Horse racing, Santa Anita

Santa Anita opinions for Thursday, March 2

Preview: Back to racing and hopefully staying on the grass for a full week. The weather looks it might cooperate. Today’s card isn’t the best and late Pick 4 might be best sequence.

Race 4 – SA
#7 El Tovar (4-1) ****
Our Eyes: Big barn switch from Nicholas Acuna to Richard Baltas, who is 22% with a new horse in the barn and 22% off this type of layoff. Baltas drops this 8-year-old in class and puts journeyman Israel Ocampo aboard.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 5 – SA
#6 City Storm (6-1) TURF ONLY ****
Our Eyes: Trainer Phil D’Amato has two in here, including a first-timer named Kopitar. I’m going with this experienced D’Amato entry as he comes out of the American Anthem maiden race at Del Mar which has produced three winners. On top of that, I love City Zips on the grass as they get 13% first time turf.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EXBX 6-1-5.

Race 6 – SA
#7 Wild Lando (4-1) ****
Our Eyes: This could be a big day for D’Amato as this first-time starter makes his debut. This homebred is by Empire Way, which gets 15% winners first time out. On top of that, D’Amato is 23% with maiden claimers and 23% with debut maiden claimers.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 7 – SA
#6 Serbian Syclone (10-1) TURF ONLY ****
Our Eyes: Trainer Mark Glatt claimed this 5-year-old off Peter Miller at Del Mar. Glatt is 27% first off the claim. What we con’t know is whether Glatt had to deal with a health issue or if the wet weather got in the way for this gelding. At this morning line, I’m willing to find out.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show. EXBX 6-7.

Good luck.
