Santa Anita opinions for Saturday, April 11

Race 4: #4 Stylistic (10-1)

The 5-year-old mare returns after an 8-month layoff, but her works coming in to this race look outstanding for trainer Donald Warren. The sire Cyclotron is 21% with first-time turfers and we expect jockey Elvis Trujillo to have her forwardly placed down the hill.

==

Race 7: #9 Party Rock (4-1)

Trainer Bob Baffert drops this daughter of Good Journey into a claimer for the first time. When he does that he wins 38% of the time. Jockey Martin Garcia had a choice of another Baffert entrant and chose this one.

Santa Anita opinions for Thursday, April 9

Race 2: #4 Hurry Up Henry (5-2)

This horse scratched on Sunday to try his luck here. Was bred to be a decent sort out of Henrythenavigator, but just hasn’t delivered so trainer Phil D’Amato decided to geld him. Looks like some strong works since the gelding and D’Amato is 36% with jockey Elvis Trujillo.

==

Race 4: #4 Ink Well (9-5)

This son of English Channel is taking two drops here: in class and against straight 3-year-olds after facing older last time. He is bred to go this far and trainer Gary Stute employs apprentice Gonzalo Nicolas to get a 7-pound weight break.

Race 6: #6 Hurry Up Henry (8-1)

Was bred to be a decent sort out of Henrythenavigator, but just hasn’t delivered so trainer Phil D’Amato decided to geld him. Looks like some strong works since the gelding and D’Amato is 36% with jockey Elvis Trujillo.

==

Race 8: #1 Full Ransom (20-1)

Won a grass stakes as a 2-year-old, but has floundered since. She is making her third start off a long layoff which may do the trick for the combination of Jim Cassidy and jockey Santiago Gonzalez. The key here is she is coming out of a race that has already produced two winners.

Santa Anita opinions for Thursday, April 2

Editor’s note: Hope to get back to full handicapping by Saturday. Suffice to say, someone close to me has been sick and had surgery recently and I’ve been dealing this for a long time. Now it’s on the road to recovery.

==

Race 4: #2 Badasmywifeletsmeb

The gelding is taking a drop in class after showing speed against better. The gelding has won over the course before for trainer Barry Abrams, who turns to jockey Elvis Trujillo to take over.

==

Race 8: #3 War Destiny

Trainer John Sadler tried to get this gelding on the grass last time but it was taken off. The 5-year-old pressed the pace on the dirt and I love War Fronts on the grass. Jockey Tyler Baze, who is 23% with Sadler, takes the reins.

Santa Anita selections for Friday, March 20

FIRST RACE: 1. Blind Dreams, 2. Scattercash, 3. Zippinaroundtown. LONG SHOT: Valentine’s Reward.

Trainer Doug O’Neill claimed this 4-year-old filly BLIND DREAMS (5-2) last time out and moves her up a level. O’Neill is 17% first off the claim and 19% with horses making their second off the layoff. The daughter of Kodiak Kowboy goes two turns for the first time so we’re thinking that’s why O’Neill claimed her.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Reno Rebel, 2. My Samurai Warrior, 3. My Secret Affair. LONG SHOT: Muchos Besos.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. In Dad’s Honor 2. Twelve Folds, 3. Rosewhitenblue. LONG SHOT: Mum’s Truckee.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Ain’t No Other, 2. Trelawny, 3. El Commodore. LONG SHOT: Success Rate.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Taste Like Candy, 2. Grandiose Tactics, 3. Intoxicating Move. LONG SHOT: My Sweet Addiction.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Caradini, 2. Enchanted Fortune, 3. Pure. LONG SHOT: Taylor Lane.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Guggenheim, 2. Bobby Z Man, 3. Presidentsky. LONG SHOT: Pepnic.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Ruby N Diamonds (best bet), 2. Divine Tale, 3. Euroclydon. LONG SHOT: Secret Appeal.

RUBY N DIAMONDS (4-1) showed high speed at this level last time, but just couldn’t finish. The 4-year-old gets a half-furlong shorter and jockey change to Elvis Trujillo. May take them wire-to-wire.

Santa Anita early opinions for Sunday, March 8

Working the desk last night and time change have done me in for full picks today. Check me out on twitter @Jeff_Nahill to see if I like anything else earlier on the card. Thanks for reading.

==

Race 6: #8 Pay the Fine (8-1)

The son of Square Eddie showed speed and faded in his debut last month. He should only improve off that effort and the Doug O’Neill barn seems to be heating up. Jockey Elvis Trujillo takes the mount.

==

Race 9: #1 Paythebank (12-1)

Trainer Eric Kruljac sends this gelding around two turns off a run down the hill. He put a good work into the son of Lemon Drop Kid (fastest of 138) and drops into a maiden claimer for the first time.

Santa Anita selections for Sunday, Feb. 8 (UPDATED)

FIRST RACE: 1. Blooming Hannah (best bet), 2. Pocketfullofgreen, 3. Herecomeskat. LONG SHOT: Stunning Taste.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Amnesia, 2. Mark of a Gem, 3. Camyrn Kate. LONG SHOT: Free Money.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Miss Centerfold (SCRATCHED), 2. Wild At Heart, 3. Never Ends. LONG SHOT: Dad’s Princess. New picks: 1. Wild At Heart, 2. Never Ends, 3. Dad’s Princess. LONG SHOT: By the Shore.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Radiant Journey, 2. Zuzu’s Petals, 3. Yana. LONG SHOT: Twelve Folds.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Bayonet, 2. Scandal, 3. Vendita. LONG SHOT: Conquest Artura.

BAYONET (12-1), a 3-year-old filly, makes her turf debut, but the real key is the distance. By Colonel John, she should enjoy the added distance as trainer Peter Eurton us 20% with horses off a 61-180-day layoff and he is 20% with jockey Elvis Trujillo.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Quality Plan (SCRATCHED), 2. Night Badger, 3. Flat Gone. LONG SHOT: Casual Attire. New picks: 1. Niht Badger, 2. Flat Gone, 3. Como Mi Padre. LONG SHOT: Casual Attire.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Sir Barclay, 2. Rolo Tamaci, 3. Valdirone. LONG SHOT: I B Mike.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Birdlover, 2. Indecise, 3. Fanticola. LONG SHOT: Global Hottie (SCRATCHED). New long shot: Sky Treasure.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Brother Soldier, 2. This Time I Win, 3. Coolington. LONG SHOT: Sum Midnight Star.

This 4-year-old BROTHER SOLDIER (8-1) drops from a claiming race to a starter allowance, where he finished third. There have been two nice works since and he may be sitting on a good one for trainer Richard Baltas and jockey Flavian Prat.

Santa Anita selections for Saturday, Feb. 7

FIRST RACE: 1. Signature Cat, 2. Cheap O Charlie, 3. Ministers Prayer. LONG SHOT: Roper.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Industry Leader, 2. Pray Hard, 3. Love Forever. LONG SHOT: American Act.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Ghost of Navigator, 2. Cyrus Alexander, 3. Nob Hill. LONG SHOT: Scorpious.

Barn has always been high on this son of Mineshaft, but GHOST OF NAVIGATOR (30-1) just hasn’t put it together. This is a tough maiden heat, but worth a stab at the price for trainer Ron Ellis and jockey Tiago Perez. The 3-year-old has shown improved works and should be worth a couple of bucks on win end and underneath the favorites in the exacta.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Shanty Irish (best bet), 2. Go Trumpy Go, 3. Young and Hungry. LONG SHOT: Perfect Temptation.

Trainer Mike Puype must want to get this Cal-bred SHANTY IRISH (8-1) on the grass pretty bad as he runs in an open MSW. Breeding says yes to the grass. Pressed that pace in debut, has good work coming into race down the hill and jockey Elvis Trujillo sticks.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Firing Line, 2. Dortmund, 3. Rock Shandy. LONG SHOT: Tizcano.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Cautious Giant, 2. Whine for Wine, 3. Pulling G’s. LONG SHOT: Kristo.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Quadrivium, 2. Finnegans Wake, 3. Patrioticandproud. LONG SHOT: Dyanmic Sky.

==

EIGHT RACE: 1. Bronzo, 2. Shared Belief, 3. California Chrome. LONG SHOT: Tonito M.

Yes, this is a tough spot for BRONZO (20-1) with the likes of Hoppertunity, Shared Belief and California Chrome in the race, but trainer Neil Drysdale has been quoted as saying the longer the better for this Chile-import. Jockey Gary Stevens got familiar with him last time and hopefully learned something.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Arethusa, 2. Our Little Hen, 3. Dakota Kid. LONG SHOT: Kyiaki.

FIRST RACE: 1. Rhett’s Image, 2. Signature Cat, 3. Lucky Vintage. LONG SHOT: Wildly Brilliant.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Trash Talkin, 2. Prohibition Repeal, 3. Seedsandstemsagain. LONG SHOT: Alfiero.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Lindante, 2. Do Some Magic, 3. Forest Chatter. LONG SHOT: He’s On His Toes.

Just throw out that last turf sprint at Del Mar by LINDANTE (20-1). This 4-year-old beat open maidens coming down the hill in October to break his maiden and also has a third on the course. Jockey Joe Talamo stays aboard for trainer Jerry Fanning.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Chief of Staff, 2. Stormin Trick, 3. Vodka Texted You. LONG SHOT: The Grumbler.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Heat the Rocks (best bet), 2. Light One, 3. Sheer Pleasure. LONG SHOT: Patsy G and Me.

HEAT THE ROCKS (2-1), a 3-year-old filly, finished second in her first try around two turns and now the daughter of Unusual Heat tries grass for the first time. We all know offspring love the grass so trainer Jerry Hollendorfer appears to have her placed for a big win with jockey Elvis Trujillo aboard.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Acceptance, 2. Tough Sunday, 3. Pulmarack. LONG SHOT: Avanti Bello.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Heavens Stairway, 2. Velvet Mesquite, 3. Doinghardtimeagain. LONG SHOT: Heat Trap.

==

Santa Anita selections for Sunday, Jan. 11 (off the turf)

RAIN AT SANTA ANITA OFF THE TURF SO JUST THROW MY TURF PICKS OUT THE WINDOW. I WILL ONLY GRADE THE DIRT RACES.

FIRST RACE: 1. Greeley Awesome, 2. Ezio, 3. Sizzlin’ Joe. LONG SHOT: Empty Headed.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Apollo Ten, 2. Got Even, 3. I’ll Wrap It Up. LONG SHOT: I Don’t Care Who.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Light Striker, 2. Kohala, 3. Comin’offthebench. LONG SHOT: Vocalist.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Lucy in Diamonds (best bet), 2. Thermodynamics, 3. Exfanofsixties. LONG SHOT: It Girl.

LUCY IN DIAMONDS (4-1) is a first-time starter from the Jerry Hollendorfer barn, which hits at 30% with this type. She has been training at Pomona and is by a good first out sire in Rock Hard Ten. Jockey Elvis Trujillo (21% with The Dorf)  jumps on.

==

Race 5: #3 Autumn Flower (10-1) SCRATCHED

This daughter of Flower Alley gets a huge post switch after starting from the No. 10 hole at Del Mar. She had no shot that day but still came running in the lane to finish a good fifth for trainer Dan Hendricks and jockey Alex Solis. Look for further improvement as Hendricks is 22% with MSW.

FIFTH RACE: 1. Scandal, 2. Madam Aamoura, 3. Conquest Artura. LONG SHOT: Caradini.

As you can see I liked Autumn Flower, but had to go in a different direction. SCANDAL has been training well for trainer Richard Mandella and she made up a lot of ground on Nov. 8 at Del Mar.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Gusy Ruler, 2. Molten Image, 3. Triunfo. LONG SHOT: Takem by Surprise.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Tiz Midnight, 2. My Sweet Addiction, 3. Taste Like Candy. LONG SHOT: Legacy.

==
