Horse racing, Santa Anita

Santa Anita picks for Wednesday, Jan. 1 (updated)

First, Happy New Year.

Second, jockey Tyler Baze returns to the saddle after a suspension for substance abuse. Let’s hope he has his act together in his personal life and on the track.

Lots of scratches early.

FIRST RACE: 1. Rebelution (SCRATCHED), 2. Sunland Vintage, 3. Glad’s Gals. LONG SHOT: Lethal Miss.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Govenor Charlie (SCRATCHED), 2. Little Jerry, 3. Fury Kapcori. LONG SHOT: Safety Belt.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Joe Carl, 2. Go to the Pulpit, 3. Cook Inlet. LONG SHOT: Romeo Royale.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Right on Schedule, 2. Tommy’s Kid, 3. Atticus Scouts. LONG SHOT: Robertino.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Setsuko, 2. Say Ow, 3. Ever Rider. LONG SHOT: Scorpion Warrior.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Perfecta, 2. Smart N Dreamy, 3. Boller Bomb. LONG SHOT: Ricspretentiousgal.

Interesting jockey switch here on PERFECTA, a daughter of Pleasantly Perfect. Joe Talamo has ridden three of the last four times, not necessarily with great success, so trainer Richard Mandella goes to the red hot Gary Stevens. They are a 40% proposition the last year so why try to fight it.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Betty Bing Bing, 2. Very Thankful, 3. Glorious Rebecca. LONG SHOT: Exclusive Girl.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Rever de Vous, 2. Full Ransom, 3. Sushi Empire. LONG SHOT: Saintly Joan.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Apache Ambush, 2. Second Proposal, 3. Goyan. LONG SHOT: Grand Humor.

Updated Hollywood Park picks for Saturday, Nov. 30

The track announced late Friday, that Saturday’s stakes races would remain on the turf and the others would be off the turf so handicap accordingly.

==

FIRST RACE: 1. Warren’s Tyler S., 2. Designer, 3. Tribe. LONG SHOT: Congregationalist.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Royal Banker, 2. Global View, 3. Pablo Del Monte. LONG SHOT: Aotearoa.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Money Cannon, 2. Derringer, 3. Too Fast to Pass. LONG SHOT: Kafister.

Pure and simple here as when trainer Adam Kitchingman has a live one he goes to jockey Edwin Maldonado. The duo is 10-for-20 in its last 20 races at Hollywood Park the last two years. Kitchingman claimed MONEY CANNON out of a winning race at this level and he returns to face straight 3-year-olds after facing older at Turf Paradise last time. DERRINGER comes out of a key race where three horses have come back to win.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Love In The Desert, 2. Clenor, 3. Savings Account. LONG SHOT: Full Ransom.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Scamalot, 2. This Cat’s Awesome, 3. Lucky Jack. LONG SHOT: Lucky J Lane.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Shoer Hugh, 2. Soul Candy, 3. Brown Boss. LONG SHOT: Apollo Ten.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Oh Billy Billy, 2. Pray Hard, 3. Toosmartbyhalf. LONG SHOT: Prince of Paris.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. D’Obession, 2. He’s a Dance Star, 3. Insideondoutside. LONG SHOT: Brokered.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Majestic Moment, 2. Gilligan, 3. Cook Inlet. LONG SHOT: Russel’s Run.

Trainer Victor Garcia is 6-for-10 (60%) first off the claim and he has enough confidence here with this $8,000 purchase MAJESTIC MOMENT to move him up one level. This 4-year-old gelding broke his maiden over this surface last year against tougher plus there is a good work showing since the claim.

==

TENTH RACE: 1. Magic Daddy (best bet), 2. Mary Helen’s Storm, 3. America Rising. LONG SHOT: Copote’s Royalty.

Trainer Bob Baffert might be giving one away here as MAGIC DADDY, a 3-year-old colt, has shown speed against straight maidens but he drops him all the way down to the bottom in a $20,000 maiden claimer. Look for a wire-to-wire effort here at short odds under jockey Martin Garcia.

Enjoy Hollywood Park’s break

With special Veterans Day racing on Monday, Hollywood Park won’t return to racing until Friday afternoon and it’s probably a good idea.

In case you haven’t noticed, the fields at the final Hollywood Park fall meet has been less than sensational. Many days the feature race can’t be run late on the card due to a lack of entries and track officials want to put the largest fields in the Pick Six (and rightly so).

Heck, the biggest fields are usually those $20,000 maiden claimers run as the last race on the card so it be part of the super high five bet (sorry never have bet that one. I have a hard enough time picking first place.)

So Wednesday and Thursday enjoy betting Aqueduct and Churchill Downs as Hollywood Park sticks to its four-day week.
