly had a ton of trouble in her last at Los Alamitos and resurfaces here. Trainer Eric Kruljac is 29% when going sprint-route-sprint. Plus Kruljac and jockey Corey Natatani have already won a couple of races this week.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Byquist, 2. Annie’s Candy, 3. Paynes Prairie. LONG SHOT: Found Money.
==
SIXTH RACE: 1. #9 The Gomper (9-2), 2. Forest Blue, 3. Dallas Skyline. LONG SHOT: Seve’s Road.

This 3-year-old has been getting better and may have found a home on the turf off his second place finish last time. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is 23% with jockey Rafael Bejarano, who must navigate a course from the outside.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Ultimate Holiday, 2. French Press, 3. Black Betsy. LONG SHOT: Pearl de Vere.
==
EIGHTH RACE: 1. #3 FANTICOLA (5-2) BEST BET, 2. Emotional Kitten, 3. Personal Diary. LONG SHOT: Gusto Dolce.

This 5-year-old has hit her stride this year for trainer Phil D’Amato and once again she finds a race devoid of speed. Look for her to take the lead out of the gate and go wire-to-wire for jockey Joe Talamo.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Expo and Fig, 2. Nextdoorneighbor, 3. Secret Command. LONG SHOT: Biltmore Boogie.
Secret Command

Santa Anita opinions for Friday, May 8

Race 1: #5 Gosofar (3-1)

Cost $100K at auction earlier this year and last work was a good one. Trainer Adam Kitchingman is 20% with first-time starters and the sire Aragorn is 12% first time out.

==

Race 5: #1 Elimination Round (5-1)

This 4-year-old filly showed improvement in her second start, and first down the hill. Trainer Eric Kruljac is an amazing 53% (8-for-15) second time on the grass.

==

Race 8: #9 Ipray (3-1)

This 3-year-old filly finished third in her career debut despite a poor start. With a better start for red-hot trainer Phil D’Amato it might put her in the winner’s circle on the class drop. D’Amato and jockey Tiago Pereira are 35% the last two years at Santa Anita.

Santa Anita early opinions for Sunday, March 8

Working the desk last night and time change have done me in for full picks today. Check me out on twitter @Jeff_Nahill to see if I like anything else earlier on the card. Thanks for reading.

==

Race 6: #8 Pay the Fine (8-1)

The son of Square Eddie showed speed and faded in his debut last month. He should only improve off that effort and the Doug O’Neill barn seems to be heating up. Jockey Elvis Trujillo takes the mount.

==

Race 9: #1 Paythebank (12-1)

Trainer Eric Kruljac sends this gelding around two turns off a run down the hill. He put a good work into the son of Lemon Drop Kid (fastest of 138) and drops into a maiden claimer for the first time.

Del Mar selections for Sunday, Nov. 9 (Bing Crosby Season)

FIRST RACE: 1. Pulla Train, 2. My Slew, 3. Frensham. LONG SHOT: Oligarch.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Gold Medallion, 2. Graeme Crackerjack, 3. Harlington Night. LONG SHOT: Squawk One.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Guyfromtheskyfive, 2. Roper, 3. Sonic Fever. LONG SHOT: Bound for Heaven.

==

FOURTH RACE: Sizzlin’ Joe, 2. Miceli, 3. Los Bambinos. LONG SHOT: Tigah.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Home Maid Brownie (best bet), 2. Siena Grace, 3. Sheza Dish. LONG SHOT: Bench Ruling.

It’s probably a safe bet jockey Martin Pedroza, who won three races on Saturday’s card, had his choice of the two Eric Kruljac-trained horses in this race and he chose HOME MAID BROWNIE (3-1), a daughter of Big Brown. She ran a big second at this level over the Polytrack in August.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Rosa Divina, 2. Southern Owah, 3. Bold Decision. LONG SHOT: Sunday Stroll.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Charlie’s Angel, 2. Feline Forum, 3. Colonel Joan. LONG SHOT: Kadesha.

CHARLIE’S ANGEL (3-1), a 3-year-old French import, makes her second start in the U.S. She finished fifth at Santa Anita after a slow start for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. She gets Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith and Smith is a 26% combo with Hollendorfer.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Tribal Gal, 2. Swiss Lake Yodeler, 3. Sweet Marini. LONG SHOT: Warren’s Veneda.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. The Custodian, 2. Synnin, 3. Itsgettinhotinhere. LONG SHOT: Easy Ten.

Santa Anita picks for Thursday, March 20

FIRST RACE: 1. Silk in Silver, 2. Kid Rollins, 3. Bully’s Magic Girl. LONG SHOT: Puligny.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Wine Country Wanda (best bet), 2. Itsabeautifulday, 3. Visions of Candy. LONG SHOT: Cleverly Beverly.

Trainer Eric Kruljac rarely cranks them up first time and WINE COUNTRY WANDA, a daughter of Stormy Jack, got off to a slow start in her debut, but she came on in the stretch, just like her sire use to do. Apprentice jockey Drayden Van Dyke (4-for-18 last week) will get an extra furlong to work with here.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Candy for Debbie, 2. Harlington Night, 3. Mind the Master. LONG SHOT: Pulpit’s Express.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Our Glitter Ball, 2. Tickle Again, 3. Ryderroo. LONG SHOT: Betty Bing Bing.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Hugh Knew, 2. Lamazone, 3. An Unusual Group. LONG SHOT: Carnival Lights.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Heir of Storm, 2. Omega Star, 3. War Academy. LONG SHOT: Circle the Moon.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Monument, 2. Rangi, 3. Incline Village. LONG SHOT: Thunder Rode.

Jockey Gary Stevens very rarely rides for leading trainer John Sadler (four times in the last two years), but this is his second mount for the pair on the card. This 4-year-old, MONUMENT, showed a bit of spark in the stretch in his first try down the hill last time and with that experience it could propel him into the winner’s circle here.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Raja’s Rose, 2. Alice Roadtrain, 3. Divine Josephine. LONG SHOT: Royal Shaft.

Santa Anita picks for Monday, Jan. 20 (updated)

FIRST RACE: 1. Sister Glady Oh La, 2. Gittel, 3. Holiday N Newport. LONG SHOT: Fiesta Express.

SISTER GLADY OH LA gave an even effort sprinting in her return to the races last month and now she gets to do what she wants: route. She has won three times at this distance, granted it was in Northern California, but she has a nose for the finish line.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Indianapolis, 2. Beach Hut, 3. Papa Turf. LONG SHOT: Elmonte Cristo (SCRATCHED). New long shot: Rockin Home.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Chief Lion, 2. San Onofre, 3. Brokered. LONG SHOT: Got Even.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Bury Pacer, 2. Closet E, 3. Big Medicine Man. LONG SHOT: Cowtownmary.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Senator Bob, 2. Dunmore East, 3. Zuboff. LONG SHOT: Half Dome Dude.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Dixieland Blues, 2. Koast (SCRATCHED), 3. Relentless Heat. LONG SHOT: Insideondoutside. Mew order: 1. Dixieland Blues, 2. Relentless Heat, 3. Macias. LONG SHOT: Insideondoutside.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Cause Ur My Babe, 2. Capers N Wine, 3. Magic Spot. LONG SHOT: Sixy Eddie.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Pulpit’s Express, 2. Major Truth, 3. Pulla Train. LONG SHOT: Wings of Mojave.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Singleinthelast (best bet), 2. Katy’s Plum, 3. Grammy Times Six. LONG SHOT: Mean Emma Jean.

Trainer Eric Kruljac drops SINGLEINTHELAST into a maiden claimer for the first time and he’s 30% with that move. On top of that he puts apprentice Drayden Vandyke aboard so look for a send job from the outside post and she should have enough speed to clear.
