The week that was at Santa Anita

The more things change, the things stay the same.

Rafael Bejarano, the leading jockey at Arcadia’s Santa Anita Park, was the top rider last week with five wins from 22 mounts.

Apprentice Drayden Van Dyke is the one to watch. Like I surmised recently when Irving Orozco lost his bug, Van Dyke is getting more mounts and the kid can ride. He seems to do very well down Santa Anita’s turf course, which isn’t easy for the best journeyman.

Victor Espinoza and Corey Nakatani both won three races each last week to stay in the top five of the season’s overall count.

On the training side, it was pretty well spread out.

Jerry Hollendorfer led the way with three wins in seven tries.

Leading trainer Bob Baffert, John Sadler, Tom Proctor, Ron Ellis and Marty Jones all had two wins on the week.

Conversely, Doug O’Neill (1-for-14) and Peter Miller (0-for-5) might be barns to ignore until they show signs of heating up again. And they will. They have so many horses that they will turn it around, just watch for the signs.

Something to watch for early in the week, jockey Gary Stevens, who was 0-for-7 last week, is riding twice for Sadler. Now considering, Stevens and Sadler have teammed up just four times over the last two years, I’d say it’s an interesting development. It might be worth a couple of betting dollars.

Santa Anita picks for Monday, Jan. 20 (updated)

FIRST RACE: 1. Sister Glady Oh La, 2. Gittel, 3. Holiday N Newport. LONG SHOT: Fiesta Express.

SISTER GLADY OH LA gave an even effort sprinting in her return to the races last month and now she gets to do what she wants: route. She has won three times at this distance, granted it was in Northern California, but she has a nose for the finish line.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Indianapolis, 2. Beach Hut, 3. Papa Turf. LONG SHOT: Elmonte Cristo (SCRATCHED). New long shot: Rockin Home.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Chief Lion, 2. San Onofre, 3. Brokered. LONG SHOT: Got Even.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Bury Pacer, 2. Closet E, 3. Big Medicine Man. LONG SHOT: Cowtownmary.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Senator Bob, 2. Dunmore East, 3. Zuboff. LONG SHOT: Half Dome Dude.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Dixieland Blues, 2. Koast (SCRATCHED), 3. Relentless Heat. LONG SHOT: Insideondoutside. Mew order: 1. Dixieland Blues, 2. Relentless Heat, 3. Macias. LONG SHOT: Insideondoutside.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Cause Ur My Babe, 2. Capers N Wine, 3. Magic Spot. LONG SHOT: Sixy Eddie.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Pulpit’s Express, 2. Major Truth, 3. Pulla Train. LONG SHOT: Wings of Mojave.

==

NINTH RACE: 1. Singleinthelast (best bet), 2. Katy’s Plum, 3. Grammy Times Six. LONG SHOT: Mean Emma Jean.

Trainer Eric Kruljac drops SINGLEINTHELAST into a maiden claimer for the first time and he’s 30% with that move. On top of that he puts apprentice Drayden Vandyke aboard so look for a send job from the outside post and she should have enough speed to clear.
