Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, Nov. 26 (Opening day)

Preview: The start of a new meet at Tampa Bay Downs and there is one big change to watch: three-time leading jockey Antonio Gallardo is riding in New York this winter so there will be a new top dog. Veterans Daniel Centeno (not riding today), Ronnie Allen Jr., Dean Butler and Fernando De La Criz bare watching. Newcomers to watch are Angel Cruz plus Edwin Gonzalez and Albin Jimenez. The latter two have agent Mike Moran, who was Gallardo’s agent so he has the connections. Also keep track of where the winning horses last ran because horses come from all over for this meet.

Race 4: #7 Supermans Cape (8-1): This colt has been away for more than a year and if there is any trainer can get them ready off such a layoff it’s Larry Rivelli, who is 27% with horses off a 90-plus day layoff. A son of Cape Blanco, he should enjoy the turf.

Race 6: #3 Huntstown (8-1): This gelding had a second over this turf course earlier this year and fits nicely with this group. Ran mainly against Indiana-breds this summer, but no worries about that. He has the best late pace rating from Brisnet.

Race 7: #2 Bluegrass Kid (6-1): This gelding has won over the track before and loves the 6-furlong distance with four wins. Has the top early pace rating and trainer Benny Feliciano is 29% with shippers. On top of that comes out of a key race which has produced two next out winners.

Race 11: #2 Nightbar (4-1): We’ve already extolled the virtues of trainer Larry Rivelli off a long layoff. Now add in a horse that won his first two races over this track plus the fact that the gelding comes out of a race in March that produced three next out winners.

Good luck

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, April 16

Race 5: #6 Commissionette (6-1) (turf only): Trainer Ben Colebrook has been trying to get this filly on the grass in her last two races, but the rain gods have interfered. They might again today, but if they don’t Colebrook is 21% going from dirt to turf.

Race 5 – Tam: #3 Starship Bellagio (30-1)

One gets the feeling trainer Dennis Ward is hoping this one comes off the grass. Ward is 22% with horses moving up two or more classes. This filly doesn’t have a win on the turf but she does have a win on an off track. Hmmm.

Race 10 – Tam

#3 Chilham Court (6-1): We’ve espoused what a good meet Kathleen O’Connell has had this year and here she teams up with jockey Ronnie Allen Jr. and they are a 24% combination.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions on Wednesday, April 6

Preview: There is no rain the forecast until Thursday so the grass should be good dot go on the card, which is starting to notice a lack of entries with three races with just 7 entries and one race with 6. Leading jockey Antonio Gallardo might be breaking out of a slump with a few wins over the weekend.

Race 3 – Tam

#7 Saturday Storms (5-1): This mare comes out of key race where three horses have come back to win plus jockey Scott Spieth and Aldana Gonzalez continue to be a good combo. Gonzalez has been 25% when dropping a horse in class in the past here.

Race 6 – Tam

#2 Spider John (6-1): This colt is owned and trained by Tom Proctor and there is a key jockey change here as he gets Ronnie Allen Jr. to ride. They are a 31% combo at the meet and there is a good work showing.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Sunday, April 3

Preview: There was plenty of rain on Saturday so the chances of there being an turf racing is likely to be slim at best..

Race 3 – Tam

#2 Supreme Stature (9-2): This gelding broke his maiden over an off track at this distance so he could be tough here. The 3-year-old has the top Brisnet Class Rating and best speed at the distance. Jockey Ronnie Allen Jr. is 22% with trainer Ian Wilkes.

Race 4 – Tam

#5 Desert Summer (4-1): Leading jockey Antonio Gallardo usually rides for trainer Jamie Ness but eschews his entry here to ride this mare for trainer Saul Matos, who is 27% first off the claim.

Race 8 – Tam

#2 Refer (6-1): This will be the seventh different track this colt has run over in attempt to break his maiden. He seems to like this track with three good works coming into this. Trainer John Terranova is 23% with shippers.

Race 9 – Tam

#7 Spark Kit (6-1) (turf only): We’re hoping the turf course dries out in time for this race. Trainer Gerald Aschinger is 20% on the turf.

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Friday, April 1

Preview: Rain took the races off the turf on Wednesday. Tough to say what will happen Friday and there is a 80% chance of rain on Saturday. Jockey Fernando De la Cruz won three races on Wednesday as leading jockey Antonio Gallardo continues to slump.

Race 5 – Tam

#8 Don’tpassjudgement (4-1): This filly takes a drop in class for trainer Joseph Arboitanza, who is a master at turning horses back in distance. This filly has never run this short and should be plenty fit at 6 ½ furlongs.

Race 6 – Tam

#5 Prospect Drive (9-2): This filly ran second on the dirt after it was taken off the grass. She returns to the green and should be ready to go for jockey Samy Camacho and trainer Horacio Barbaran.

Race 10 – Tam

#1 Extrovert (20-1): Jockey Samy Camacho has been the king of the long shots at the meet with at least two $100 winners and hit a $30 with trainer Hernan Parra and it’s the same combination here. This gelding ships up from Gulfstream Park so this is a drop in class. He comes out of a key race that has produced three winners from eight starters so far.
