Santa Anita opinions for Thursday, Oct. 5

SECOND RACE: #5 Psycho Dar
This gelding broke his maiden at first asking at Del Mar. Has speed and jockey Evin Roman stays aboard for trainer Steve Miyadi and they are 25 percent together. Also comes out of a key race that has produced two winners so far.

FIFTH RACE: #9 Hawk’s Journey (10-1)
Trainer Ed Moger Jr. is having a good year and brings this filly down from NoCal. This is her first time in a claimer and hot jockey Drayden Van Dyke jumps on. In addition to a win bet I would back wheel her in the exacta.

SEVENTH RACE: #9 Cheekaboomboom (7-2)
This gelding is 2-1-1-0 on the dowhill turf course and jockey Flavien Prat stays aboard. Prat is 25% with trainer Peter Eurton. Play an exacta box with the speedy Mr Vargas (#6, 3-1).

EIGHTH RACE: #10 Decarchy Dawn (3-1)
Trainer Bob Hess Jr. is pulling out all the stop to get this 3-year-old to break his maiden. He is adding blinkers and gelded the horse since his last race. The son of Decarchy comes out of a key Del Mar race that has produced two winners so far and keeps jockey Kent Desormeaux aboard.

Good luck.

Del Mar selections for Thursday, Aug. 4

Preview: The middle of the meet woes have hit as there are less than 60 horses entered on this card. Some trainers off to slow starts are Mike Puype 1-for-22, Kristin Mulhall 1-for-18 plus Keith Desormeaux and Bob Hess Jr., both 1-for-16.

Race 1: 1. Celebrity Status, 2. Ain’t No Other, 3. Senator Bob. LONG SHOT: Tripski.

Race 2: 1. Arrogate, 2. Five Palms, 3. Teniente Coronel. LONG SHOT: Mystery Train.

Race 3: 1. Moose Skowron, 2. Handsome Hank, 3. Quorum of Joy. LONG SHOT: Proud Zoning.

Race 4: 1. #5 Tattooed Kitty (4-1) BEST BET, 2. Lil Miss Sapphire, 3. Holy Mosey. LONG SHOT: Zensational Dancer.
Trainer Peter Miller has a penchant for scoring with first-timers from San Luis Rey Downs, like this filly. We love the sire Wildcat Heir (15% first time out) and Miller puts Brayan Pena aboard.

Race 5: 1. #3 Hell On Wheels (12-1), 2. Lamontagne, 3. Discatsonthesquare. LONG SHOT: Lemon de Oro.
It isn’t often you get double-digits on a horse trained Phil D’Amato but that’s what we are getting here. D’Amato is 24% with horses coming off a 90-plus day layoff and she has plenty of early foot in this turf sprint. The sire Speightstown gets 12% winners first time turf.

Race 6: 1. Prime Issue, 2. Eight Spokes, 3. Signature Cat. LONG SHOT: Pulla Train.

Race 7: 1. #1 Dame Street (9-2), 2. How Unusual, 3. Mo Knows. LONG SHOT: Lunar Empress.
It’s that man Phil D’Amato again as he gets this filly off 2-for-2 efforts on the grass at Tampa Bay Downs. Top grass jockey Flavien Prat takes the mount for this improving 3-year-old and he’s 28% with D’Amato.

Race 8: 1. Soap Box, 2. Triple Clown, 3. Jimmy the Juice. LONG SHOT: Accordance.

Del Mar selections for Thursday, July 21

Preview: For those keeping track, no pun intended, the main dirt track played to speed on Sunday, especially when the horse was in the two path or out further. How the track plays this week is anyone’s guess because there always seems to be a change after the two day break so check Wednesday’s results to see how the track played.
Seems like speed was again king on Wednesday, at least early on the card. Tried to beat Bob Baffert in the feature and he goes 1-2. One of those days: close but no cigar. Full picks up later.

Race 1: 1. Gunslinger, 2. Sweet Shop, 3. Far Out Kailee. LONG SHOT: Warren’s T. Baze.

Race 2 1. #3 Where’s the D (4-1), 2. Pico Chick, 3. Star of Munster. LONG SHOT: Dragon Flower.
This filly drops into a claiming race for the first time in her career, a move trainer Doug O’Neill is 20% with and she has speed, which we’ve already said is good on this track. She broke her maiden over this track and had a good work over it last week.

Race 3: 1. Te Rapa, 2. Mr T Bird, 3. Freddies Dream. LONG SHOT: Neveradoubt.

Race 4: 1. Reward of Roses, 2. Crown on Tap, 3. Kylie Informed. LONG SHOT: Broken Marriage.

Race 5: 1. #3 Warm Endowment (4-1), 2. Californiasunshine, 3. Shehastheritestuff. LONG SHOT: Malware.
Interesting move here by jockey Flavien Prat, who could have ridden another favorite in this race, but opts to ride this daughter of Unusual Heat. Trainer Dean Pederson is 21% with horses coming back in 31-60 days.

Race 6: 1. #5 Goliath’s Girl (6-1), 2. Trinitys Turn, 3. Plastered. LONG SHOT: Marell Street.
Trainer Phil D’Amato is already off to a fast start with multiple wins opening week. Here we have a fill who broke her maiden last time out and D’Amato sends her around two turns for the first time, a move he is 24% with. He also goes from an apprentice rider to Tyler Baze and they are 26% together.

Race 7: 1. #7 Mai Tai (6-1), 2. Almost Reality, 3. Summer Lady. LONG SHOT: Queenofthecastle.
This filly finished second to the talented Enola Gray first time out and then broke her maiden at second asking. Now she tries two turns on the grass for the first time. The sire Heatseeker gets 22% winners first time on the turf. Trainer Bob Hess and jockey Kent Desormeaux are a potent combination.

Race 8: 1. Star Express, 2. Five Star Jack, 3. Big Bad Jon. LONG SHOT: Squash.

Santa Anita picks for Thursday, May 22

In case you missed it, Joe Ferrer, injured jockey Rafael Bejarano’s agent, told Steve Andersen of the Daily Racing Form that Bejarano was targeting a return to action for the final weekend of the Santa Anita meet (June 27-29).

Bejarano suffered rib, collarbone and clavicle injuries. He had surgery last week and is finally home.

You gotta love the quote Ferrer told Andersen.

“The rib will heal before the collarbone, which will take the longest to heal,” Ferrer said. “These guys recover fast; they’re in such good shape.”

Hey, Joe, just let Rafael return when he is ready, not when you are ready to start collecting a paycheck, again.

==

FIRST RACE: 1. Seduire, 2. Enchanting Lady, 3. Yes She’s a Dancer. LONG SHOT: No Maybe Baby.

The high-priced 2-year-olds are beginning to enter the starting gate. This daughter of Elusive Quality cost $130,000 and has some works on the tab for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Jockey Corey Nakatani takes the ride. ENCHANTING LADY cost $650,000 and is trained by Bob Baffert. She has some big works and looks ready to go from the outside post as Martin Garcia will ride.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Lakota Road, Euroclydon, 3. Quay Factor. LONG SHOT: Hansarella.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Gladding, 2. Kate’s Event, 3. Giant Ego. LONG SHOT: 1. Sheer Talent.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Jack Diz, 2. Stadtpark, 3. This Cat’s Awesome. LONG SHOT: Broadcaster.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Charissa, 2. Tough Business, 3. Chain Lightning. LONG SHOT: Here Comes Bobbie.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Julio’s Gold (best bet), 2. Secret Genius, 3. Addendum. LONG SHOT: Woebegone.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Prayer Be Mine, 2. Sea John’s Spirit, 3. Queen of the Hill. LONG SHOT: Little But Lucky.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Kadesha, 2. Star Act, 3. Burning Arch. LONG SHOT: Nero’s Pleasure.

This 4-year-old filly KADESHA makes her career debut going long on the grass. She was bred in France and her mother and father were both Irish. That screams grass. Trainer Bob Hess Jr. and jockey Kent Desormeaux hit with a first-timer last weekend and try to do the same here.
