Del Mar, Horse racing

Del Mar selections for Sunday, July 19

It appears Del Mar will be on the turf today, but @Jonlindodrf reported this morning workouts on the main track were on the slow side but the sun is out.

==

FIRST RACE: 1. Keezheekoni, 2. Gucci Brown, 3. Little Emma. LONG SHOT: Sweet Profit.

==
SECOND RACE: 1. Summer Wine, 2. Codacious, 3. Fast Magoo. LONG SHOT: Desert Steel.

Golden Gate horses have done well at the meet so far and this one broke its maiden at first asking on the turf so there’s no telling how good she is. Good turf jockey Corey Nakatani takes the mount for trainer Bill Morey, who is 24% with horses hat won their last race.

THIRD RACE: 1. Light Striker, 2. Dublin Dancer, 3. Toomanytomatoes. LONG SHOT: Sheza Eyeopener.
==
FOURTH RACE: 1. War Destiny, 2. Inexcess Again, 3. Disco Boy. LONG SHOT: Juansagain.
==
FIFTH RACE: 1. Native Treasure, 2. Dead Easy, 3. Husband’s Folly. LONG SHOT: Unusual Taste.

Jockey James Graham is trying his hand at Del Mar this summer after riding in the Midwest. He’s good on the turf and jumps on this North California shipper for trainer Ed Moger Jr. This son of Tribal Rule likes to be forwardly place so should be in from the bell.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. DREAMY (best bet), 2. Pretty n Cool, 3. C. C. Zipp. LONG SHOT: Albeit.
==
SEVENTH RACE: 1. Top Fortitude, 2. Cherubim, 3. Yiannis. LONG SHOT: Snuggley Bear.
==
EIGHTH RACE: 1. Sunset Glow, 2. Pammy Whammy, 3. Her Emmynency. LONG SHOT: Paulina’s Love.

This 3-year-old filly was chasing Lady Eli, the undefeated turfer, two races in a row and then lost to Celestine in her last race, which has proven to be a key race. Trainer Wesley Ward ships West and jockey Gary Stevens is more than happy to take the ride on the speedster.

==
NINTH RACE: 1. Ultimate Luck, 2. Superboot, 3. Big Hat Charlie. LONG SHOT: Rebel Rebel.
==
10TH RACE: 1. Poythress, 2. Second Summer, 3. Air Pocket. LONG SHOT: Box Score.

==

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Argyle Cut, 2. Home School, 3. Forever Juanito. LONG SHOT: Sawyer’s Hill.

After running the last two years on the Northern California circuit, ARGYLE CUT, a son of Harlington, gets tested for class in a trip South. The 3-year-old has never been worse than second in four turf tries. Trainer Bill Morey gets top-class turf rider Corey Nakatani aboard.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Cinmars Dance, 2. Presiding Justice, 3. Solid Wager. LONG SHOT: Mavericks Gun.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Appealing Tale, 2. Unbridled Command, 3. You Know I Know. LONG SHOT: County Lineman.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. La Mejor Fiesta, 2. Jojo Warrior, 3. Delta Flower. LONG SHOT: Stop Smiling.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Alexis Tangier (best bet), 2. Williams Bay, 3. Spy Girl (SCRATCHED). LONG SHOT: Venetian. NEW PICKS: 1. Alexis Tangier (best bet), 2. Williams Bay, 3. Pouncerounddaclock. LONG SHOT: Venetian.

Interesting jockey assignment here as Gary Stevens usually rides first string for trainer Tom Proctor, who has two entered in this race. However, Stevens decides to ride ALEXIS TANGIER, a daughter of Tiznow, for trainer Richard Mandella, who is 3-for-9 going from dirt to turf. Jockey Mike Smith jumps off Alexis to ride first-time starter WILLIAMS BAY, who has been training lights out for Proctor.

Updated Del Mar picks for Friday, Aug. 2.

This isn’t the best card of the meet, and in fact might be the worst card of the first 13 days, but you are going to have these types of cards once in a while. At least there is a Pick 6 carryover of more than $100,000. Here is an updated look at the card with some commentary.

FIRST RACE: 1. Unusual Don, 2. Boston Charley, 3. Sailors Brother. LONG SHOT: The Mad Hungarian (scratched).

Tough to go against trainer Peter Miller in a spot like this with UNUSUAL DON, who has been training well for his debut.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Cori Celesti, 2. Cavalla, 3. Warren’s Judy. LONG SHOT: Jolly Green Bean.

Tough race here, Any horse could win it. Good work horses appear to be WARREN’S JUDY, HELLO STORMY and BEAUTIFUL STRIKE.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Top Knot, 2. Liar Liar Liar, 3. Proud Bok. LONG SHOT: Tiz a Funtime.

Not crazy about the outside post draw for TOP KNOT, but hopefully jockey Joe Talamo will find a way to get to the inside of the Polytrack. Trainer Vladimir Cerin does very well maiden claimers. MUSIC AND ME, JAYA ROO and PARIS AFFAIR look like they have decent works.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Rossi Reserve, 2. Lanida, 3. Mary Contrary. LONG SHOT: Halfapondarosa.

We hit the bottom of the barrel for fillies and mares in this $8,000 claimer. Looks wide open again. ROSSI RESERVE just missed at one level above this and jockey Rafael Bejarano jumps on for trainer Bill Morey. LANIDA just won at the level at Hollywood Park and has a win and two seconds at Del Mar.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Whining, 2. Gutshot Straight, 3. Diamond of Blue. LONG SHOT: Let’s Get Crackin.

Another claiming group for us to look at. WHINING has been running in New Mexico and ships looking for the Del Mar bonus. New Mexico horses have done well at the meet. The major question here is whether the 4-year-old gelding will take to the Polytrack track.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Warren’s Rosebud, 2. Market Quote, 3. Zanbo. LONG SHOT: Joint Attempt.

Again we don’t like out post draw with WARREN’S ROSEBUD, but Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens continues to ride in fine form. Here’s hoping he can find a way to get over. Remember the turf course rails were moved last night to 14 feet so speed might do well on this course for the next week. JOINT ATTEMPT should get a long look in here as trainer Mike Machowsky just scored Thursday with a shipper on the turf. Machowsky can train and is looking for the bonus money here. This 3-year-old filly has been in California for a month and appears to be training just fine.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Omega Star, 2. Ambitious Brew, 3. U’narack. LONG SHOT: Follini.

Yes, we left likely favorite TIZ A MINISTER off of our top horses. He has never won at this 7-furlong distance and has never been better than second (twice) in three tries at Del Mar. Of course, that means he will romp today. However, we like OMEGA STAR for the team of Bejarano and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Look at that bullet work on July 24. He just might love the Polytrack. Almost every horse in the race is training well so don’t be afraid of trying to beat Tiz a Minister.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. CONCORDE WEST (best bet), 2. Hard Play, 3. Dramatic Allan. LONG SHOT: Arizona Wildcat.

This race might be tougher than it looks but we’ll stick with CONCORDE WEST, who is dropping into a maiden claimer for the first time. This 3-year-old colt lost to No Distinction two races back at Oaklawn Park. All No Distinction did after that was string three wins together and finish second in a minor Saratoga stakes last week. Quite a few horses are training well in this spot so don’t be afraid of a price underneath.
