Horse racing, Santa Anita

Santa Anita opinions for Monday, Oct. 8

Preview: Let me say the two stakes today on the grass for 2-year-olds are tough. I wouldn’t talk anyone off almost any horse in either race. With all the Euro imports, I think you are going to have to go deep in your exotics.

FOURTH RACE: #2 New Karma (6-1)
Jockey Drayden Van Dyke is one of the top turf riders on the West Coast. He could have ridden two other horses in this down the hill race, but opts for this gelding, who is making his turf debut in his 29th career race. What does Van Dyke know? The sire Decarchy is 10% with first time turfers and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is 24% with horses that won their last race.

FIFTH RACE: #10 Point Guard (10-1)
There are a lot of first-timers in this race so anything can happen (of those I would look at Baffert’s Talent Scout). But of those that have run I like this colt. He is coming out of a key Del Mar race and apprentice Evin Roman stays aboard for trainer Richard Baltas.

SEVENTH RACE: #7 Goncharova (6-1)
Drops into a maiden claimer for the first time for trainer Simon Callaghan, who is 31% with the move. Showed high speed last against MSW-types and apprentice Evin Roman stays aboard.

Good luck.
