Horse racing, Santa Anita

Santa Anita opinions for Sunday, April 23

Race 2 – SA
#2 Monterey Shale (8-5) *****
Our Eyes: This looks like a single to me in the Pick 5. This gelding is at his lowest level ever, comes out of a key race and jockey Rafael Bejarano jumps back on..
Jeff’s Playbook: 5 units to win and 10 units to place.

Race 4 – SA
#1 Desert General (6-1) ****
Our Eyes: This gelding broke his maiden last time out and has had a good work since so I look for a good effort.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 7 – SA
#5 Sir Studleigh (7-2) ****
Our Eyes: This is an interesting race. Bruce Headley could have a couple of first-time runners, but I like this 5-year-old maiden making his third start off the layoff and the key for me is that he finished fourth last time against open competition and now drops into the Cal-bred ranks. That race has also produced two next out runners.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 9 – SA
#7 Tiz My Love (8-1) ***
Our Eyes: A maiden filly race all the usual suspects like three for Bob Baffert, two for Jerry Hollendorfer and one for Peter Miller. I’m going to with a first-timer from the Hollendorfer barn. This daughter of Tiz Wonderful has been working steadily and The Dorf puts the apprentice Roman on, which means to me they will try to steal it. The price is right.
Jeff’s Playbook: 3 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Good luck.
