Horse racing, Santa Anita

Santa Anita opinions for Saturday, May 20

Race 2 – SA
#6 King Eddie (3-1) ****

Owner Paul Reddam likes to have his Square Eddies come out swinging (17% first time starters) and this 2-year-old is the oldest of the bunch of 2-year-olds having been born in January. Good works showing. Barn rider in Mario Gutierrez and trainer Doug O’Neill are a 14% combo.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EX 1-3-7 with 6.

Race 4 – SA
#1 Dahlia Azul (5-1) ****

This filly has been training well and had a bit of trouble last time out. Trainer Vann Belvoir is a perfect 4-for-4 with apprentice Roman. Look for speed from the gate.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EX 3-4-8 with 1.

Race 5 – SA
#1 Sweet Connie (8-1) TURF ONLY ***

Like we’ve said before jockey Gary Stevens doesn’t have to ride every race so when he irdes, take noitce. This filly had some trouble last time but Stevens rides back for Paddy Gallagher and they are 25% together.
Jeff’s Playbook: 3 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EX 3-4-5-6 with 1.

Race 9 – SA
#6 Ransom the Moon (4-1) ****

There is a ton of speed in this Grade II race and we’re hoping jockey Flavien Prat brings this 5-year-old from off the pace to nail them in the stretch.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EX 2-3-4-7 with 6.

Race 10 – SA
#2 For the Hustle (6-1) ***

Trainer Bruce Headley wins 24% first time out and the sire Cyclotron wins at 15%. Headley knows how to get them ready plus he’s a co-breeder and co-owner of this gelding.
Jeff’s Playbook: 3 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 11 – SA
#9 Wood Machine (8-1) TURF ONLY ***

We’re back to that Gary Stevens things again. He rides this Arizona invader for old friend Mike Chambers, who is 35% first time with a horse and 30% with shippers.
Jeff’s Playbook: 3 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EX 6-7-8-11 with 9.

Good luck.
