Santa Anita opinions for Saturday, May 27

Race 1 – SA
#3 One I-m Running To (7-2) ****
This gelding is coming off a long layoff, but trainer Steve Miyadi is 26% with horses off a layoff of 180 days or more. The 3-year-old broke his maiden for $50,000, which is a lot higher than others in this event. New York-based jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., in two to ride later, gets the mount.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 4 – SA
#1 Union Rebel (12-1) ***
Tough maiden event featuring Sonneteer, who finished second in the Rebel and ran in the Kentucky Derby. Going with this 3-year-old from the Richard Baltas barn. Hoping there is a lot of speed and he comes running in the lane at a price.
Jeff’s Playbook: 3 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 6 – SA
#1 Giant Influence (5-1) ****
Has been working well for his return for Peter Eurton, who is 20% going from route to sprint. Could be ready to go.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 9 – SA
#4 Awesome Heights (12-1) TURF ONLY ****
Got in some trouble last time and now good turf rider Flavien Prat jumps on for Neil Drysdale, who is 28% with Prat at Santa Anita.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Good luck.

Santa Anita opinions for Friday, May 26

Race 3 – SA
#8 Conquest Sabre Cat (4-1) TURF ONLY ****

The rails will be at 30 feet on the turf course which usually means speed will be tough and closer will have a hard time in the stretch. This gelding has speed and Flavien Prat takes over in the saddle.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 5 – SA
#4 True Valor (3-1) ****

This colt makes his debut in SoCal after facing tougher last year at Saratoga, Churchill Downs and Keeneland. Is not up for sale today coming off the layoff but should fit at the level. Trainer Keith Desormeaux puts blinkers on, maybe to keep his mind on business.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 8 – SA
#9 Rafter One (5-1) TURF ONLY ****

This colt drops into a maiden claimer for the first time and trainer Mike Pender is 27% with that move. Jockey Rafael Bejarano jumps which is a big upgrade in my mind on the grass.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Good luck.

Santa Anita opinions for Thursday, May 25

Race 2 – SA
#7 Acharnement (3-1) ****
Interesting race as Doug O’Neill sends out two youngsters, including one that cost $360K, but this filly by Into Mischief has been working well and jockey Flavien Prat and trainer Eddie Truman are 20% together.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 5 – SA
#7 Angel Tears (8-1) ****
Trainer Vann Belvoir and apprentice Roman are 5-for-5 when paired together. There is a good work showing so it maybe go time.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 8 – SA
#9 Papa Royale (9-2) ****
Prat rode this gelding for O’Neill last time to a fifth-place finish. He wouldn’t ride back unless he thought the 4-year-old had a real shot. Starting from the outside, Prat will get over to the rail and try to come up the fence. O’Neill is 19% second off the layoff
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Good luck.

Santa Anita opinions for Sunday, May 21

Preview: I hope some of you hit Ransom he Moon at $9.80 or Wood Machine $21.80 on Saturday. In the Preakness, I had the right idea of a long shot in this crop but the wrong horse (I won’t talk about the ride).

Race 3 – SA
#5 Utana (8-5) ****

Might be a single in the Pick 5. The daughter of Curlin goes two turns for the first time and she is bred for it. Trainer John Shirreffs is 23% with first time routers.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 4 – SA
#6 Go for Bear (6-1) ****

Been away for 2 months. Drops to lowest level ever. Big jock switch to Rafael Bejarano. Worth it at the price..
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EX 1-2-4-5 with 6.

Race 7 – SA
#3 Moon Kitty (7-2) ****
Has shown speed against MSW types and drops into the maiden claimer for the first time. Comes out of key race with two next out winners and trainer Peter Miller is on fire.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 8 – SA
#4 Stringent (8-1) ****

Trainer David Hofmans goes back to the dirt with this gelding and he has won twice over the surface. A couple of big works showing.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EX 3-5-6 with 4.

Good luck.

Race 2 – SA
#6 King Eddie (3-1) ****

Owner Paul Reddam likes to have his Square Eddies come out swinging (17% first time starters) and this 2-year-old is the oldest of the bunch of 2-year-olds having been born in January. Good works showing. Barn rider in Mario Gutierrez and trainer Doug O’Neill are a 14% combo.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EX 1-3-7 with 6.

Race 4 – SA
#1 Dahlia Azul (5-1) ****

This filly has been training well and had a bit of trouble last time out. Trainer Vann Belvoir is a perfect 4-for-4 with apprentice Roman. Look for speed from the gate.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EX 3-4-8 with 1.

Race 5 – SA
#1 Sweet Connie (8-1) TURF ONLY ***

Like we’ve said before jockey Gary Stevens doesn’t have to ride every race so when he irdes, take noitce. This filly had some trouble last time but Stevens rides back for Paddy Gallagher and they are 25% together.
Jeff’s Playbook: 3 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EX 3-4-5-6 with 1.

Race 9 – SA
#6 Ransom the Moon (4-1) ****

There is a ton of speed in this Grade II race and we’re hoping jockey Flavien Prat brings this 5-year-old from off the pace to nail them in the stretch.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EX 2-3-4-7 with 6.

Race 10 – SA
#2 For the Hustle (6-1) ***

Jeff’s Playbook: 3 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 11 – SA
#9 Wood Machine (8-1) TURF ONLY ***

We’re back to that Gary Stevens things again. He rides this Arizona invader for old friend Mike Chambers, who is 35% first time with a horse and 30% with shippers.

Race 3 – SA
#5 Calvert Street (4-1) TURF ONLY ****
Our Eyes: Comes over from Turf Paradise and has speed. Trainer Eric Eric Kruljac is 36% with horses second time on turf.

Jeff’s Playbook: 3 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 6 – SA
#1 Psychedelicat (6-1) ****
Our Eyes: Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer drops this colt into a miaden claimer for the first time and he’s 26% with that move. This 3-year-old did way better sprinting in his first two career races so look for an improvement.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Good luck.

Santa Anita opinions for Thursday, May 18

Preview: Didn’t have a good week last week mainly because didn’t follow my own advice of sticking with Peter Miller. The question now is whether Miller will cool off or stay hot? I do know with Del Mar two months away he will be ready for that meet.

Race 1 – SA
#6 Kennedie Sky (4-1) TURF ONLY ****
Our Eyes: I guess we’re going to test the Miller question right off the bat. This mare has a good Brisnet Late Pace Rating and Miller is 19% third off the layoff. Good turf rider Brice Blanc is aboard.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EXBX 1-6.

Good luck.
