Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Sunday, Feb. 21

Preview: Not a bad card. The smallest field is in the first with just seven horses. Trainer Tom Proctor has won 3 of his last 9 starters while his usual jockey Brian Pedroza is 3 for his last 10 starts. Big long shots on Friday’s card. Let’s hope it continues.

Race 1: #6 Misty Steps (15-1)

 Trainer Anthony Granitz has done well here in the last in dirt route races. This filly is trying two turns for the first time in a long time, but Granitz is 14% going sprint to route. This 4-year-old has Brisnet’s best late pace rating.

Race 6: #2 Glencoe Girl (turf only) (12-1) 

Trainer Graham Motion tried to get this filly on the turf first time out but it was taken off and she still finished third on the dirt. The race is under her belt and now Motion adds Lasix and he’s 23% first time Lasix. The sire Giant’s Causeway is 9% first time turf.

Race 7: #4 Jersey Blue Giant (6-1) 

This gelding has won 5 of 7 on the main tack here. Trainer Joe Woodard is 25% third off the layoff and jockey Angel Serpa keeps the mount.

Race 8: #6 Captain Kitten (turf only) (12-1)

This 3-year-old broke his maiden at first asking on the turf at Delaware Park. Trainer Steve Epley Jr. brings him down for his first start of 2016 and he is 27% with horses off a 90-plus day layoff and he gets good turf jockey Daniel Centeno.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, Jan. 23

Preview: Check the morning changes because Tampa was off the turf on Friday so there will definitely be some give in the ground, if they stays on the grass. Really good card. Lots of quality so do your handicapping accordingly. Obviously Antonio Gallardo leads all jockeys on both the turf and dirt. The other top three turf jockeys are Daniel Centeno, Ronnie Allen Jr., and Fernando De la Cruz. They are also the top four jockeys on the dirt with Jose Ferrer (10 wins) also one to watch on the main track.

Race 3: #12 Kicking Kitty (9-2)

Jockey Scott Spieth normally rides for trained Aldana Gonzalez but jumps off one of her entries in here to ride this mare, which is coming out of a key race that has produced two winners. Trainer Kitty Cheeks is 30% with horses coming off a layoff of more than 90 days.

Race 5: #1 Annie Rocks (9-2)

Leading rider Antonio Gallardo doesn’t need to ride every race, but he gets on this filly, which is coming out of a Gulfstream Park race that has produced five next out winners.

Race 7: #2 Awesome State (8-1) 

Trainer Brian Lynch is trying to find out what he has here with this Canadian invader. Lynch has spotted his horses well with a 2-for-4 record. Lynch is 22% with horses first time in his barn.The horse also adds Lasix for the first time.

Race 10: #9 British Bulldog (turf only) (3-1) BEST BET

This colt ran in Southern California as a 2-year-old and comes out of a race that has produced two winners. Trainer Tom Proctor knows how to get them ready off a layoff and barn rider Brian Pedroza takes the mount.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Sunday, March 21

Race 4: #3 Righteous Ride (8-1)

This is a first-time starter by Mach Ride, who has won with 40% of his firsters from a small sample. Trainer G. Ray Trisler has won with 3-of-6 first-timers and there’s a decent work back in February. Might be ready for jockey Victor Lebron.

Race 7: #3 Early Entry (4-1)

This colt has won previously at this track and returns off a win at Gulfstream Park, a race that has produced three next out winners. Also has a win at this 7-furlong distance. Jockey Luis Garcia should be able to sit in second flight and pounce in the stretch.

Race 8: #4 Extreme Excess (turf only) (10-1) 

This 3-year-old filly take on older females for the first time. She finished third on the grass two back and takes a drop in class for trainer Dennis Ward, who is 14% with jockey Brian Pedroza.

Race 7: #6 Prince Vincenzo (7-2)

This 3-year-old broke his maiden over this turf course before running on the dirt at Ocala. He returns to the grass here for trainer Kathleen O’Connell and jockey Antonio Gallardo, who are a 26% proposition.

Race 9: #8 Federal Agent (7-2)

This gelding just missed at this level in his Tampa debut last time. He’s back in three weeks looking for come from off the pace for trainer Anthony Granitz and jockey Brian Pedroza.

Race 6: #7 Congrats Honey (3-1)

Trainer Dennis Ward is 25% first off the claim and that’s what we have here. Ward’s favorite jockey, Brian Pedroza, takes the mount and from the outside should be able to control the race.

Race 9: #4 Lundi Gras (turf) (10-1)

This 4-year-old filly drops down from the allowance ranks into an open claimer for trainer Lynn Scace. The filly has a win over the turf at the meet and although this is tougher company than that she might handle it with veteran jockey Dean Butler.

Race 3: #4 Watch This Cat (5-2)

Trainer Mark Casse runs them all over the country and ships this 3-year-old filly to Tampa to make her turf debut. She finished fifth in her debut at Woodbine and is bred to like two turns and the grass.

Race 6: #10 Calbo (6-1)

This 10-year-old is making his third start off the layoff and should be ready for a big effort. He has won 4-of-13 over the local strip and is 3-for-9 at 7 furlongs for trainer Robert O’Connor and jockey Brian Pedroza.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Friday, Dec. 19

Race 2: #6 Kholberg (12-1)

Has been given two months off and trainer Anthony Pecoraro is 31% with horses off a layoff of 61-180 days. Jockey Brian Pedroza rode this 2-year-old at Delaware Park and the gelding has a good work over the surface.

Race 6: #3 Annamonarchos (turf only) (5-1)

This 4-year-old filly has a good third over the turf course for trainer Anthony Granitz. Needs to get into the race a little sooner and maybe that will happen with jockey Fernando De La Cruz, who rode her to her last win at Indiana Downs.
