Del Mar selections for Friday, Aug. 28

Race 2: #2 Midnight Belle (3-1)

Trainer Mark Glatt got the comeback race out of the way for this daughter of Bernardini and now he sends her two turns for the first time, something she is bred to do. The 3-year-old has a couple of good works since opening week and she’s out of a Bertrando mare and I loved Bertrandos stretching out plus jockey Rafael Bejarano stays aboard.

==

Race 5: #2 Blind Dreams (6-1)

Seems to be improving but she needs to show she wants to win. Jockey Gonzalo Nicholas had a big win on the turf last week and seems to understand this 4-year-old filly. Trainer Mike Pender has had a tough meet and due for some good luck. Inside and speed work well on this turf course when the rails are at 30 feet.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Proud Vixen, 2. Consecrate, 3. Sweet Factory. LONG SHOT: Seans Silverdancer (SCRATCHED).

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Peg’s Journey (best bet), 2. Spoiledandentitled, 3. Warren’s Trica R. LONG SHOT: Clever Expansion.

Jockey Kent Desormeaux has scored with a couple of first-time starters in the last week and he gets aboard another one here in PEG’S JOURNEY. Good Journey is a decent first out sire and this filly has a couple of decent works showing for trainer Hector Palma. There don’t appear to be any world beaters in this race.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Cause Im a Bigshot, 2. Magic Spot, 3. Unusual Style. LONG SHOT: Vanlose Stairway.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Hall of Fame, 2. Yard Line, 3. Big Cazanova. LONG SHOT: Talent Show.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Quick Casablanca, 2. Bright Thought, 3. Segway. LONG SHOT: Irish Surf.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Sir Perservere, 2. Zim N the Mailma, 3. It is Living Water. LONG SHOT: Durango Flier.

SIR PERSRVERE, a 4-year-old gelding, makes his second career start and first try on the grass. Bertrando has always been a good stretch out sire. Apprentice Drayden Van Dyke jumps on and he is a 20% proposition from 15 mounts with trainer Marty Jones.

Santa Anita picks for Sunday, Feb. 16

FIRST RACE: 1. Snaps, 2. Crucero, 3. Scarly Charly. LONG SHOT: China Girl Lover.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Paseo Alegro, 2. Truelee Scrappin, 3. Gal Has to Like It. LONG SHOT: Street Car.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Life Is a Joy (best bet), 2. Red Outlaw, 3. Gangnam Guy. LONG SHOT: Royal Banker.

Look who this 3-year-old gelding LIFE IS A JOY has been losing races to: California Chrome, Tamarando and Better Bet. Now he makes his turf debut here and tries down the hill. Jockey Mike Smith takes the mount for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and they are a 57% proposition at Santa Anita.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Pass the Pico, 2. Awesome Indy, 3. Sheriff Ryan. LONG SHOT: Shackbamalama.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Rprettyboyfloyd, 2. Kobe’s Back, 3. Roger Rocket. LONG SHOT: Cherubim.

RPRETTYBOYFLOYD, a son of Bluegrass Cat, was entered on Saturday but trainer Denise Breuer decided to run this maiden here in the San Vicente at 7 furlongs. The 3-year-old has finished second in his first two tries to Bayern, who came back to win an allowance race Thursday by a ton, and Chelios, a promising sophomore from trainer Tom Proctor. The Bayern race is proving to be one of the top key maiden races of the year.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Autumn View, 2. Warren’s Cracker, 3. Van Dien Avenue. LONG SHOT: Heavens Stairway.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Fifteen Black, 2. Whine for Wine, 3. Nooten. LONG SHOT: Cinematic Cat.

We were hoping this son of Bertrando would run a couple weeks ago, but FIFTEEN BLACK didn’t draw in. He was the 4-5 favorite last summer at Pleasanton, but obviously must have come out of the maiden race injured. He returns here for trainer Jeff Bonde, who puts the blinkers on and this 3-year-old has been training lights out in the mornings. He draws a nice outside post and jockey Martin Garcia jumps on.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Journey On, 2. My Gi Gi, 3. Bee Brave. LONG SHOT: Oscar Party.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Violate, 2. Natal, 3. Capers N Wine. LONG SHOT: Rambunchkie.

Santa Anita picks for Saturday, Jan. 25 (updated)

FIRST RACE: 1. Well Measured, 2. Even to the Moon, 3. Nooten (SCRATCHED). LONG SHOT: Next Book.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Volkonsky, 2. Deep Play, 3. Christopher Street. LONG SHOT: Gab Power.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Fifteen Black (SCRATCHED), 2. Seeking Asylum, 3. Wicked Heat. LONG SHOT: Fourth Generation.

FIFTEEN BLACK, a 3-year-old colt, needs a scratch to get in the race as he is on the also-eligible list, but if he does, look out. Was the 4-5 favorite at Pleasanton in June and finished seventh. Obviously must have suffered an injury and comes back here for high-percentage Jeff Bonde, who drop this son of Bertrando into a maiden claimer for the first time.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Lexington Pearl, 2. Teddy’s Promise, 3. Iotapa. LONG SHOT: Heir Kitty.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. This Means War, 2. Unusual Hottie, 3. Journey On. LONG SHOT: Kathleen Rose.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Girl On the Lam, 2. Tickle Again, 3. Tribal Torch. LONG SHOT: Heavens Stairway.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Norastone, 2. Sprague River, 3. Sprouts. LONG SHOT: Anniversary Kitty.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Big Macher, 2. Cyclometer, 3. Mobilized. LONG SHOT: Coach Bob.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Jules Journey, 2. China Prince, 3. Summer Hit. LONG SHOT: Maybe Tuesday.

==

10th RACE: 1. Atearoa (best bet), 2. Tamarando, 3. California Chrome. LONG SHOT: Awesome Return.

This 3-year-old gelding ATEAROA was very impressive at Del Mar last summer breaking his maiden at first asking. He has earned $138,000 in six starts while facing some toughies in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and the Grade III Generous. Throw out his last race after a poor start and jockey Gary Stevens jumps aboard. There’s no doubt Tamarando will be tough to beat, but it might be worth it.

Hollywood Park opinions for Thursday, Dec. 5

Race 6: #11 California Jade

This 2-year-old gelding drops into a maiden claimer for the first time and trainer Bob Hess Jr. is 30% (3-for-10) with that move. Corey Nakatani takes over to ride and should show speed from the gate.

==

Race 8: #9 Rambling House

This looks like a tough $30,000 maiden claimer for 2-year-olds and we’ll try to get a price with this first-timer by Bertrando. Trainer Dean Pederson has won 27% of his first starts and 40% with debuting maiden claimers. He has teamed up with jockey Martin Pedroza before and Pedroza likes to send them from the gate.
