Del Mar selections for Thursday, Sept. 3

FIRST RACE: 1. Central Casting, 2. Aiming Straight, 3. Marquee Cat. LONG SHOT: Tumbleweedprincess.

==
SECOND RACE: 1. #4 She’s Flush (6-1), 2. Zanbo, 3. Fantastic Mizz. LONG SHOT: Jade With Envy.

This filly has been overmatched in a pair of Cal-bred stakes. She now returns to the claiming ranks for trained Ed Moger Jr. and gets the services of jockey Corey Nakatani, who has been knocking them dead on the turf this meeting.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Scarlet Emerald, 2. Blue Chat, 3. Of Course It Is. LONG SHOT: Brookes All Mine.
==
FOURTH RACE: 1. Sir Cal, 2. Heat, 3. At Ease. LONG SHOT: Sundar Drums.
==
FIFTH RACE: 1. Harbaugh, 2. Moonlight Meeting, 3. Karma King. LONG SHOT: Love de Car.
Come one, have you a better hunch on the opening day of the college football season?
==
SIXTH RACE: 1. #8 MERLE (6-1) BEST BET, 2. Pipappy, 3. Dirt in Your Face. LONG SHOT: Pleasure Point.

Trainer Neil Drysdale is giving up on this 3-year-old gelding as he drops him from an MSW to the maiden claiming ranks. Drysdale is 58% when he puts a horse in a maiden claimer for the first time. This horse showed a little talent last time until he got steadied on the turf and now runs on the dirt for the first time. Look for big improvement here.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. #2 Turnover (6-1), 2. Boozer, 3. City of Vengeance. LONG SHOT: Seeking the Sherif.

Trainer Bob Baffert isn’t known for turf sprinters but he might have one here in this 4-year-old. The gelding was sired by Big Brown (12% first time turf) out of a Lemon Drop Kid (12%) mare. That screams turf. There some decent works and he might surprise.

==
EIGHTH RACE: 1. Tizmatic, 2. Alltheleavesrbrown, 3. Vartan. LONG SHOT: Pyrotechnics.

Del Mar selections for Thursday, August 6

Tough to explain some of Wednesday’s results other than the track was worked on Tuesday and you just never no how it is going to play on Wednesdays. Hats off to those who hit the long shots. I had no clue (obviously if you look at the results). Good luck.

FIRST RACE: 1. Avicii, 2. Always a Chance, 3. Swissarella. LONG SHOT: Two Step Flor.

==
SECOND RACE: 1. Scarlet Emerald, 2. Mitzi Winks, 3. Amare. LONG SHOT: Lady of the Lake.
==
THIRD RACE: 1. #2 CORNBREAD RED (4-1) best bet, 2. Know Plans, 3. Saticoy. LONG SHOT: Tribalist.

This colt makes his turf debut for a sire (Grazen) that is OK with those types. Trainer Phil D’Amato is 35% for an 180-day layoff or more, 22% turf/dirt and 31% with horses that won their last race.

==
FOURTH RACE: 1. Jet Warrior, 2. Not Enough Eddie, 3. The Cleaners. LONG SHOT: Chapman’s Peak.
==
FIFTH RACE: 1. #1 Alltheleavesrbrown (5-1), 2. Feynman, 3. Architop. LONG SHOT: Admiral Jaxon.

Midwestern trainer Michael Stidham tries for some more “Ship N Win” money with this son of Big Brown. When last seen at Arlington Park, he finished second in his turf debut. Stidham can get them ready off a long layoff (25%) and jockey Joe Talamo is 27% with Stidham.

==
SIXTH RACE: 1. #6 Atlantic Slew (6-1), 2. Tiz Pleasant, 3. Gracee Hunny. LONG SHOT: Briana Jean.

This 2-year-old filly ran into a buzz saw in her debut as the winner, Obey, came back to win a Cal-bred stakes recently. Trainer Mike Puype does well in the state-bred ranks and he is 23% going from MSW to maiden claimers.

==
SEVENTH RACE: 1. Istanford, 2. Famous Alice, 3. She’s Not Here. LONG SHOT: Indecise.
==
EIGHTH RACE: 1. Miltee, 2. Jens de Ville, 3. Out of Mischief. LONG SHOT: Ghost of Navigator.

Del Mar selections for Sunday, Nov. 9 (Bing Crosby Season)

FIRST RACE: 1. Pulla Train, 2. My Slew, 3. Frensham. LONG SHOT: Oligarch.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Gold Medallion, 2. Graeme Crackerjack, 3. Harlington Night. LONG SHOT: Squawk One.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Guyfromtheskyfive, 2. Roper, 3. Sonic Fever. LONG SHOT: Bound for Heaven.

==

FOURTH RACE: Sizzlin’ Joe, 2. Miceli, 3. Los Bambinos. LONG SHOT: Tigah.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Home Maid Brownie (best bet), 2. Siena Grace, 3. Sheza Dish. LONG SHOT: Bench Ruling.

It’s probably a safe bet jockey Martin Pedroza, who won three races on Saturday’s card, had his choice of the two Eric Kruljac-trained horses in this race and he chose HOME MAID BROWNIE (3-1), a daughter of Big Brown. She ran a big second at this level over the Polytrack in August.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Rosa Divina, 2. Southern Owah, 3. Bold Decision. LONG SHOT: Sunday Stroll.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Charlie’s Angel, 2. Feline Forum, 3. Colonel Joan. LONG SHOT: Kadesha.

CHARLIE’S ANGEL (3-1), a 3-year-old French import, makes her second start in the U.S. She finished fifth at Santa Anita after a slow start for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. She gets Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith and Smith is a 26% combo with Hollendorfer.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Tribal Gal, 2. Swiss Lake Yodeler, 3. Sweet Marini. LONG SHOT: Warren’s Veneda.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. The Custodian, 2. Synnin, 3. Itsgettinhotinhere. LONG SHOT: Easy Ten.

Santa Anita opinions for Sunday, Nov. 2 (UPDATED)

Just a couple of opinions for Sunday. Breeders’ Cup burn out. See you Friday for opening day at Del Mar’s new fall meet.

I’ll just say one thing about BC Classic yesterday: chickenshit call by the stewards and chickenshit of them to leave without facing the media. That’s what gives California racing a bad name. It was blatant interference and Bayern should have come down. Period. I respect all of the stewards in California, but yesterday wasn’t their finest moment.

As for today, there is a $1.3 million carryover in the Pick Six so I’ve added a few more thoughts on those races.

Race 5: #5 Dortmund (7-2)

A lot of trainers are starting maidens today on the Santa Anita dirt because the circuit moves to Del Mar’s Polytrack for the rest of the month. This son of Big Brown has been working well for his debut for trainer Bob Baffert, who is 22% with first-timers. JUST KIDDING has been working well for Eurton but don’t like him as a first out trainer. SIR SAMSON also working well. DA JENIUS ships in from Saratoga and comes out of a race with three next out winners. PASSINAFLASH is from the Mora/O’Neill barn and they have been firing with their 2-year-olds.

==

RACE 6: LIMINARY, ILLUMINANT, TATERBUG all working well. CALLBACK has been working great and been working with Dortmund for Baffert. Indian Princess and Natalie’s Wonder come out of key races.

==

RACE 7: 2-4-12-11

==

EIGHTH RACE: 12-2-1-7

==

Race 9: #6 I’m Already Sexy(6-1)

Trainer Wayne Catalano doesn’t come West much so when he does it’s time to pay attention. He brings regular jockey F. Geroux for the ride. This 4-year-old filly has early speed and will look to use it here. Tought race as FILIMBI just lost to BC winner DAYATTHESPA, WALL OF SOUND lost to JUST THE JUDGE, who ran well yesterday. STRATHNAVER big work, I like

==

RACE 10: I like LITTLE CURLIN. KING PTOLEMY, KIBOU and ROUGH PASSAGE, but ALFA BIRD will be odds on and tough to beat.
